i think there's 2 different techniques for mimicking staff spinning with poi:
~ Use the centre point of your poi as the centre of the staff
~ Use the head of the poi as the centre of the staff
For ease, let's name these er... centre-point and head-point : cp & hp (actually, those are crap names, but will do for now).
For example propellors are centre-point moves
From my feeble dibblings in contact staff and poi, I've so far managed the following staff moves, based on Meg's lessons, as good a reference as any for contact staff moves. I might not have done them very well, but they are do-able.
Halo : cp
Backside entry half-steve: cp (Sorry, got to love that name... aka "neck wrap to arm contact roll")
Elbow-only conveyor belt: cp
Matrix (ish): hp
Fishtails: cp
Belly/back wrap - same hand catches - hp
Neck wrap to halo - cp
The "trouble" I find is that I can only do most of these with one poi (probably as they're single staff moves...).
Although this could raise the awesome possiblity of throwing one poi, contacting the other then catching into something sexy...

Re: Staff moves that work with poi
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 4:44 AMyeah nice one durbs! :)
I haven't played with the hp stuff yet, but for the cp moves I know some that can be combined nicely withthe second poi still in the hand,
the Halo roll, if you enter it from BHB under the opposite arm (ie. Rhand swings poi under Larm), you can start it from a rev Bfy and as you swing the poi into the Halo roll, you can use the other arm to lift it a bit and give more momentum.
half steve - I think I do this the other way round to you, but you can have both poi swinging same dir horizontally, swing one around the wrist of the other hand and steve it down around your neck.
that's all I got for now I think, but the throwing and contacting sounds like a good idea!!
....must give those hp moves a go!!

Re: Staff moves that work with poi
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 9:41 AMi posted this a while back on fire videoz
danzfunk.com/fire/CrappyFishtailDemo.avi
the filename says it all. it sho is crappy! unfortunately i have not been spinning much and have not been making many videos since so i have nothing improved to show here but at least it makes more sense than the words.
oh, and in the process i found that the thread this video came from is still quite opinionatedly hilarious after all these years.
PS yes i am aware it's not really a fishtail...there's an extra spin in there. but i didn't know what else to call it... -

Re: Staff moves that work with poi
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 5:52 AMHow are those poi weighted? They look like they move like an even 50-50 but I'm curious. -

Re: Staff moves that work with poi
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 9:28 AMthe handles are triangles made of steel. i will try to mount some lights on them for subsequent videos so that you can see the handle flippage...they don't weigh as much as the wicks but they are substantial enough to create a "meteor" effect.
