Films like medicine...

I just remembered a film I saw a while back called "Born Into Brothels"... Powerful film...
See it if you can...

Winner of the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary Film, BORN INTO BROTHELS, was produced and directed by New York based filmmakers Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski. Zana Briski, a New York based photographer, gives each of these youngsters a camera and teaches them how to take pictures, simultaneously causing them to look at their world with new eyes. Their photographs are prisms into their souls, rather than anthropological curiosities, and a true testimony to the power of the indelible creative spirit.

Yes! I saw this a good while back - not sure when exactly. It's a wonderful film, and I think it's out on video now.

I haven't seen 'Born into Brothels', always contemplated it on the video shelf but never picked it up. A movie in a similar vain (vein?) is 'City of God' -- a harsh film that chronicles the rise of youth gangs in the slums of Rio, and how one boy's gift of photography allows him to catalogue this world from the inside and then expose it to the world. It is a powerful, brutal movie, kind of like a Latin 'Goodfellas' with young people. I recommend it.

I've seen both of those and I recommend them too. Great films.

2 that really struck a powerful chord with me are Waking Life and Before Sunrise. They both deal with discussions on the meaning of life and existance...and the magic, beauty and power of being in the Now.

NORTH FORK...i wandered into this accidentally and WOW. it is not well known, but VERY worth the search...simple, but not easy.

THREE SEASONS...another "accidental" find, on my birthday. humbling, amazing, life is *phenomenal*.

City of God, yes, i wish i could have made it through...couldn't watch through violence.

FLAVELA RISING was easier for me...along similar lines (?)

I rented Three Seasons from the local library on a whim one day and it was breathtaking! Totally made me weep. So vivid.

One of my favs is Dead Man, a Jim Jarmusch film starring Johnny Depp. Best viewed when you are slightly altered. It still blows my mind after several watchings.
