Another muted trade unionist in Colombia

With the murder of Jesus Caballero, teaching the Seine, 23 are victims of unionism so far in 2008. In most cases, have been killed by knives and, most without prior threats.
Date: 04/23/2008 --

As surprising is the increase in deaths of trade unionists in the first four months of 2008 in connection with last year-especially when they came dropping in previous years - such as how they died.

The last case of which it is reported is that of Jesus Caballero Ariza, teaching the Seine in Sabanalarga (Atlanta), which was part of the union of the institution. Caballero had disappeared on April 16 and two days later, his relatives found his body as NN in a mass grave. He had signs of torture, with traces of machete wounds and a shot in the head.

According to Carlos Rodriguez, president of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), there is concern about how lately have been killed unionists. 'They have been attacked with a knife, showed signs of torture and evidence that you are looking for a new modality also generate terror because when other people see that there were fears torture generates' he says.

The corpses of recent trade unionists killed so far in 2008 realize they have been killed in a similar fashion. The victimizers are using knives, and many had not received threats before he died.

But Caballero did have announced his death. He, as an instructor of human rights in his union, had participated in organizing the march of March 6, the same as some had publicly branded having been promoted by the FARC. That ended to put Knight in the sights of their executioners.

With his death, as are the 23 killed in just four months to go this year, a figure that exceeds by 77 percent to 10 murders of trade unionists occurred in 2007.

The balance sheet shows a dark picture for teachers. Of the total number of unionists killed so far, half have been teachers union, as Caballero.

Until last year, the decline in deaths of trade unionists and it was clear both celebrated the same as the government workers' unions. The blogger Alejandro Gaviria even review in place an academic study that talks about a reduction of murders of trade unionists in relation to other vulnerable population to violence as journalists and politicians.

That undeniable achievement for the world association is lost this year, according to coincide union leaders and as announced recently in Semana.com article 'Profession danger'. Rodriguez, the president CUT, with fears that the rearmament of the paramilitaries in the 'Black eagles' re a threat to unionists similar to that meant the AUC just a few years ago.
