So Hello!

My album of prior works is here: s113.photobucket.com/albums/...cyCakes/ - thought I'd share. I'll put up new ones if and when I make them.

Also, I saw a few people mention "customers." I'm trying to do this a little on the side to bring in extra cash while my husband is in school. How did you build a customer base?

Welcome! We're pretty quiet around here, but we are here. haha. I haven't gone through all ur pics yet, as I'm supposed to be working. haha. But the ones I saw I like! Especially those bellydancers ;)
Can't help with the customer base issue as I am limited to friends and family, but word of mouth is the best and cheapest!

What did you think of the zils? That was a new technique for me- to get the shiney. Expensive, though. I went through about 4 canisters of material to do it. It's like this powdery shiney stuff. If you mix it with vodka, it becomes paintable. Then you paint it on one little stroke at a time.

      Cool technique, if time consuming.

I was going to ask about that stuff. I had heard of such a thing but never seen it. I thought they looked great. But wow that does sound time consuming.
I wanna see the naughty ones. I will PM you me email addy.

You think this Tribe is quiet? I started a Candymaking Enthusiasts Tribe, and it is as silent as the grave, with a whopping 4 members.

I guess Candymaking is becoming a lost art.

    Hi Moon!

I like your bellydancers too. What kind of frosting were you painting on for the zils? I've painted on fondant but that's it. I hope to expand into airbrushing soon.

I make cakes on the side too. I've built up my customer base over time through word of mouth. Doesn't hurt either that I used to work in a bakery, now work in a trendy restaurant, and know a lot of caterers and wedding coordinators. You've got a good start by putting your pics up where they're easy to see. Start networking in your area and never pass up a chance to expand your knowledge and skills.

It was a buttercream frosting. That's pretty much the only thing I know- I mean, I can modify it to be vegan or flavored or whatever, but that's the medium I'm most comfortable with. I let it sit overnight and when it hardened a little, it was paintable. I haven't taken classes since the first ones- in highschool.

I made an awesome mocha frosting for the violin. It was basic buttercream, with all the flavoring left out and using 1/3 cocoa powder to 2/3 powdered sugar and 2-3 T (?) instant coffee crystals per pound of butter. Very tasty.

I'd like to learn how to work with fondant, and how to make little figures. Mostly, it's been trial and error on my part, seeing what works and what doesn't.

I just graduated from my doctoral work- and being a doctoral student doesn't leave much time OR money for classes. So now it's a whole new world. :)
