I don't want to buy a whole pack if they don't work well.
thanks

My friend moved to NY and left behind one of those little toaster ovens that most people use for toasting bagels etc., except that she only used it for baking polymer clay. If there is any crafty vixen out there who could use this oven for the same purpose, please reply here, and I'll mail you the exact address (I'm in South Berkeley, near Berkeley Bowl) where you can pick it up.

Hi Vixens,

I'm in a small apartment now, not batiking much these days, and I've decided to let all my batik supplies go to some new happy crafter who will put them to good use. I've got a bunch of stuff (electric fry pan, wax, dyes, brushes, frame, soda ash, etc) and will let it go for a very reasonable donation :-). Send my a private message if you're interested. I'm in San Francisco. Thanks!

Golden Gate Renaissance Faire - Hope to see you there...

The ultimate Renaissance bash, with a Feast of Fools, Knights on Horseback, Magicians, Jugglers, Music And an Amazing Shopping Experience - www.ggfaire.com

San Francisco, CA – Brave knights clad in shining armor thunder down the list on their spectacular horses at ferocious speeds while trying to knock one another off their steeds. Stilt walkers, jugglers, fire- eaters and jesters perform over-the-top stunts. Swordsmen expertly wield their weapons in the daily sword tournaments. A court of justice dispenses punishment to children who did not mind their parents and husbands or wives who did not express their love enough times. Mud diving peasants kiss the feet of passing by patrons who happen to take the moment to peruse the scene. In sharp contrast, the Queen’s court makes a regal entrance dressed in incredible, colorful garments of gold, silks, and velvet. Voices and music announce the arrival and passage of her Majesty, and her nobles and ambassadors.

The fourth annual Golden Gate Renaissance Faire, in San Francisco, CA., held August 25-26th is the ultimate Renaissance bash, a lively Dionysian party, where the guests enjoy turkey legs, exotic food, and drink as they banter with the myriad performers filling the streets.

The event sports one-of-a-kind shows, music, and comedy. Just a sampling of the talent includes:

* Myth and Magic, a two men comedy and magic show
* Fowl Tales, a one man, three parrot and one dog extravaganza performance that charms and entertains the whole family.
* Trey Cromwell, Professional Showoff, a one man danger show that combines combining variety arts like juggling, contortion and escape artistry into a seamless whole.
* The Merry Praynksters, a country dancing group, will whirl and wind among the patrons with their period dancing while Danse Macabre will progress through the streets enthralled in their dance with death their hunting music and attire leaving patrons in awe.

One of the Weekend’s highlights will be the Knights of Mayhem, a professional jousting troupe made up of actual jousting champions who will compete in duels on horseback twice daily showcasing their stunning horsemanship and skillful spectacles in Pas De Arms contests. The Knights of Mayhem boast the very best in jousting, showmanship, horsemanship and Medieval entertainment. The Knights come from as far as Utah and Michigan to perform their unique show and are not an experience to be missed. The two lead Knights - Charlie Andrews and Shane Adams both hold International Jousting Titles and are considered some of the hardest hitting Knights of the International Jousting Circuit. Their jousts are never scripted, but simply a way for them to keep fit for the time they face themselves again not as compatriots but as competitors. And as they never pull punches, an unhorsing is ever an imminent possibility. Contests will include spear throwing, ring spearing and cabbage cutting. And then, onlookers will be astounded by the action of the hard-hitting lance-splitting jousting. Hundreds of pounds of man, horse and metal collide and do battle right before your eyes.

The cast of over a 1000 actors and groups come together from the four corners of the country and will be led by three talented and seasoned actresses performing roles of Queens Jane Gray and Mary Tudor and the young Princess Elizabeth. Queen Jane will be played by 18 year old Megan Fisher, resident of San Diego. Megan has been performing at Renaissance events for over three years as a member of St. Augustine’s Guild. Her supporting cast will be led by the Saint Marie, a renowned improv group from the Los Angeles area. Liz Martin will play the role of Queen Mary Tudor. Liz’ involvement in acting and Renaissance Faires spans more than a decade. Her supporting courtiers includes members of the renowned English court guilds: St. Stephens and St. George.

"It happens live, right before your eyes and all around," says Bill Watters, organizer of the event. "The immersive experience of a faire is the one thing that everyone will remember. Many people may have seen jousting in the movies or on TV, but here you are in the midst of the action and spectacle."

100s of merchants will display various wares and one of the kind items and crafts for sale. They include clothing, jewelry, leatherworks and swords. There will also be food vendors selling everything from Turkey legs to crepes to Oriental food to scones, popcorn and other treats for every preference.

A portion of festival profits will be donated to a local San Francisco high school. “We hope to continue to direct attention towards preserving arts programs as a part of the educational curriculum,” said Marti Miernik, performance director of the Golden Gate and Renaissance Productions. ”Studies have long shown the positive impact the arts have on children. And in that vein, we hope to help preserve and support after hours programs and the performing arts.”

About 10,000 patrons are expected to attend over the two days of this year's Golden Gate Renaissance Faire. The faire will run August 25th and 26th. Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The cost of admission is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors, military, and ages 13-17, $5.00 for children 6-12. Children under six are free. For more information, and directions to the grounds, visit www.ggfaire.com or call 415 354 1773.

RE-FASHION Costume Change and Exchange Recycling Event

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2007
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Humanist Hall, Oakland
390 27th St, between Telegraph and Broadway

Does your alter ego need a makeover? Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven’t been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

If you’d like to:
volunteer for the event
bring your sewing machine to the event for others to use
help run a transformation station
lead a workshop on modifying clothing
or provide an activity for children

or if you just need more information…

please email refashion2007@gmail.com

Prepare for the Playa EVENTS-- BUY LOCAL... BUY BURNER!

Calling all Crafty Vixens!!
I've put together a series of events in the city over the summer that not only will be fun but a great outlet to sell your crafts or services!!
BUY LOCAL... BUY BURNER!
If you, or someone you know would like to perform or sell something let me know. It's going to be lots of fun and a great way to support the burner community!!

Here are the details:

We are putting together a series of events connecting Burners with Burner Business products and services to get you ready for the Burn! This is a unique series of events because all vendors are Burners! It will have performing artists, a Burning Man 2007 ticket raffle, demonstrations and much more!

We are looking for an eclectic bunch of burner owned/made products to make this event a total
Prepare for the Playa event. We already have interest from El wire/light toys, personal dome structures, Faux fur coats and accessories, tattoo artists, a hair scupltress, but we know there are many other unique, quirky and just cool Burner made items out there that are screaming for an audience!

We will bring the audience to you!
Sundays 12-7pm
June 10th,
July 22nd, &
August 12th

The events will be held at Mighty 119 Utah. Tons of free parking and the bar will be open with Sunday afternoon Bloody Marys and other drink specials to get our clientele in the mood!

Our website has all the information you need including an application to join us!!
www.preparefortheplaya.com

Don't wait- vendor categories are limited to allow the best mix of products and services and ARE FILLING UP!

See you all in June!

Juniper Tree is no longer the only place to buy soapmaking supplies in the bay area.
Hydra, located at 1716 4th St in Berkeley (in that upscale shopping district at 4th and University) is now selling soap bases, dried herbs, and all kinds of oils and fragrances. Hydra has a better selection of soap bases for melt & pour. Check it out.

Looking for sewing or crafting buddies in East Bay

I now sew in solitude and would like to change that. I would like to join or start a crafting circle.

Whether we meet regularly or intermittently doesn't matter to me. I just quit my job and have a schoolage child, so during "school time" works best for me. Second in line are weekend meetings but I realize that most people would probably like to meet weekday nights and I can do that as well.

I am an advanced beginner or sloppy intermediate sewer. I enjoy cutting up my clothing and changing it. I have also made sweaters, pants and skirts from a pattern. It doesn't really matter though what level other crafters are because I just think it would be so much more fun to have a social evening where we also do something rather than just sit around and talk.

I can host in SF until June or in East Bay after that. I am willing to drive to the east bay for crafts night with my sewing machine and/or serger.

Best Thrift Stores in the Bay Area?

I live on the Peninsula so I frequent the Belmont Salvation Army on El Camino, The Goodwill store on 25th in San Mateo, Savers in Downtown Redwood City, but my FAVORITE thrift store is also the closest to me. It's the Thrift Center in San Carlos on El Camino because of the sales (I even put a picture in the tribe photo album!)

What's your fave local thrift store?

I set the dried ink with an iron... and when I washed the fabric... the image washed out in some places and ran in the others. I've been using Versatex fabric ink. Does anyone have any experience with screen printing on fabric... what type of ink did you use... how did you set it? Thanks.

I am a bit crafty but this is a little out of my league. I bought a blazer for job interviews that fits well in the the shoulders, my big-a## b00bs and is a good length but needs the sleeves shortened and the waist brought in. I'm on a bit of a budget so I'm looking at my options... How much do you think this'll cost me at a tailor? Does anyone do tailoring for barter or for cash? I'm in San Lorenzo. Will travel.

Lemme know.

Here's a piccie of said blazer.

Hello ladies. New member here. Need some advice. I am working on some wedding programs which are a linen paper mounted on a stock paper backing. I want to glue the two pieces together, and don't know if a glue stick is a good option, or if I should try to use spray glue. Time is quickly becoming of the essence, as the wedding is next weekend! (Three cheers for the bride and groom!)

If spray glue - I have never used it before and am a bit worried about the mess and screwing it up. Any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch!!

Magnetic Frog Clips Idea

So I have this awesome silk shirt that was made in Nepal that uses frog clasps. The clasps are useless and come apart when you look at the them the wrong way so I want to replace them.

I just purchased some super small super strong rare earth magnets about the size of a dime. My idea is to sew them in to the seem of the shirt so that it just magically holds its self closed. I would then of course have the useful part of the frog clips removed without, hopefully, removing there aesthetic presence on the shift. I have several ideas on how this could work but I do not have the skill or the knowledge to pull this off my self.

Is there someone out there who thinks they might be up to the challenge? I would of course be more then willing to pay or trade you for your time.

I'm not working at the moment so i can meet up with you pretty much any time in the next two weeks. ( before bm ) =]

Thanks so much!

Is anyone up for a Crafty party in July?
I could host it at my home (South San Jose) I have a large dinning room table, that will seat 8 comfortably for crafting, 10 if mix a few thin or petite crafters. ;)
I could do it the following weekends of July, 22nd or 29th, if a weekday evening is preferred let me know what would work for everyone.
Thursday evenings are out for me since I host Star Trek night at my house for a gathering of friends.

I am wondering how it is. If they allow booth sharing--? If so--I might be looking for someone to share with (who doesn't make jewelry or mosaics). This festival looks very cool.

Please let me know if you have experience there!

I would especially love to hear from someone who has been a vendor of jewelry or mosaics.

Thanks!

I was wondering if anyone had ideas or know-how on making feather fans. I'm headed to a fabulous party and the theme is Mardi Gras and I would love to make some fans for gifts. I have found the fans and I can find the feathers I just need to know if there's a good technique I can use so they don't look so homemade. I feel like there's more to it then just gluing feathers to the fans. Is there?
I'm looking to make hand fans for now, but I plan on making some big dance ones later.
Thanks

On Saturday May 13th, Precita Eyes will be hosting our annual Mural Awareness Month Festival at Precita Park from 1 to 5pm. The event is free and open to the public and is always lots of fun. This year at the festival, we will have a “paint-off” mural competition, a live mural performance on stage with local music, children’s and community mural arts projects, our annual awards presentation, as well as food and drinks. YOU ARE INVITED TO HAVE YOUR OWN BOOTH AT THE FESTIVAL. You may exhibit work, sell mural or other art merchandise, or do a demonstration of an arts project. There is no charge for the booth as artists are responsible for providing their own tables and chairs. Booths are available on a first come first served basis. The deadline to sign up has been extended to April 18th so contact us ASAP with a description and/or photos of your art and any questions about the festival. We look forward to hearing from you and having you at the festival.

Hey all just picking brains of all you expert crafters.
I'm working here in SF on a work visa and TECHNICALLY I am only supposed to work in that job area.
I am interested in selling crafts in consignment based stores....

Do many stores need your Social Security number?
I just need to make sure that I don't have any INS problems -
we all know how selling mittens illegaly can impact on the employment opportunities
of the average american citizen!
But given the current climate - I don't want to start doing something that could be problematic down the way....

This is a company that I have taken training with in the past and I recommend them. They are currently offering inexpensive business classes in the bay area [extends to Vacaville, so be sure to read!], I encourage you to pursue them:

Hi

I am new to this tribe. I have a studio in Berkeley where I work on ceramics and PMC (precious metal clay). I am a certified PMC artisan. I teach PMC classes. My favourite method of ceramic firing is any method that I have to work with the fire. So I love pit fires, raku and sagar firings. In the summer, me and my studio mate usually teach at least one pit fire class. It is a lot of work but there is no other method that can accomplish what pit firing does.

I also design and make latex clothing. I love the material and what I can do with it.

I do many other crafts and having been sewing more and more. In March I am going to get a seger for my birthday. I am looking at the best/easist to thread so if anyone has any suggestions I would be open to them.

Have a crafty day everyone!
~Theresa (who seems to be spending her food budget at the JoAnne's closing sale in Pleasant Hill)

I posted it in "Events" down there under the listings but I thought I would also point out to y'all that I go to a craft group the first Wednesday of the month in the Campbell library (three Crafty vixens go to this as well!) and we're always looking for new people who want to hang out! This coming week one person will be showing us how to use resin in crafts, something I always wanted to know about (fun with plastics!) Anyway, maybe that could hold ya over 'till we have another official CV meet-up?

Gathering spots for vixens

I've started this thread in order to compile a list of possible CVBA gathering locales. If you know of a place that:
is willing to accommodate a group of 4-15+ crafters;
doesn't mind us hanging around for a few hours;
is BART/Public transport accessible;
and a definite plus would be a place that serves food & drink (or allows you to bring your own)

Some people have mentioned that libraries allow groups(Rockridge does not!). Others have suggested a member's home or public park. If you know of anyplace or are willing to host at your own home, please post the info here.

Until then, here are a few places that I've gathered from other postings:

Julie's Coffee & Tea Garden -- Alameda
http://www.juliestea.com/

Muddy Waters -- San Francisco
http://www.muddywaterscoffeehouse.com/index.html

Ritual Coffee Roasters -- San Francisco
http://ritualroasters.com/

Stitch -- San Francisco
http://www.stitchlounge.com/lounge.htm

The Canvas Cafe -- San Francisco
http://www.artbusiness.com/canvascafe.html

and i'm sure there are more!

I'm devoting this Sunday, December 18th, to working on unfinished art and craft projects. I've already opened it up to a few friends and thought as long as I've got the room why not invite local vixens for a pre-holiday stitch & bitch.

I live in the San Jose/Santa Clara area (near Santa Row). If you're interested message me and I'll send you all the pertinent info.

Hi,

I'm reposting my reply to a previous long thread in case that one gets buried.

Are people still interested in meeting tomorrow? If so, and if you're undecided about Muddy's, here's another suggestion:

Cafe Commons, 3161 Mission (at Precita Ave.), (415) 282-2928

--It's pretty big AND has a back patio
--It's not too crowded
--It serves plenty of snacks, in addition to coffee, tea, etc.
--The owner is a sweetheart
--It's a five-minute walk from 24th Street BART (past Cesar Chavez)
--Street parking isn't too bad in that hood

don't know about you guys, but my calendar fills up so fast these days that planning a day here and a day there is tough - especially with a large group of people. i can't even get my 4 best girlfriends together for dinner!!!

So i was thinking that it would be nice to have a "regularly scheduled" CVBA gathering. It could be once a month, every other month, every 6 months, whatever.... we could rotate through a list of gatherings and explore the many places the bay area has to offer. sooooo......

i'd like to propose that the third Saturday of every month become CVBA Saturday! and for those of you who can't do weekends, how bout first Wednesday's???? If you go to both, you get two gatherings every month! Does anyone want to try a weekday gathering?

without a doubt, not everyone will be able to or want to come to every gathering. but they can be planned on tribe with the hopes that you can participate. if you can... right on!

if we can pick a new location around the bay area for each gathering we should know what we've got to choose from. i've started another thread that lists a bunch of regular gathering holes.
http://tribes.tribe.net/craftyvixensbayarea/thread/4cf0707a-571c-4b88-8dc8-0a381c7dd956?newpostingid=e085e9c5-821f-4678-8ab6-6ff90aa2b3b2#e085e9c5-821f-4678-8ab6-6ff90aa2b3b2

if you know of more, post em up!

So what do you guys think?

It will help a great deal if you just let me know you plan to attend our First CV Gathering, and what you might like to munch on while there.... Julie "aims to please!", so she wants a 'head count' and informal 'pre-order' to make sure she accommodates us :o)

BTW, you can PM me if you have any further questions, suggestions, etc.

Okay, well.... HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!!!

Bay Area Craft Groups already in existence?

I am a member of a South Bay Craft Group that coordinates through Craftster.org that's super cool:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=33790.0

And I know that Craftster has an East Bay Group too:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=18469.30

I know that the Get Crafty Web Site has some meetings listed too:
http://www.getcrafty.com/viewtopic.php?t=1361

You know of any others?
