Pricing and sizing??

topic posted Mon, July 2, 2007 - 6:08 PM by  dress up alice
I am working out pricing for skirts, dresses and such.
But sizing is really hard for me. What I call a 7 some women want to call a 5.
Is there a universal guide out there?
Or can I write on my tags 40" waist? Seems sensitive.
What about S-M-L? It seem like I could go that route but that there would still be a
big verience in the actuality of how the dress or skirt fits.

Pricing you girls covered a little in my other topic...but.
What about prices on the street vs. in store pricing. It seems people think
street vending is cheeper. I would like to be competitive with store prices
and sell to the public. Prices as fallows: Sun Dress $85; Tea Dress pull over $70 zipper $75; Fan skirt $65; Ruffled Skirt $55; Mens shirts $68; Mens pants $55(reconstucted) Mens pants $70; Mens shorts $45; Little girls dresses $50

Also what about changing prices???
Thank you oh so much again.

    Re: sizing

There are no industry standards... you can call your sizes anything you want... but be sure to provide a measurements chart that goes with it *and* make sure you stick to your own standards... here is an example of an online retailer who provides industry standards, and all the standards of the vendors/desigers they carry... so, they are saying: sizing is up to you... here is some info, but you make the call of which size you want to order... www.alight.com/sizing-guidelines.html (er. these sizes are for plus size women, might not apply to your products, but they are my favorite example of sizing information)...

you also can do it like print catalogs do, where they show the diagram of the body and how to measure yourself... and then provide the cahrt with the measuremenst for each size... www.alight.com/sizing-guidelines.html

have one handy at the tables you sell at, and have one on your website/etsy page

regarding pricing: yours sound good to me, but if course you should cover your costs and basic business operations (you should be able to afford to get your scissors sharpened off the profits of the business), and of course a cut for yourself for doing the work... just add it all up and set the price accordingly.

Thanks for the tips. I think I am going to make my own chart. Sounds like the only dirrect way to go. Starting out I am feeling a little overwelmed. There are just so many details that I knew could be there but didn't KNOW that it was quite this extencive. I am just now starting to log my hours for pieces and haven't yet taken on the price it costs in matirials for each one. Something I will start doing soon. It just seems like a lot of work, right now. I just hope that once the standards are set, planning ahead is normal and systems are avalible it will be a lot easier.
I won't give up yet....just joking...I will never give up.

Ok one more thing. So what if I am not super duper about putting in zippers. I try and try and my last semi-success is ok but I feel insecure about it. But it really is the best I can do. Then someone points it out. Ugg! Not a costomer just a friend or someone I know. Should I really be worried about the price, should I mark it down? Some of them come out better than others and I am getting cleaner but what about the ones that make me feel insecure. All the other work is great and seam less, so it feels like I should keep prices regular even if the zipper isn't perfect.

you have to get better at putting in zippers... soon. then you will raise your prices (probably up another $5)... a zipper has an important function in clothing and installing it correctly will help the garment fit better, wear better, and look better.

get better at putting in zippers.

I like to put in zippers in a three step method.
-First, with right sides facing together, both the fabric and the zipper with the teeth touching the right side of the fabric. Sew a nice straight line about 3/8" in using a zipper foot.
-Then, fold the zipper back, iron your seam down so it's straight.
-Then top stitch the fabric onto the zipper. Voila! Excellent zipper installation.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it works :)

I agree Dora. That is the same method my granny and mom taught me, and it has never failed me even on satin!

Alice, I also have to agree that sizing is so NOT universal. Every time I shop, I try everything on because no two manufacturers fit the same or size the same. I liked your measurements idea. Seems the most specific to me.
