Help. I need ideas for bringing people into my store.
Here's what I've done so far:
took out an ad in the local newspaper, donated gift certificate to local Catholic school silent auction. Left flyers and class schedules in the following places:
post office, hair salons, grocery stores and Libraries in both Sikeston and Charleston. Visited City Halls of both Bertrand and Charleston and chatted up the staff while leaving flyers.
I'm on a heavily travelled road and I have a HUGE sign in the front yard and I hang a large, colorful quilt from the front porch when I'm open for business.
I joined the local quilters guild, volunteered for a position on the board and handed out my fall class list at their meeting.
I've also gone on the web and listed my store on every quilt and sewing related site that has store listings. I've joined the AQS in Paducah and am listed on their site as well.
How else can I get the word out?

- try influencer marketing. Find out who the influencers are in particular sub-markets and "befriend" them in person. Go to meet them, invite them in, give them product samples... do everythign you need to do to get the influencer to know you in person, so that when she is asked for a recommendation, she is doing it by personal knowledge.
- try events marketing. Create an event, such as a class or demonstration or even a trunk show of completed projects. In this one, you don't have to limit the event as targeted toward quilters, you could target it toward quilt buyers. For example, if a husband is the one who buys the quilts for his wife, let him learn you have a good store. Then, when he talks about quilts, which he will, he can spread the word about your store.
- combo marketing. THere are many segments that you can reach... old folks home nurses are often in a position to influence, hospital nurses, school teachers, crafts teachers, children, youth group organizers... create events that target these "influencers" and now you have combined influencer marketing with events marketing.
- competitions.
- unique giveaways... not your run of hte mill printed pens or potholders (though we all appreciate those when we get em!), but try something innovative and memorable.... how about a clock... for the quilter who wishes she had more time to quilt!
ok those are off the top of my head, i am sure there are more if i actually sit down and think about it.

Re: traffic
Sun, October 29, 2006 - 1:54 PMThis probably won't do you as much good as it does me, given that I'm more or less just an online businss, but you might want to look into getting a google ad. It is possible to target them so that only people searching from near your store location will see the ad, and you only pay for it if people are actually following the ad to your site, but you DO need to have a website for the ad to point at, so if you don't have a site associated with your store, that won't work.
Just a thought.

Mon, October 30, 2006 - 11:04 AMbuilding a business is sloooooooow.
Offer some fabrics that nobody has access to, in exclusive collections or from exotic localles. Hold a trunk show of a fabric designer. hold a competition for best quilt using X fabrics (purchased at the shop, ofcourse) publish/display the results.
Be an inspiring person. You've got a good long list, there, keep on keeping on.

Tue, November 28, 2006 - 2:48 PMread "Guerilla Marketing" if you haven't already. It's full of good cheap ideas for small business marketing.
be patient. the more times people see your business, ads, etc, the more likely they are to come in. consistency is key. don't give up on all the good ideas you've already started using; keep using them. consistent advertising inspires confidence in your commitment to your business and your customers. I have had consistent business since I started reposting my ad weekly so it would stay near the top of the listings on the site I use. I also use the same ad for 3-6 months to give it a chance to catch people. changing all the time reduces recognition.
You are doing a great job, already. you may just need to keep on with what you are doing and be patient. :) if you need reassurance that what you are doing is working, keep track of how your customers heard of you. you can also ask your loyal customers about what they liked about your marketing, anywhere they were surprised they didn't see you, etc.
random thoughts: enter your quilts in competitions, shows, etc. do a gallery type show at a coffee shop or other local business that shows art. -

Re: traffic
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 5:31 PMThanks, I needed the encouragement. This week I picked up an embroidery project, binding a quilt someone else did, and hemming a tablecloth. Not very glamorous, but I pin a flyer and a list of classes to every invoice. And it seems people are beginning to find me. I took out ads for my Kids Sewing Camp in the Charleston (MO) and East Prairie newspapers.
Keep your fingers crossed, or say a prayer. Or both. -

Sun, January 28, 2007 - 2:59 PMsorry this is late as far as replies go....
I discovered my absolutely favorite Indian fabric store by accident, I never would have gone in
they had a sign up on the grass, sort of like a realestate sign,
and it said fabric $1.00 yard
Im a fabriholic and zoom! I turned around and was in the store, yep they had stuff that was $1 a yard, and it looked it, but all the other yummies kept me there and kept me spending money there
so maybe you need to have cheap sale just to get some bodies in , and maybe you will hook a few of them for repeat non sale business
