Workshops

Does anyone on here do workshops related to their craft or as part of thier business? I am wondering if anyone has used Craigs List to advertise workshops and if so if you have any words of advice about this type of advertising.

Thanks,

wow, this is a good question. i never even considered craigslist for my workshops, good idea. i will tell you, doing workshops is tricky. i have coordinated a few, but have pulled off none. most people flake if you don't ask for a registration fee, and most people don't sign up if you have a registration fee. i have many individual students who even know each other and when i try to get a group workshop together, it just never comes off.

so, i would love to discuss workshops in general. most of my clients are word of mouth.

Note: my lessons are job training in the fashion industry, so people tend to sign up to increase job skills.

I've not used Craiglist, but we have used the adult education listings for our school dstrict.

Adult education listings wouldn't work for me since I do Pasty Making Workshops and Burlesque Teaser workshops (still being developed), so it's probably not a good fit but I'm going to mention that idea with some friends. I am waiting to see how things will go with the workshops I have booked for February and March but so far it is looking good.

I contacted one of the local stores that does a lot of workshops and have one of my own scheduled in March. This is really good for me because they have a very big mailing list and do a lot of advertising in the local papers and such. I'm also lucky enough to have a guest spot in Little Woo's ABC's of Burlesque workshop (she's huge in Vancouver). For me, I think these are excellent ways to get off the ground but I think I'd like to be reaching more people from outside the community of burlesque fans.

A friend on another tribe said that he sometimes uses Craigs List and that it has worked well.

I haven't had much luck with Craigs list for workshops. But I do teach. Anything that gets people in the store is good. Once in the store, they rarely leave without buying something. Besides, their workshop fees are like free money. They are basically paying for what's in my head.
        A very scary thought.

Workshops can be used to support all sorts of other endeavors. Besides the shop, I teach classes from my own line of patterns, boosting sales and generating interest in the other patterns I sell.

Teaching through an established store like you mentioned can be a great thing. Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

Maybe so, but isn't that all teaching ever is- regardless of the subject?

            Yes, that's what teaching is.

But I know what all is in my head. And even I'm scared. hahahaha
