i want to make bath salts, using peppermint and eucalyptus oils. Do i need to add a carrier oil to the epson salt and sea salt? or can i just buy the essential oils without the carrier oil? i also know that i could do a sea salt and kosher salt blend, or a sea salt and baking soda blend. my issue is with what type of oils to use.
This is to be a gift for a friend, so any imput would be great.

Thu, March 27, 2008 - 9:12 AMI have not made bath salts personally, but definitely be careful about the amount of peppermint oil you use. Wouldn't want to melt anything off of your friend lol. -

Re: Bath Salts
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 10:10 AMI would imagine you won't need a carrier oil, as the essentials put in bath salts won't necessarily be put in quantity directly on the skin. However, I'd be sparing with both oils, as they are both very strong! I tried to make a facial steam once using lavender and peppermint. You'd think refreshing, right? The peppermint that close to my face turned on my faucets faster than cayenne pepper! I thought my eyes were going to melt out of my head! Learning experience, needless to say! Just be sure to research your stuff before making it.

Re: Bath Salts
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 8:36 PMI have made bath salts with Epsom salts....never used a carrier, but you do have to be cautious - teeny drops and stir, stir, stir!
Also second what other posts mention...go easy with your eo's. eucalyptus andpepperment will pack some punch!
Another fun thing is to add a little food color to tint the salts (and the water).
Somewhere around here I have a recipe for baking soda bath bombs, like the kind Lush makes...they fizz and dissolve in the bath.
Make sure you make enough to "test" the bath salts yourself (ahhhhhhhh)....LOL

Re: Bath Salts
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 9:23 AMI always use baking soda in all my bath salts. And blended herbs usually as well. I directly put essential oils without carrier oils. You can also add blended/ground oatmeal if you want! A little something extra...teehee. I've also heard of milk baths. Maybe powdered milk wouldn't hurt to add? It could be an experiment! yay! I usually blend the whole mixture...those larger grains of salt suck sometimes....teehee...smaller ones dissolve quicker! :]

Re: Bath Salts
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 12:19 PMI use a base mix of 1/2 Epsom Salts, 1/4 part Baking Soda, 1/4 part Sea Salt. You can also use 1/3 of each. Then I mix oils in them, and it works awesome! Since I live in the West again where it is dry, they last a long time, but when I lived in North Carolina, I would have to use them up fast so they didn't clump, and I never did figure out how to not get them to clump hehehe! If I made 2 cups of salts, I could use around 20 or so drops of oils for plenty of smell and they mixed well in the salts. I never tried coloring them either. Good luck!
