Hi everyone! I’m new to the group and wanted to say, “Hi.” and make some new friends. I love to do crafts of all kinds. I crochet, knit, bead, sew (cross stitching, machine sewing and hand sewing), sketch, scrapbook, paint and those are just the few I can think of off the top of my head. My favourite craft would have to be crochet and I have been doing it for as long as I can remember. I have only recently gotten back into crocheting because I have been too busy. Thanks for reading I would love to get to know everyone! BTW my names Amber.

Hello friends! I am part of a little group on Ravelry called the Bad Knit Girls. Find out more aobut us at www.badknitgirls.com. Every month we have a competition where people vote to decide who should be the next Bad Knit Girl. Starting Saturday, the polls opened for the July Bad Knit Girl competition. This group has had such an unexpected and wonderful impact on my life, and has quickly become my favorite group on Ravelry..the place where I feel at home and open to express myself. I would love nothing more than to represent this group of ladies, and so I’m asking for your support and your vote. This is my second time running and this time its special because July is my birthday month. So make me a happy birthday girl and vote for Megzilla!

Thank you, and I love you all.
Meg

I just started crocheting a new hipband. When I was younger, I hated single crochet because it took forever compared to say doing a bunch of shell stitches or triple crochets. But as I've gotten older and wiser I've discovered that the single crochet gives the most solid base for embellishing later on. (Like hanging tassles onto it for example). Keep in mind you can also crochet with twine, hemp, ribbon, wire and plastic bags cut into spiral strips. Bigger threads require bigger hooks.
For example with that seashell bra in the photo gallery, another approach would have been to thread all the beads only the string and then crochet medallions (scrumbles), sliding each shell up as needed and crocheting around it. If you do it on one long string you only have two ends to sew in per medallion when all is said and done, saving lots of time.

13 is my lucky number! There's 13 of us, but not a lot of action in this tribe. I thought it might be fun to host a swap if anyone is interested.
I know I could use a little inspiration and motivation to play with some ideas for projects I've got ratteling around in my head.

Let me know what you guys think, or who's interested and I'll get a game plan together.

Today I pulled out a project I've been working on for a few years now. It was originally a dress to wear on Halloween, and I didn't finish it on time and back in the bag it went. This has gone on for several years now so today I attempted again to get all the pieces to play well together. This would be way simpler with either a dressform or a fitting buddy because the front half is done and I can't seem to get the back half together. Next time I'll do the whole front first, the whole back second and work flat, then put them together along the sides at the very end. Still, I have so much time invested in it now I'm not about to give up. I finished the left sleeve today. When it cools off in here I'll give it another go. It's just too hot to be trying this thing on over and over again.

I always try to encourage crocheters to learn to knit and knitters to learn to crochet, because they go well together. Many a time you need to put a crochet trim around the edge of something you knit. Or you can use crochet to join pieces of knitting. Or you can crochet flowers to add to your knitting items.
You can also take a crocheted piece, fish up some loops around the edge of the piece, thread a knitting needle through the loops as you go, and then start knitting! That makes for some exciting texture changes as you explore the possibilities of morphing the two together.

I just read a post on a yahoo group for free form crochet, and someone said their young daughter had taken quite well to free form and was even making gifts for everyone. It makes sense...children are much more willing to try new things. And if they have their own project going, they'll hardly resent the time you spend on yours. Once they know the basics you can sit side by side with them and have some quality time.
If they are too young for that, they are happy decorating a paper plate or a piece of cardboard by gluing on odd bits of yarn.

I think I have enough pieces, but the tricky part is putting the puzzle together. At any rate it will have to wait until after the Morro Bay Harbor Festival. At this point, it's too unwieldy to take with me, and I don't want to risk losing parts of it on the long drive. I found some more seashells to incorporate into it. And it's been a lot of fun. But I had to set it aside to get some of the paid work done.

I lost my hook again

Dagnammit...I can't find the crochet hook I need, nor can I find my box of hooks. The more I try to get organized, the worse of a disaster I create. Hmpf. I wish my evil twin would stop messing things up.
The free form yahoo group I'm in is doing a Free Form Crochet challenge. And I was hoping to make some progress on it today. So I better get back to looking.
Also, I want to make a freeform bra and hipband for belly dancing. I'm glad costumes have finally gotten more creative. When I first combined ethnic and cabaret I got dirty looks and snarky comments. Now so many people are doing it it even has it's own name...tribaret. Raspberry to all those people that made snarky remarks.

Big Sale at Joanne's in OC,CA

If you happen to live in Orange County CA, and can get to the Joanns in Cypress on Katella, they are closing the store and moving to a big new Super Store on Lincoln. So everything is on sale. Right now all the yarn dept. items at 30% off and they are extremely well stocked with knitting needles in straight, circular and bamboo, and crochet hooks in every size. All the books are on sale too. Literally, everything in the store is 20% off or better.
Their goal is to have the entire store empty by the end of Oct. so the discount will keep getting better as the days roll by. But the longer you wait, the more things will be picked over.
So I went ahead and bought 2 sets of double pointed needles, a double ended crochet hook and some sewing patterns. All their sewing patterns (even Vogue) are $1.99 right now.

What the heck is she going on about?

If you are like me, you have bags full of half finished granny squares, gauge rectangles, strips of knitting that never quite gelled into what you'd plan on them being, and bizarre bags of projects some great aunt gave you that you have no hope in the world of figuring out and finishing.
So, grab those oddballs, figure out what you want to make (ie. poncho, vest, blanket), and start laying out all those pieces like a big jigsaw puzzle. Of course you'll see a lot of blank spots where the pieces don't quite fit. Pin it all together with safety pins, and then start knitting or crocheting new motifs to fill those gaps. Whipstitch or crochet it all together and you have ART!
