Workshop Descriptions:
Integrating Tarot and dance as a spiritual practice - Sugati
Throughout history, the tarot has traveled from sacred oracle to sideshow attraction, and then back again to an introspective practice in which we can better know ourselves. Within this workshop we will encounter how our dance can be a healing practice, one that opens a channel from our bodies to our spirits, while still incorporating the mind. Within this relaxed environment we will use improvisational Middle Eastern-inspired dance to power a connection, forming a relationship between the movements that we’ve learned and drilled as dancers and the ancient art of reading the tarot. Revealing how powerful it can be for our bodies to meet and take part within our spirituality.

Circadian, finding your inner and outer rhythm - Katie Bertsche
Rhythms fill our lives, from our waking and sleeping, walking, eating, coming and going...tides, the seasons, day and night, our habits and instincts join us with all dancing living things. And of course, Rhythm is the heart of bellydance. We'll explore together different ways to hear rhythm in music, and how we can translate that into movement. Is the music fast? slow? syncopated? even? Do you express the rhythm in yourself or can you have a conversation with it? What do you do when there apparently is no rhythm...we'll have to make our own!

Pops and Locks Laced with Smoove Slink - Joy Herbst
Are you craving more slink peppered with some syncopated locks in your tribal fusion dancing?
In this class Joy will lead you through style defining drills and exercises to better toggle between snake-like movements
and pops and locks. Combinations will be taught integrating the techniques learned in class.

Free Rhythm Warmup with Chris Phillips
We'll spend some time warming up and going over basic middle eastern rhythms. All drummers, musicians and dancers are welcome to join in. Free.

Begintermediate Dumbek with Dwayne Green
Beginners and intermediate dumbek players will enjoy learning and embellishing basic rhythms with Dwayne.

Hello All!

As we watch the CD slowly approach extinction, we are reminded of what music was before it became plastic discs in plastic boxes. Before it became copied, recorded or written. Before it became a product to sell. Music, in all its formless forms, is an experience. Created, shared, often danced to or prayed along with; whether you’re making it or hearing it, when it’s over, it’s gone--just a memory. It many parts of the world, music is still communal and utilitarian. Intimately woven into daily life.
Rhythm is hard-wired into us. It’s part of what makes us human. Drumming is our primal instinct. It helps connect us with ourselves, our surroundings, and with others, regardless of status, ideas, or appearance.

Hope you can join us for these community drumming events:

Parting is such sweet sorrow...

This is The Final Gathering. I can hardly believe it. Sugati and I have been blessed with all your beautiful, creative energies for so long now, it's difficult to think of this as the end.

But end it we must, and we would ask you to cancel all your plans, drive as far as you dare, hear the drummer's call and DO NOT MISS THIS! This promises to be one radically rhythmic wing-ding!

Feel free to bring libations and food (vegetarian at least, preferably vegan) for your own nourishment but to share as well, if you are so moved...

blessings, Chris
Friday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m.
FREE

What do you feel when the moon is full? Extra hairy? A desire to swell with the rising tide? Illuminated with the urge to dance and make music and dance some more? Let the lunar rhythms guide the music and the motion making you move on this magnificent night.

The Tribe follows no specific dogma, we are coming together in what was once the oldest synagogue in Connecticut. It is an evening of merrymaking, pure and simple, dress outrageously, have a little wine, drum and dance and laugh and sing, my friends.

Drummers, Dancers, Musicians and Others will gather every full moon to participate in a truly tribal experience. We will start with basic Middle-Eastern rhythms to get the dancers moving and see where we go from there. Please bring instruments, the desire to dance or the enthusiasm to share in a tribal experience. Extra drums and other percussion will be available as well.

Please consider joining the tribe for updates and an open exchange of ideas for all facets of this event, http://tribes.tribe.net/gatheringofthetribalmooninhartford

drum my friends,
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.
revolution is happening in your hips and hands
let me be free - let you be free too
free to laugh and sing and drum and dance
drum my friends,
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.

Rhythm is within us. Rhythm surrounds us.
The rythm of our breath, of the seasons, of our life.
This time of year can sometimes push us out of our natural rhythm.
Drumming can both relax AND energize. Group drumming empowers us to share our spirit in ways that we often
don't or can't express in our daily lives.
I hope you can join us at these upcoming events.

Friday 12/28: 7:15-9:00p at the Unitarian Society of New Haven 700 Hartford Tpke in Hamden
Friday 1/4: 7:30-9p at Sitka Wellness Center 64 Cherry Street in Milford

Aloha--
Sunday, December 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Gathering of the Tribal Moon - Saturday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m.

I know what you're asking yourself, fireworks or the Tribal Gathering? How about both! We start the jam at 7:30 and then there's plenty of time to walk to the closest place to see the bombs bursting in air which are scheduled for 9:45 p.m., enough time to get some dancing and drumming in...

We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance ~ Japanese Proverb

*** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ***
Connecticut PURE chapter will be having a rehearsal on Saturday July 7th at 6 p.m., right before Gathering of Tribal Moon at Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford. New dancers and drummers welcome! Chris and I would love to see some more faces, so please spread the word to interested people you know. Please do come, and stay for the gathering afterwards.
Gathering of the Tribal Moon
Charter Oak Cultural Center
Saturday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m.

We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance ~ Japanese Proverb

Gathering of the Tribal Moon
Charter Oak Cultural Center
Friday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Please consider joining the tribe for updates and an open exchange of ideas for all facets of this event, tribes.tribe.net/gathering...inhartford

drum my friends,
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.
revolution is happening in your hips and hands
let me be free - let you be free too
free to laugh and sing and drum and dance
drum my friends,
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.

More gatherings!!!! mark your calendars!

A Sacred Drum

I came across this and really dug it........

Blessings,

Gaia Star (Jacq)

A Sacred Drum

A sacred drum stands. It is big and deep. The sacred sound surrounds.

It is the mantra of the earth speaking richness, masculine and feminine
energy as one deep tone.

We are one in this beauty.

Each touch of the drum takes us deeper into the center.

And the center is the curvature of space into the infinite dimension of the divine.

The drum is the curve and the center.

The many doors are one door. And the one door is the many.

The sound is the flood of the infinite.

The drum vibrates, resonates, sustains the deep tone.

An elk races in the wind, his heart song leaping from the great drum that he
has given himself for and we acknowledge his spirit.

And we acknowledge the spirit of the cottonwood whose second life carries the
heartbeat of the earth again. Who stood tall and strong, connected to the
mother's heart that sustains us all, now pulses again with the sacred life.

And we flow in appreciation, entering the great circle the drum now fills.
The stories flow from us into each other becoming the one story.

There is one sound, one consciousness.
Many voices, one consciousness.
