  • I have a favorite ice cream shop here in the S.F. Bay Area. It's in Berkeley, on College Ave, and it's called Ici. They make the ice cream daily, and have great flavors, my favorite being burnt caramel and pink peppercorn. Another good flavor is the rosemary and pinenut praline.
    yummy!
Oh, they also make their own cones, which has a chocolate filled tip, so the last bite is as good as the first!
  • My favorite used to be Ben & Jerry's vanilla. My fave now? A good butter pecan or chocolate.

Can anyone help me find a great national--or California--vanilla ice cream? (Or, tell me if you've eaten B & J's vanilla recently and the flavor's back to pre-Unilever quality.) I've not been impressed by Strauss Family--but haven't tried this one in a couple years, either

(I hope you don't mind that I came close to hijacking this thread, Story.)
    • Chris, you know you can hijack my threads anytime haha!
We aren't victims, we are truly welcoming, I mean, I speak for myself, at least haha

      Well, I can't speak for Ben & Jerry's because I avoid dairy...
I haven't found any valuable vanilla flavor from non dairy products though, maybe Philip makes a wonderful one, I wouldn't doubt about it.
But let's not forget vanilla beans have to be shipped from Madagascar or la Réunion

and it seems even from Maui??

      That's a bit closer!

      Voila!

      • Thanks, Story.

I appreciate the links and the reminder about vanilla. For me, if something's "alive", like a pineapple or banana, I don't buy it. If it's historically or customarily dried, roasted, or otherwise processed, I don't mind buying from across the country or overseas. So I will buy wines, cheeses, chocolates, spices, etc. from far away, but not apples, lettuce, etc. I will occasionally buy Ranier cherries (I assume they're picked from Mt. Ranier, but maybe that's just a variety name?), and, every couple of years, I buy a few bananas.
        • Ahh, haven't had those cherries yet.
As a matter of fact you made me just learn about them!

          Thanks Chris.
I totally agree with your consuming behavior, I mostly buy in season from my local farmers, I believe seasonal food brings you what you need for that specific season...
We've been enjoying the first strawberries of the season (Maxine and I made a wish when we gobbled our fist ones hee hee) and it feels so good when you wait for that very time when you can enjoy them...
I have to say they are really goooooood!!! AND local!
In France, my favorite one comes from my south west area and is called Mara des bois (from the woods) and I just found out it can be found here on US soil, about 60 miles north of San Diego, so if you go that route you want to stop and taste them, they are very unique hmmmm

But let's go back to cherries, shall we?
I have to say cherries are my fav because I was born in June and between the age of 12 and 17 we had 4 cherry trees in our yard + one in our neighbor's backyard but they were ours as well as those people were never there, it was their vacation house.
I can't tell you how many cherries we ate, we would ask friends to "help out" so they wouldn't die on the tree cause there were so many, how many clafoutis we baked

          Ahhhh, talk about orgasm!!
Now, I'm not sure why my mom never canned them or preserved them, she was a great cook, but that's mostly the two ways we would eat them, perhaps they were actually gone before we could preserve them, who knows, my memory might be altered, I was younger back then and childhood memories are flawed.
Ahhhh cherries, I actually wrote a poem about cherries:

My heart is made of berries

My heart is made of berries
Comes June I will have cherries
          Birthday harvesting cheers
Savings of sounds to my ears

My heart is made of berries
