Defretted Cümbüs Mandolin

As it occurs with cumbus guitars, cumbus mandolins can have also wrong distances between frets. Mine didn't sound well, so I decided to make my 2nd defretting (the first was against my classical guitar) and do some fretboard finishing - ebony painting, epoxying and varnishing. These are the results.

This is a little better light i think. This had a broken L Bracket, a dented can, and rusty tuners. I also had to re-drill the screw holes in the neck where it attatches to the bracket. The existing holes were setting the neck at too extreme an angle. And i got a new bridge.....Yeah!

The case that came with my Cumbus didn't offer much protection ( and is always full of cats) so I tried a resonator tenor banjo case from the Super Quality gig bag co. of Canada and it is a real good fit and offers a lot more protection. Try one.

This is the instrument I built about a month before I got my Cumbus. It's fretless, use four courses of nylon strings, and has a certain Oudishness of sound, but is extremely loud. I'm posting this because the Oudalin is sad and lonely now that I've joined you Cumbus people.

This is one of the best known photos from the famous Turkish photographer Ara Güler. The instruments depicted are a turkish darbuka, a violin, a long-necked lute which I can't exactly identify and finally a cümbüs. Its fingerboard seems to be decorated... It had to be the 50's or 60's.

Here you go Raul, theres Ali Seven and his instrument. I thought I'd returned the record, but found it under a pile of magazines yesterday! If you look closely at the head stock, you can see two more tuners at the bottom, they look uneven to the rest so he probably added them himself.

Check this guy out, look closely at his instrument, theres a pickup at the end of the neck. I love the teddy-bear stickers all over the face as well :D.

This is the family shop/factory where all cumbus instruments are produced. It is on Ataturk Bulvari on the edge of the Bosphorus in Istanbul.
