Just got my Cumbus! + intro + question

Hi everyone,

Some of you know me from other tribes (though I don't post much), and some of you may have met me in person. I've had the privilege of playing with Carmine a couple of times, which really turned me on to playing Middle Eastern music. (I play a bunch of instruments, but have been focusing on violin and viola for the last couple of years.) I owe this cumbus purchase to Carmine's influence. :-)

I finally took the plunge and ordered one of the "scratch-n-dent" cumbuses from Lark-in-the-Morning. I've heard people have had issues with Lark in the past, but I've ordered a few things from them over the years, and all my experiences have been very positive. This was no exception. I was visualizing some road-kill instrument arriving, and was very pleasantly surprised to see that this cumbus had one little dent in it - that's all - and that dent saved me $100! Not bad. :-)

I have a tuning question: I tuned it up to D-A-D-f#-a-d (from low to high) (i.e., open-D), and was off the ground right away with being able to play things in D-Hijaz and some of the other "major" D-Maqams (is that the right word?), plus making improvising really easy - the "open" scales are lightning fast, and the octaves make it real easy to set up a rhythm. Another bonus is that this tuning makes it easy to play some of my bottleneck blues stuff (you want to hear some REALLY funky sounds, try playing Delta Blues on a cumbus with a slide! :-) ). Flatting the f# makes the minor scales easy, etc.

I've read through a bunch of other posts on tuning, and haven't seen anyone use these tunings. Am I getting myself in trouble, developing bad habits that will come back to bite me, etc?

Overall, this is one of the most fun instruments I've ever tried. Playing guitar helps a lot, as does playing other fretless strings - intonation seemed to happen very naturally, and shifting and vibrato follow also very naturally from violin/viola.

Thanks for turning me on to this, Carmine!

I don't own a cumbus or an oud (I own a few sazes though) and I'm a guitar player who is familiar
with the D major tuning so I'm also curious about what others have to say about this. You got
me thinking about David Lindley - he also plays oud in addition to lap steel and other string
instruments. I wonder how he tunes his oud?

Hi, i'm pretty sure that D is not a common place to play Hicaz for Turkish music. i believe most Turkish music would be in the A, B or E neighborhood. Arab tuning is off of G, D and C's, generally speaking. So it depends what music you are playing and who you are playing it with.

Çümbüş info - this guy Eric has a nice site: www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~ederer/c...index.html

      Enjoy!

Thanks, David. I've seen Eric's site (very nice!), and the open chord tuning wasn't mentioned. I went with the D tuning because a bunch of Carmine's stuff from dorku.com works reasonably well there. The only complaint I have now, after two whole days :-) is that the lowest string is kind of loose when tuned to D, and sounds buzzy if I use anything but the lightest pick technique - sometimes that's an OK effect, though. I may try an open E tuning in the next few days.

I don't think it really matters in the end what key you play the tunes in. I have recordings of Nihavent Longa in pretty much every key as well as many other Turkish songs.

It's true alot of times i see stuff played in E or A, but this is usually when someone is singing. I have tons of turkish albums and it's definitely a mix.

I think it's more important to tune in a way that will let you play with other musicians.

I don't think the key matters either. Your stuff from dorku.com has become sort of "The Real Book" for us dilettante ME musicians, though - guys like me who mostly play other styles, but like to jam with other musicians at the occasional hafla or whatever. Some of the folks we've played with are sight-readers (as opposed to play-by-ear types), and don't transpose in real-time. So a tuning that would make it hard to play as written would be self-defeating for me. However, retuning, provided it can be done quickly, works pretty well.

I'm going to mess around with a more standard oud tuning (maybe moved up a few steps to avoid the overly loose strings), just to see how it feels.

Merhaba, arkadasim. I just bought a cumbus and (after snapping a couple of strings) have gone with an EABEAD tuning. Are there a lot of cumbus players in and around Istanbul and Edirne? I'll be out there sooooooon.

I have a fretted cumbus (had the neck fitted with an ebony fretboard and fretted by a competent luthier) and I play in DADGAD tuning. I came up with this tuning on my guitar when i was trying to emulate an oud. After a little research, I found that Davey Graham "invented" the tuning while playing with oudists in Morrocco.

I use the 3rd string set (the thinnest wound set) as my high A course as well as my G course. I have a thicker electric guitar string as my low D. The other strings are in their usual places from the cumbus string set.

I don't play turkish music, but I have tried cumbus in the bottleneck style many times. It's a helluva resonator. I use my cumbus for all styles. My current band is an experimental rock group and the cumbus has been a hit.

          Check out this track:

Tabla, ebowed lap steel, cumbus solo.

Really enjoyed the track! I love the way the lap steel and cumbus sound together.

I've played guitar tuned to DADGAD many times, mostly for Celtic sounding stuff. The chord voicings you can get with it are fantastic. The tuning I'm using on the cumbus is actually very similar (just substitute an F# for the middle G). I may try replacing the low D course with heavier strings - that sounds like a really good plan.

Thanks! I played the lap steel as well.

I use a single string, not a course, for my low D. Two strings at that low tension just rattle together and make too much noise. I really can't get the perfect gauge for that low D string. If you figure it out, let me know. Right now, it serves as a sympathetic drone. When I take it off, I notice that it's not ringing when I'm playing on the other strings. I can't actually make it sound good by playing that particular string, however.

I had thought about using a single string for the low D to avoid the buzz. What I've been doing is just pick the low D course more softly, which avoids some buzz. I mostly use it for rhythms and pedal tones, e.g. hit it open at the beginning of a phrase or measure, and let it ring while I'm doing things on the other strings. I haven't really used it as a melody string because of the spaghetti-like quality :-)
