you know, not answering your question but thinking about something else that might help folks....

there is a wooden Cümbüş which might give an interesting sound, and similar to an ud. i have not heard one of these in person. has anybody? apparently they string them with normal Cümbüş strings. i can stop at the shop and ask sometime.

I had a chance to play a wooden staved cümbüş that was for sale at DID. It had the same deep, resonant tone but with none of the metallic ring of an aluminum body. VERY nice. VERY expensive ... somewhere around $600, if I'm remembering correctly. I'll bet that a wooden cümbüş strung with oud strings would have a pretty good tone but might not project as much, volume-wise. Then again, how much does the material of the head come into the equation? Maybe different materials and thicknesses of drumhead could play a factor, too.

I did it years ago after a Turks suggested I try it; it sounded pretty cool with nylon strings, sort of like those old records of oud with a lot of treble and reverb!
It takes some adaptation on the tailpiece to get the nylon string on correctly.

David, the best is to get pliers and make the wound strings flatter at a certain length, very close to the final knot. Then you can put them into the slots without any problem.

      Regards.
