Anybody here mess with the skin tension on their Cumbus? I was just curious how it effects the sound. Mine seems to have a lot of sustain, it sound like reverb kinda. I was thinking maybe more tension on the head would make a more staccato sound.

Re: Skin Tension
Fri, August 8, 2008 - 10:27 AMI notice that my Cumbus stays in tune better when the skin is tighter (when it is loose the adjustment of the tuning pegs seems to push down on the bridge [which has more give on a loose skin] warping the tuning of the other strings). It can be quite frustrating. It definitely changes the texture of the sound though and I would prefer a looser skin if it would stay true to tune.

Re: Skin Tension
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 3:34 PMI have a helluva 'slump' ... if you sighted across the head, my bridge sinks at least 1/4" or more below that sight-line ... but I'm reluctant to tighten the head, 'cos I'm afraid of choking out the tone and the sustain. American banjo players must deal with this same issue, right? Anybody know any knowledgeable banjerists?
