The one I tried was wooden, but I note that that is way more expensive than the metal ones. How is the sound quality between them?
The one I tried had 12 strings, but I notice that there are other options?

What are some good websites I can order from? Or retailers in the Toledo, Ohio; SE Michigan; Indianapolis, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; Cleveland, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Cinncinnati, Ohio; or Louisville, Kentucky area?

Any teachers in the Toledo, Ohio/SE Michigan area?
Because my oud sounds quite a lot louder than my cumbus. I think the oud is overall a much more dynamic instrument in terms of volume. Or maybe it is just the (poor) quality of my cumbus? It is one made by the zeynel company, but quite old so maybe it is just not that good. Is there any way to "crank up" the volume of the cumbus without having to amplify it (new bridge?), because now the sounds just disappears when I jam with some other people.

I actually bought the instrument on a whim off of Ebay, I'd never played it before, but it looked cool, and thought it might be a nice accompaniment to the Gypsy Jug-band fusion band I'm forming. (think Tom Waits meets Gogol Bordello!) Kinda different, but so is the Cumbus right?
Any way as a guitarist I was wondering If i could simply tune my standard Cumbus to the EADGBE I'm most comfortable with, or perhaps a six string Banjo tuning?

It was a guitar cumbus, I think (but the buyer said it was the iron version of an Oud: I can't believe that!): it was out of tune, and after a couple of hours it was still playing strangely pitched... Now I'd like to know: 1) is there any chance to get a guitar cumbus and string & tune it like a proper guitar?
2) if there's no chance, can I play it with chords nonetheless?
3) Where can I find a good instrument?

Hi there, new to this forum.

I was toying lateky with the idea of playing mandolin to add some licks to my guitar playing, and the web being what it is, I find the mando-cumbus (is it the right appellation?)
Anyway, this is the cumbus stringed with 4 double strings, 22" scale length, so mandolin-like instrument.

I have been attracted by the cumbus because it appears (to me) to be the turkish way to make a louder stringed instrument in the context of a sound environnement becoming louder, when, at the same historic time, and for the same reasons, the Dopyera brothers in USA and Mario Macaferri in France were pursuing the same goal. The Dopyera went to invent the resonator line of instruments, which have had great success in the hawïïannsound era in US in the 30's, and are today a staple in delta blues, and Macaferri went to make a serie of guitars for the Selmer company, which happened to please Django Reinhard and are consequently today the favorite model for the gypsy jazz.
These guitars were not originally designed to fit a particular style of music, but are now a bit stucked in somehow narrow niches.
Although I don't play gypsy jazz nor delta blues, I happen to like at the same time the Macaferri's guitars and the resonator guitar, because these guitar seems a good fit for my playing. (I came back to guitar 3 years ago, and found a somewhat personal style)

Finding a few days ago the existence of the dumbus family of instruments seemed to me like a good synchronicity.

So I received the mando-dumbus today, and here are my first impressions :
- I'm not sure if the tuners can keep the tuning.
- I like the crude simplicity of the neck/body assembly. Clever.
But : 1- I'm not sure this design is enough to, once again, keep the tuning stable,
and : 2- on mine, the neck has been screwed a bit off, so the strings are a bit off the neck also. An little piece of aluminium had been used to shim the angle, in a somewhat typical "middle-east" way (don't flame, please, I lived (and loved) enough in North-Africa and India to know what I mean), but the assembly needs some improvment. At first view, not really difficult.
- And it is fine, because, also, the fretboard and fretting itself is... let's say funky. Since my initial goal is to learn mandolin, I'm readily planning to put a mandolin fretboard (13" 7/8 standard mandolin scale) and correct fretting, and so will at the same time make a better fit to the neck/body joint.
Or maybe a complete mandolin neck would be a solution, but I also want a somewhat larger than standard neck, so add a thick fretboard would allow for a wider neck...

I wonder if any of you did make a similar modification, and would like to share experience.

Sorry for the lenghty post, but it is a first. And, being french speaking, you'll forgive my sometimes weird english.

I "think" I could shift down the lowest (in pitch) four courses two positions and then string the 2 lowest courses with a single course of something thicker from an accounstic guitar set.

Has anyone tried this before? If so how did you do it?

Hi everyone,

Some of you know me from other tribes (though I don't post much), and some of you may have met me in person. I've had the privilege of playing with Carmine a couple of times, which really turned me on to playing Middle Eastern music. (I play a bunch of instruments, but have been focusing on violin and viola for the last couple of years.) I owe this cumbus purchase to Carmine's influence. :-)

I finally took the plunge and ordered one of the "scratch-n-dent" cumbuses from Lark-in-the-Morning. I've heard people have had issues with Lark in the past, but I've ordered a few things from them over the years, and all my experiences have been very positive. This was no exception. I was visualizing some road-kill instrument arriving, and was very pleasantly surprised to see that this cumbus had one little dent in it - that's all - and that dent saved me $100! Not bad. :-)

I have a tuning question: I tuned it up to D-A-D-f#-a-d (from low to high) (i.e., open-D), and was off the ground right away with being able to play things in D-Hijaz and some of the other "major" D-Maqams (is that the right word?), plus making improvising really easy - the "open" scales are lightning fast, and the octaves make it real easy to set up a rhythm. Another bonus is that this tuning makes it easy to play some of my bottleneck blues stuff (you want to hear some REALLY funky sounds, try playing Delta Blues on a cumbus with a slide! :-) ). Flatting the f# makes the minor scales easy, etc.

I've read through a bunch of other posts on tuning, and haven't seen anyone use these tunings. Am I getting myself in trouble, developing bad habits that will come back to bite me, etc?

Overall, this is one of the most fun instruments I've ever tried. Playing guitar helps a lot, as does playing other fretless strings - intonation seemed to happen very naturally, and shifting and vibrato follow also very naturally from violin/viola.

Thanks for turning me on to this, Carmine!

Hi there,

My name is Hakan, I'm from Holland. First I wanna warn u about my bad English :)

So let's begin with my story. I was at my uncle's in germany on vacation. I found in there basement the Cümbüs of my grandpa. He died years ago. I took the Cümbüs with me and tried to recover it, cuzz it was in a realy bad shape. If its possibleÍ'll post some picture's how it looks like now.

I think its now ok to play on it, but there is a little problem. I dont know how to play on it nor, tune it. I tried to tune it, but got scared to damage the "centre thing" if i would pull the strings to thight. The centre got pressed in by the bridge, didn't know if that whas normal.

So what I'm actually asking is how I can tune it, is there not a video or something where I can "hear"and "see" how to tune it. The playing part will i learn by my self thenI think, cuzz a realy wanna play on it.

Thank you for your help and responsen.
Has anyone tried this marvel?.

The Turkmen folk group Ashkhabad plays it. Guys could you tell me if this plucked instrument sounding in this song is a Tar?. Maybe it's a duttar since Ashkhabad plays it too. This theme evokes the disappeared Silk Road... It is supposed to be played in maqam bayati, but sorry I disagree 'cos I hear no quarter tones...
playing but I'm just learning. I learned this song two weeks ago.

The song is called "Karsilama". Recorded it on a Zoom H4 using the internal
mics. No additional processing. Used a guitar pick. Tuning is D-A-D.
Well worth the watch. I believe that this man has gotten the best sound of the cumbus from anyone I've ever heard play. He really plays it well. Look at his instrument too, very old style, with the original headstock and half-inlayed fretboard. Really good playing. Mehmet is mainly an oud player but apparently (according to Eric Erderer's thesis) grew up playing the cumbus.

What do you reckon about the quality control on these instruments? I mean I know they are really really cheap and mass produced, but whats your opinion of how they come out? I have a newish cumbus, maybe 4 years old now. I've also played many of them, including old ones and really new ones. I've played a friends cumbus that he had bought in Istanbul in 1994 or so, and it's lighter and feels a lot less stable. Also the work is a bit rougher, liek the nut is unevenly cut, etc. But, it's a great sounding one.

Do you ever get defected instruments, bent necks or anything like that?

When I was in Istanbul at their shop, I was going through most of the ones they had in the store, and everynow and then you'd fine the cumbus tanbur that had the neck sort of mis-aligned, like the strings were not set in the centre, etc. But generally they were good.

Fellow Cumbus fans,

I understand that the Turkish Rom music, which is currently one of the "hot flavors" in the ME dance scene in North CA, is making use of the cumbus as a rhythm and sometimes melodic instrument. I have had a little experience with this, but would like to learn more. I'm teaching at a camp this week and another instructor is a Rom musician, so I'm hoping to learn something from him.

Do any of you play this style? and if so please let me know what is involved. Thanks!

Avarez Cumbus String Gauges

OK, so after all the talk about strings and tunings I thought I'd measure the Avarez stock Cumbus strings and let you know what they are. Then if you wish to use an alternate tuning you can have something concrete to go on.

The set, with a lovely picture of a mustache-wearing Zeynel Abidin, is marked in Turkish note names, so they are listed 1-6 as "Do Sol Re La Mi Re" or in correct order low to high, DEADGC, again in transposed Turkish note names.

The real pitches are ABEADG, and are as follows in gauge:

High G - .023mm or .009 plain

Second string D - .29mm or .011 plain

Third string A - .42mm or .016 wound

Fourth string E - .55mm or .022 wound

Fifth string B - .77mm or .030 wound

Low A - .87mm or .034 wound

That is it, measured on my digital micrometer. So if you want to tune to the oud pitch of C#F#BEAD, for instance, then the BEAD strings are the same, .030 to .011 respectively, so you would need to guess-timate that the missing low strings would be app. .038 for the F# and app. .042 for the low C#.

If you can't get real Cumbus string sets, then you can get banjo strings of the same size and make your own.

I hope this helps.

Question about the special wingnut that connects the cumbus neck to the pot. Every now and then when I feel like the action is getting too high on my cumbus, I grab a wrench and turn that wingnut to lower the action. But I'm worried maybe this has to be done in some special way to avoid damaging the neck or other parts. It's just like the truss rod on an electric guitar... I wouldn't want to attempt adjusting it myself, cause I Know Nothing, and only a 'certified guitar mechanic' should mess with it.

Or should I just go ahead & twist that thing & not worry?

I ordered them from Mid-East.. I tried

1. Their Plastic ones - Not bad but too big, didn't come to a point.
2. Cow Horn - Holy hard batman.. nice grip but wayyyyy to thick.. might be nice if they were sanded down to a point
3. "Turkish" - These are rubber... TERRIBLE for Cumbus.. maybe ok for oud...

So... I didn't like anyone's picks... I began to make my own picks out of the following
1. Star Bucks cards - These are free! Star bucks just has them sitting on the counter... you can cut diagnoally across them.
I recommend this for people who like harder picks.

2. Capital 1 Fake Credit Cards - You know those fake ones you get in the mail, that are actually made of plastic? I get one every week from Capital one. I've been using these for picks for months and they work great. I cut along the diagnoal...

BUT!!!!!

The best pick yet.. and what i'm using now for Oud and Cumbus......

Plastic Collar Stays!

Wha? Yes those things they put in shirts!
You can buy a pack of them for like $1 and it comes with tons of em. The looonger ones are perfect! they are harder than the fake credit cards, but thinner than star bucks cards...
And cheap! and already shaped like an oud pick!

We have seen Mr. Ederer's website regarding his thesis on the cumbus.
Today I recieved (and I think Carmine did too, I saw his email adress on the message)
the final copy of Eric's thesis. It is 187 pages long and covers absolutely EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about this instrument. Astonishing detail to the history, changes in construction and the musicians which play and don't play the instrument, and the reasons behind their selection of the instrument.

This is an unbelievably good read, and it is very informative. It is a PDF file, I will request his permission to upload it on here.

RAUL, you will love it, there is a picture in there of Mehmet Emin Bitmez (the oud player) and next to him is a man holding a cumbus with 14 tuners (7 course) and a cloth cover on the back. The dream instrument! My god I sound like a geek, we're talking like petrol heads and cars, but it's cumbus instead.

Carmine, check your email!
I've been hearing about Cumbus for some time now and due to much hinting, Santa brought me one for christmas. I opened the box and said to myself "holy mother of god what is this thing!" I build high quality modern 4 string jazz banjos, and I was a little put off by the giant wing nut stickin out neck thing, the salad bowl back, the formica fingerboard, and the rather strange looking bridge.
So I set it up and tuned it (Thanks to Carmine for tuning info!) and started to play it. Then I played it some more. And some more. Then I realized that the whole day had gone by and I was still playing it. When my wife came home I played it at her until she made me put it away. Today I played it some more.
What a fantastic instrument! I haven't had so much fun with a new instrument in years. I thought the lack of frets and position markers would be a problem, but it turns out I don't need 'em. What a unique sound! What a lot of exclamation points!
Anyway, consider me a convert.

I've been playing with my cumbus and effects pedals.. here are the results...

Boss RC-2 Loop Pedal
This is their new smaller looper pedal.. it's tons of fun to play with, and works great!

Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb
The cumbus has alot of built in reverb.. but I found this pedal adds a nice texture especially to the cheap clip on contact pickups that might be missing some of the instruments ambiance.

Boss DD-6 Digital Delay
Awesome fun. Works perfectly. I even used it as a poor man's looper before getting the RC-2

Boss CH-5 Chorus Ensemble
Prett much has zero affect on the cumbus. I can barely tell it's on.. even with the effect settings at maximum.

DOD FX-62 Bass Chorus Bedal
I had this from my youth, so I tried to hook it up. It actually does add some coloring of chorus (better than the boss). But still not enough effect really. The cumbus is chorusy enough on it's own :)

Digitech Bass Synth Wah
The jury is still out on this one. I can do some pretty weird stuff with the cumbus with it. But I need to play with the settings more.. i found it to be either too responsive, or not responsive enough or lots of feedback... i'll play with it more.. it's a fun toy (but not recommended at this time)

To find pedals.. DEFINATELY check craigslist.com and ebay.com.
I got alot of these for 2/3rds of the price. And in perfect working condition and with their knobs and alot with manuals...

Good luck!

Well, I went out that day and bought one at Lark....the problem is I am now back in St. Pete, Florida and can not find a teacher. Any advice??

Hi all,

My cumbus' papery head is being eroded by my right hand knuckles. As I still have no opportunities for travelling to Cumbus Shop in Istanbul, I have to preserve my instrument as long as possible. So I've decided that soon I'm going to purchase a pickguard adhesive sheet, cut an appropriate shape and stick it on the problematic zone, that is, on the head between the fist course and the word "ISTANBUL", which is written on the head rim. I'd prefer to get a black sheet.

And now the question is, could an adhesive sheet affect the instruments' resonance?.

By the way, yesterday I removed balls from some acoustic guitar strings and used a nail file to sand a couple of slots. After confirming that both the instrument and its sound aren't affected at all, I'm going to switch to acoustic guitar strings soon. It's very difficult to purchase a cumbus string set outside Spain at a reasonable price, so I think I have little choice. Also I'd like to taste a lower, oudish register. But I have to confess I like the thinner cumbus strings and the higher pitched sound they provide. Two cheap acoustic guitar string sets will be nice substitutes until I get a regular cumbus set.

Well, I hope to be lucky in all this.

Greetings,

I bought one from the Cumbus shop in Istanbul, don't know the name of the guy I dealt with. The shop was under construction, there was barely any inventory visible. The one I bought had frets sunk into the formica and was tuned like a guitar. When I returned home, I wasn't satisfied with the intonation or the tuning so I set out to customize it. My luthier replaced the formica with ebony, widened the neck, built a new bridge and calculated the correct intonation.

See photo here:

http://myspace-151.vo.llnwd.net/00650/15/11/650391151_l.jpg

This thing sounds sweet! I have it tuned to DADGAD which is the tuning Davey Graham invented to play guitar with oudists. With the standard cumbus strings set, I had to put the second course in the position of the first course and buy some new individual strings for the second course. I can't remember the guage off-hand. For the sixth course, I used one of the bass strings from the set and one of the 1st treble strings, tuned to an octave like a 12-string guitar. I play with an oud mizrap sometimes, but I frequently use a super-thick Wegen gypsy jazz pick. This tames the wild sounds a little and give me a very even tremolo similar to a mandolin.

I'm now thinking of getting a standard/fretless cumbus, but would love to find one of the nicer models with the inlaid neck or possibly the wooden bowl. Does anyone know how I can go about getting one without making the trip back to Turkey?
