Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sun, April 1, 2007 - 5:27 PMi'm so glad that my furkids aren't affected.
patrick, i like cities like north hollywood that are changing pet "ownership" to pet "guardianship", thereby stiffening penalties for abuse and abandonment. on our city shelter's petfinder database, i changed the wording to "... if not claimed by its guardian." and i avoid using the word "owner" or "owned". every little bit helps, eh? -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sat, April 7, 2007 - 10:13 AMThat's the truth.
'Guardian' I like that.
As long as I feed the furry lil' shits and change the litter, let them in and out and stroke their egos, they are easy to get along with.
I be responsible for my kitties, they're my friends and they act like they like me. Predators at heart, they'll snuggle up and purrrrr.
Each and every one makes a warm, furry spot in my heart and moves right in.
NOT PROPERTY, thank you, they are my friends!
I might be half drunk, but there's a cat helping me type this. And he's purrrrrrring to beat hell.
Property, General don't think so - I might be his property, but that's not on call here.

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sun, April 1, 2007 - 6:55 PMI'm a pet guardian when it comes to getting food, toys or paying for vet bills.
Otherwise, I'm nothing but a pet slave :)) -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Fri, April 6, 2007 - 8:18 PMI'm thinking some laws need to be changed, and that anyone that has bonded with a dog or cat would be in full support of considering our critters to be so much more than just "property". Anyone that understood that cats are family would know how painful it would be to lose one to this kind of fiasco. How sad! :o( Yep, I see "class action suit" in Menu's future. Hope they have good insurance . . . -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sat, April 7, 2007 - 8:02 AMLove the picture! It is often what I see first thing in the morning as one of my pack nag me to get up.
The sad fact is that the legal system deals with animals purely in terms of their commercial value, not in terms of time, money and emotions invested, though of course in the latter case any vermin could easily massively inflate their claims as such people are prone to doing.
Anyone who has had a cat killed by stray dogs has found this out the hard way. The courts consider a chicken more valuable than a cat, except in rare cases of pedigreed breed stock or show cats.
Just another way that consumerism and turning everything into a commodity undermines all ethical and moral considerations, even the legal system and so called justice. -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sat, April 7, 2007 - 10:35 AMYes, James,
But if you shoot the dog that is mauling your cat, you will be put in jail. I can understand the 'no firearms discahrged in city limits' law but getting sued by the dogs owner?
A friend of mine had this happen to him, the dog was a collie-mix, and he counter-sued the dogs onwer for 'invasion of privacy', 'malicious trespassing by way of neglect - letting a dog run un-restrained' and a couple of others I don't recall, and got the dogs 'owner' by the balls.
He paid $50 for 'illegal discharge of a firearm in the city limits'. The other cases are pending. I await the ruling.
The judge, Judge Hoying, might be a bastard, but he's a fair bastard. I trust the SOB. He's put me in jail several times and I deserved it. -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sat, April 7, 2007 - 3:33 PMSome times you have to take the fine for the shooting, especially if you are suing the owner and it will be for much higher amounts than the shooting fine.
The last dog that tried to maul a cat in my yard found out just how far he could fly when hit with a 6' long piece of pipe. The owner tried to get me charged with animal abuse but I made it clear to the deputy and the owner that they would both find themselves by the balls in court for a very long and expensive time.
By the way, you can sue for the cost of a new cat as well as all the shots and vet bills that are expected to cover the cat up to the age you lost it at, at least in many areas.
The smarter people are learning not to mess with me when it comes down to legal and ethical issues.
BTW, considering how you feel about your furfriends, have you considered not letting them outside unless you are with them? It might help you get out more often too. :-) -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 7:32 AMThey come and go as they please.
"DON'T FENCE ME IN!"
They are free spirits in their own right and Our Mother loves all of us.
I like my freedom.
Why should I restrict theirs.
You pays your money, and you takes your chances.
I wish one of my furbuds could play a guitar.
That would be neater than an fresh laid egg. -

Re: Pet owners likely to get little in suits from Menu Foods...
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 12:16 PMOh I know, I feel the same way overall, but I have a big house and my cats go out with me every day, often for most of the day when I work in my garden plots.
If you want to see something funny I will try to get a video of them following me in packs when I work in the garden. I weed, they pounce on anythng that moves but they stay close and don't wander off.
They are like children and don't have the same ability to look at things over time as we do and thus I feel it is our responsibility to protect them from what their instincts might get them into.
Besides, I like all animals and don't like having to whack the dogs that chase them.
By the way, speaking of cats and guitars, have you seen the works of B. Kliban, and the cats doing the "mousy" song? It's great.
