ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A cat that fled a house fire is back home in Albuquerque, N.M., after turning up some 240 miles away. The black & white cat named Miko disappeared in December, on the night of the fire.
About 2 weeks ago, Miko's owner got a call from an animal shelter in Pueblo, Colo., saying her cat was safe.
Officials at the shelter speculate that the cat, trying to keep warm, hopped a tractor-trailer & rode it to Colorado.
When they found her, her collar was missing. But shelter officials scanned the microchip in her neck & came up with her owner's name.

More than 160 feral cats and kittens have been rescued from the site of the London 2012 Olympics as demolition work continues at a pace.

A local animal charity has been allowed access to the site to ensure the safety of the cats that have taken refuge in the various industrial buildings that are being bulldozed.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said Friday that 168 animals had been discovered and were now in the care of the Celia Hammond Animal Trust.

The ODA, which has also re-housed newts, frogs and fish from the east London site, said demolition work was expected to be completed in March with construction on the main venues beginning later this year.

She came into this harsh cold world some time in August, 2000 ...we brought her into our world and our home in October of that same year. She was just a wee little "lady" with her stitches still in her little tummy. Husband person said she couldn't get on the furniture or the bed.. and he didn't like her, he said. That lasted all of a couple or three hours. LOL

A couple months after we brought her home, I had emergency surgery and the little Diva... Nurse Aneesa.. stood close watch over her "human momma" forever after. She was always my "little nurse" ...no matter what I suffered.

A couple of months ago, she stopped eating... stopped voiding.. stopped being a Diva. We took her to the vet, of course, but he didn't find anything conclusive... and he still drained my husband person, financially. She was on so many meds, I lost count. I had to force feed her several times a day... syringe pedialyte and water into her... and sing and cajol and beg and plead with her to allow this terrible, undignified treatment. I became Nurse Aminah to my own Diva Aneesa.

On December 7th, I found my baby girl in my closet. She was such a Diva.. to the very end.. she hated for me to see her so unkempt and feeling so ill. She left without saying goodbye to us, but it was her way. She will always be my Diva Aneesa.

Now, she's here with me in spirit everyday... I hear her "talking" or romping through the hallway ...I feel her presence in "her spot" on our bed. One of my pets has even learned to mimic her "sickness" sounds.. ironically, it's my gluttonous goldfish.. Miss Dorothy. Husband person laid her body just under her Pink Camelia, in our front yard... and I left the furry spot on the back of the love seat and the curtains, where she always sat and watched her birdies in that bush.

"I miss you, baby girl. There's more birdies than ever, these days!"

Hamilton County sheriff's deputies said two neighbors witnessed 37-year-old Robert Primmer set fire to a cat.
Witness Melissa Allie said she couldn't believe what was seeing, so she grabbed her camera to get some pictures of the injured cat.
Allie said it was her 14-year-old daughter who actually saw Primmer with the cat, but they both couldn't believe what happened next.
"All the sudden, this big shoot of fire came out of the burn barrel and just ran so fast towards their house," Allie said.
She said that she and her two children watched in horror as the burning cat darted around the Primmer's back yard.

I'd also like to divide up the donations so that sales in a city would support groups in that city.

Hello All,
Last night I found two kittens in my back yard tree. I would keep them but my four dogs want to snack on them. If you or anyone you know may want to adopt or even just foster these cats until I can find a suitable home I would appreciate any help.
They are 6 to 8 weeks old, a little skinny but eating dry food, a little dirty but cleaning up and have no fleas. The female is calico and the male white shorthair. They are very human friendly and like to be held, petted, and played with. They are a great pair and can amuse themselves playing together. The two have the loudest motors I’ve ever heard from small cats and you can hear them purring from across the room. Best of all, they are litter trained and have only used the box since coming inside.
Please pass on my information to anyone you know that may be able to offer assistance with placing these kittens. My cell phone is: 323-708-8095.
Thank you,
FDA Investigators Say Chinese Companies May Have Added Melamine to Appear to Boost Protein Content
By DAVID KERLEY and BRIAN HARTMAN

April 19, 2007 — - For the first time, investigators are saying the chemical that has sickened and killed pets in the United States may have been intentionally added to pet food ingredients by Chinese producers.

Food and Drug Administration investigators say the Chinese companies may have spiked products with the chemical melamine so that they would appear, in tests, to have more value as protein products.

Officials now suspect this possibility because a second ingredient from China, rice protein concentrate, has tested positive for melamine. So has corn gluten shipped to South Africa. That means there is a possibility for another round of recalls.

The FDA's top veterinarian, Stephen Sundlof, says finding melamine in so many products "would certainly lend credibility to the theory that it was maybe intentional."

Melamine, which is used to make plastics in the United States and as a fertilizer in Asia, contains nitrogen. Nitrogen can appear to boost the level of protein in products.

The revelations have led the FDA to expand the number of products it is testing as they enter the United States. So far, those inspections at the border have not turned up any melamine in wheat gluten. Tainted wheat gluten used by Menu Foods is suspected in sickening hundreds, if not thousands of pets.

Some of the tainted pet food has apparently made it into feed for hogs. Federal agencies are trying to determine if it was actually fed to animals and whether it may have reached the human food supply.
2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
1 Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions (any size

2 Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to
assemble.
3 Crumble sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping
often. Set aside all but 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food
coloring and mix.

4 When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl.
Toss with 1/2 of the remaining cookie crumbs, and the chilled pudding. You
not soggy.

5 Line kitty litter box with the kitty litter liner. Put cake mixture into
box.

6 Put half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat
until softened. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve
the tootsie rolls slightly. Bury tootsie rolls randomly in the cake and
sprinkle with half of the remaining cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a small amount of
the
green colored cookie crumbs lightly over the top.

7 Heat 3 or 4 of the tootsie rolls in the microwave until almost melted.
Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle lightly with some of the green
cookie crumbs. Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until pliable and shape as
before.
Spread all but one randomly over top of cake mixture. Sprinkle with any
remaining cookie crumbs. Hang the remaining tootsie roll over side of litter
box
and sprinkle with a few green cookie crumbs. Serve with the pooper scooper

From CNN http://tinyurl.com/29tcjt

Government testing found a chemical used to make plastics in recalled pet food linked to the deaths of dogs and cats, officials said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient.

Cornell University scientists also have found the chemical, also used as a fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating the company's wet food.

Menu Foods recalled 60 million containers of cat and dog food earlier this month after animals died of kidney failure after eating the Canadian company's products.

It is not clear how many pets may have been poisoned by the apparently contaminated food, although anecdotal reports suggest hundreds if not thousands have died. The FDA alone has received more than 8,000 complaints.

The new finding comes a week after scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified a rat poison and cancer drug called aminopterin as the likely culprit. They've since detected melamine as well, though it's not clear how that chemical would have poisoned pets.

Meanwhile, animal rights advocates called on federal food safety regulators and pet food companies to expand a nationwide recall of dog and cat food to include dry varieties, claiming they make pets sick.

The FDA said Thursday it had no plans to suggest a wider recall to pet food companies, and veterinarians said they have not seen a trend of animals becoming ill after eating dry pet food.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans to make the appeal Friday in Washington after it said it received complaints from pet owners who claim their animals suffered kidney failure after eating dry pet food.

Norfolk, Virginia-based PETA wants the FDA and the companies to extend the recall to foods that have received complaints, chemically test it and perform necropsies on the animals involved. It also wants companies prosecuted if the FDA's probe turns up wrongdoing.

FDA spokeswoman Julie Zawisza said she did not know how many of the complaints the agency has received have concerned dry pet food. Officials at Ontario, Canada-based Menu Foods, which made the recalled pet food, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Nearly 100 brands of pet food were recalled after animals suffered kidney failure. The recall involved "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall covered products carrying names of major brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

Veterinarians aren't seeing a trend of pets getting sick off dry food, said Paul Pion, founder of the Veterinarian Information Network. He said since so many people use dry food, you would expect to see many more ill pets if the food was tainted.

"I wouldn't put much credence in it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility," Pion said.

The Veterinary Information Network reported Tuesday that at least 471 cases of pet kidney failure have been reported since the recall, and more than 100 pets have died. (Full story) Menu Foods has confirmed 16 pet deaths.
Female, black domestic shorthair 13 yrs old. Very quiet and skittish - litter trained and no problems.
She is threatening to put the cat down if she cannot find a home for her. Nothing wrong with the cat - just doesn't get along with her dog of 3 years, and since she is moving to a smaller house, the cat has to go. She does not get along with the cat - doesn't like the cat so I feel it's maybe a good idea that a better home where the cat is loved is found.

I suggested a no-kill shelter which will be the last resort if I have anything to do with it.
But if you have room for a nice cat who doesn't cause any problems and sounds as though she is just real shy, and if you don't own a dog, please contact me here. I can help take care of arrangements etc.

Or if you can tell me of any no-kill shelters in Greater Seattle, pls post their names here so I can find one that's appropriate.

By Harriet Ryan, Court TVFri Jan 19, 5:07 PM ET

= NEW YORK (Court = TV) -

The dog carcasses always appeared late on Wednesday = nights, wrapped in black trash bags and stuffed in the Dumpster behind = the Piggly Wiggly supermarket.

Over a period of three weeks in the = summer of 2005, police officers in the small town of Ahoskie, N.C., = pulled the bodies of 80 animals from the trash bin. Some were puppies, = some were full-grown. Most were mutts.

On the fourth week, = officers set up a stakeout, and when a white van pulled up to the = dumpster, they pounced.

If the van's cargo — 10 dead dogs = and three dead cats in black bags — was to be expected, its = occupants were not. The driver and the passenger were employees of = People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the vehicle was = registered to the organization.

The workers, Adria Hinkle, 28, and = Andrew Cook, 25, were arrested and later indicted on 24 felony charges, = including 21 counts of animal cruelty, for injecting lethal doses of an = anesthetic into strays they had just collected from county shelters and = a veterinarian's office.

For PETA, the largest animal rights = organization in the world, it was a public relations nightmare. The = group, whose many celebrity supporters include Pamela Anderson and Alec = Baldwin, made its name by obtaining and publicizing disturbing images of = torturous lab experiments, blood-soaked fur farms and shocking abuse of = circus animals.

Now it was confronted with photos of a graphic = scene of its own employees' making: a lifeless cream-colored puppy being = lifted out off a pile of trash. A dead Dalmatian sprawled on its back. A = jet-black cat and her two kittens cinched in a trash bag.

"It's = hideous," the president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, acknowledged two days = after the arrests. "I think this is so shocking it's bound to hurt our = work."

Despite this assessment, Newkirk and PETA stood by Hinkle = and Cook in the coming months, consistently advocating for their = innocence and hiring the legal team that will represent them at the = trial that begins Jan. 22 in Hertford County Superior Court.

"As = the trial is about to start, we remind all interested parties that there = was absolutely no cruelty involved in this case, that PETA has only ever = helped animals in dire straits in North Carolina, and that if justice is = served these facts will be made clear," a spokeswoman, Erin Edwards, = wrote in an e-mail Thursday.

Although only Hinkle and Cook, two = low-level staffers, are facing charges, the policies of the entire = organization are on trial.

Critics have charged that many of the = group's loyal supporters will be shocked when details of PETA's = euthanasia policy emerge. The Virginian-Pilot reported that the group = euthanized more than 6,000 animals between 2001 and 2003, about 83 = percent of those it collected.

Officials with the group maintain = that while Hinkle and Cook may have exercised poor discretion in dumping = the animals behind the supermarket, they and other employees who did = similar work were acting humanely when they euthanized animals removed = from shelters.

Those who say otherwise, PETA claims, are not = realistic about the future of the estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats = left at U.S. shelters annually.

Statistics compiled by the = national Humane Society indicate that only about half of the strays will = be adopted. The rest will be put to death. PETA insists that in the case = of the "unadoptable" — the old, sick, antisocial or not = housebroken — it is more compassionate to euthanize them = immediately than to let them live in shelters, where they may be = mistreated.

"Critics may condemn PETA for supporting euthanasia, = but we are not ashamed of providing a merciful exit from an uncaring = world to broken beings," Daphna Nachminovitch, PETA's director of = domestic animal issues, wrote in an editorial in the San Francisco = Chronicle shortly after the arrests.

That stance is controversial = in the animal rights community.

"The responsibility we have to = animals doesn't mean giving them a painless death. It means coping with = their challenges like we would a family member or a child," said Rich = Avanzino, the president of Maddie's Fund.

His organization, = endowed with $300 million by PeopleSoft founder David Duffield, = advocates making the United States a "no-kill nation," where animals are = only euthanized if they are dangerous or suffering from an incurable = condition.

The trial, which is scheduled to last a week, will = focus on PETA's involvement with three rural counties in the northeast = part of the state.

According to PETA, the group first became = involved with North Carolina strays several years ago when they received = a phone call from a police officer outraged at the conditions in county = shelters.

"Some of the counties were euthanizing animals by = shooting them in the head with an old rifle. Others were using a leaky = and ineffective gas chamber," Cook's lawyer, Mark Edwards, = said.

PETA agreed to collect animals several times a week and take = them to their headquarters in Norfolk, Va., about 50 miles away. What = was supposed to occur there is disputed. County officials say they were = under the impression that the group would try to find loving homes for = the animals.

One veterinarian, Patrick Proctor, said that when he = handed the black cat and her kittens to Hinkle and Cook, they cooed over = the animals and said they would be easy to place.

"They were = saying, 'My, what beautiful animals. We will have absolutely no trouble = finding homes for these,'" the veterinarian told CNN.

PETA = officials contend that everyone involved knew that the animals would be = euthanized, and its role was to provide a less painful death at their = lab in Norfolk than they would have experienced by a gun or gas chamber = death in the shelter.

"These animals were going to be euthanized, = either by PETA or the state of North Carolina," Edwards = said.

Newkirk has said that Hinkle and Cook deviated from PETA = policy by disposing of the bodies in the Dumpster rather than cremating = them.

Hinkle, who was more senior than Cook, normally assigned to = the group's Web site, was suspended for 90 days, but both defendants = continue to work for the group.

Fri Dec 29, 8:07 AM ET

An alert tabby cat saved an Australian family of four from a house fire by clawing at its owner's face, emergency officials said Friday.

Timmy the tabby sprang into action by waking his unidentified owner when a mattress caught fire as the family slept early Friday in Cairns in Australia's tropical north.

"The cat was probably the best smoke alarm system ... it was clawing at the occupant's face and got him up and out of bed," Cairns fire service spokesman Robert White-Macfarlane told reporters.

The man was then able to wake his family and call for help.

White-Macfarlane said the fire was probably started by a cigarette but added that the home had suffered only minor damage because of the cat's intervention.

But I am getting a bit concerned now. Our 11.5 year old Churchill is due to have his teeth cleaned again tomorrow. This is the third time in 6 years. Is that too much? He eats 95% dry food, that supposedly helps with tartar prevention and therefore, gum problems and he also gets a lot of treats, specifically for tartar control. And yet, 3 weeks ago we went for his annual check-up and we were told he needed cleaning again.

Now I don't mind. If it has to be done, it's no question. I'm just wondering about the frequency. How fast does tartar build up? Can it be more frequently because of his older age? Or is it just him? Is there anything else I can do, to make these visits more infrequent? I'm worried that he has to be anesthetized yet again, and surely that's not a good thing for a 11.5 year old.

What are your experiences with teeth cleaning (your cat's, of course :-) ) ?

The National Zoo was briefly shut down Friday after a clouded leopard was discovered missing from a wire-mesh enclosure, and the animal was found snoozing just outside the exhibit 30 minutes later.

Mook, a 5-year-old, 24-pound female, apparently escaped overnight, zoo spokesman John Gibbons said.

Zookeepers realized she was missing shortly after 7 a.m. and alerted other staffers, he said. Joggers and other early morning visitors were escorted off zoo property, while others were ushered into a building for safety.

Gibbons said one of the keepers found Mook sleeping just outside the exhibit on the new Asia Trail. She was anesthetized with a tranquilizer gun shortly after 7:30 a.m. and returned to captivity.

"Everything went according to plan," Gibbons said. "Fortunately, we train for this kind of thing."

According to the Web site of the Clouded Leopard Project, a conservation group, the animals are medium-sized wild cats with cloud-like spots and are a separate species from regular leopards. They are listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.

He sleeps under the covers right next to me with his head on my arm. He is very affectionate, I know he knows my moods, and if I am crying will get on my lap and meow and touch my face.

Anyway, he came in the other night and my daughter said "Look mom, Chuck has something hanging out of his butt!" it looked like a piece of sting. I tried to pull on it but it was "wedged tight" It was late and Sunday night but a call to the vet, they said "you had better bring him in" so I put my coat on over my jammies and we took Chuck in. Ok they explained that his intestines keep moving and so if it is a piece of sting and is bound up it might cut his insides and cause partinitus and then he would die. So if it is a piece of string and does not pass normally he will have to be operated on. They took an x ray and then explained that you would not be able to see the string but might be able to see if there is a block of stool in his intestines. No that looked pretty normal, So I had to leave him over night, by the time I was out of the vet I was crying and when I got home I broke down and bawled. Before I left the vet said to call at 9:00 AM and she would know if they would have to operated.

I get to work at 6:00 AM and am working frantically thinking about what if I loose this cat who is my baby, my bed friend, my comforter. So at 9:00 I went over to the other building called the vet a few times, the phone is busy, finally I got through. The vet came on the phone "Oh didn't you get the message? I left a message for you at home." The thing hanging out of Chucks butt was a 6 inch piece of grass. When I went to pick him up they had the grass nicely wrapped in a piece of gauze and in a bio hazard bag for me to take home. I thought about framing it, cause it would have been the most expensive piece of art work in my home. Glad he is ok!!! Had me worried.

By the way, I would like to make a small suggestion and reminder....

Cats love to climb christmas trees, whether real or artificial.

They often get hurt when it falls over and it breaks ornaments and can even cause fires.

So with that in mind, I would like to suggest the following idea:

SECURE THAT TREE! :-)

It is actually pretty simple to do. A pair of small screw in eyelets placed at 90 degree angles from each other or more will go a long way towards making it almost impossible to knock of the tree. Then you run wire or strong cord from the eyelets to the tree about a foot down from the top where it starts to get thicker and stronger and you will have a much more stable tree.

If you do not have walls that work well with regular eyelets such as dry wall, they do sell them which have little spring loaded wings on the back that can go into the wall and flip open to spread the force out. And they have ones that work well in brick or concrete too.

So no matter where you put your tree, there are ways to make it much safer for you and your furballs.

At this time of year it is often tough to find what you want or feel good about giving. Many of us prefer to give gifts that do some good in the world and I would like to offer a suggestion.

The link and search box below will place orders through amazon.com and will let you find most things that you are interested in, including products and sponsorships directly in support of The Realms of Legend, such as our sponsor a tree program.

The Realms of Legend is the project to build a historical and environmental education facility in the style of a themed entertainment venue which will showcase concepts for simpler living, eco friendly living and solutions for many of the problems our society faces in the coming year, all in a format of fun and engaging experiences.

Ordering via the search box at the link below will give the project a small commission and help us pursue the goal of educating a large number of people about the options we have for building a more healthy and sustainable future for all.

If you are looking for a gift that you can be sure will get there on time and allow the recipient to choose what suits them best you might consider one of the gift certificates. The E-Card form is instant and you don't have to waste paper or wait for postal services or you can choose a more traditional hard copy version.

So if you are considering giving some form of gifts during the holiday season or even in the future, please consider using the search box below. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

I hope you all have a very fulfilling holiday season.
She was going down Highway # Whatever after getting off Highway # Whatever and there were a bunch of cows in the road. Underneath the lead cow was this tiny lil' kitten running underneath, between the cow's feet. The cows were doing the bovine trot down the middle of the road like they owned it and this kitten was scampering to stay underneath the lead cow. "Oh my gawd! Gotta keep up with my milk supply!"
There I was 3/4 asleep listening to Rebecky go on. Woke me up! I couldn't go back to sleep from having the giggles picturing this.
She told me it was a little little bittly kitten and she said it was "Just running to beat hell right under the milkebag". I can imagine the lil' thing getting hit by one of the teats! (On a cow, they're teats, on a human, they're nipples)
One Eye on the Road and One on the Litter Box
By WILLIAM GRIMES
IT is a good idea, when traveling, to choose one’s fellow passengers carefully. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. When I set out for six weeks in south-central Kentucky recently, hauling a trailer full of furniture, my wife, Nancy, as always, sat in the front seat, wrestling with several maps. But in the back seat were two new faces — furry, wide-eyed, and expressing, very vocally, even more anxiety than the couple up front. Soda and Sweetzie, our two cats (who had no place else to go for the six weeks), were warming up for a performance that would last 1,500 miles, round trip, and set new standards for misery in travel.

Day 1

11:30 A.M. Soda and Sweetzie are installed in back seat of Honda Civic, stuffed into separate carriers because they cannot abide each other. Both mew piteously. I position a clean oversize litter box in back window of car, which has never seemed so small. We roll forth from Astoria toward the Queensboro Bridge

11:45 A.M. Mewing has just started to abate when a sudden stop causes litter box to lurch forward and dump an avalanche of grit on both cats. Soda, a sweet-natured and dainty creature, lets out a howl of cosmic protest. Sweetzie, a huge tortoiseshell cat of smoldering intensity, volatile moods and tangled neuroses, produces a demonic sound new to us. Careful preparation for trip, involving administration of Rescue Remedy (New Age tranquilizing drops) and Benadryl smushed into bits of raw steak, has not produced the desired behavior modification.

12:30 P.M. A rising aroma makes it clear that Sweetzie, like many soldiers experiencing incoming artillery fire for the first time, has had an extreme fear reaction to the sounds of the tunnel or, perhaps, the litter shower.

1 P.M. I pull into the first available McDonald’s parking lot, grab a stack of napkins and try to clean out Sweetzie’s carrier. It is a big job. The deeper I reach into the carrier, the more Sweetzie feels cornered. She mounts a slashing attack, leaving bloody stripes up and down my arm, then does an imitation of Linda Blair’s voice in “The Exorcist.” Lingering fragrance suggests more work needs to be done.

2:15 P.M. Incessant cries of the damned cause me to open the cat carriers. Soda moves into new, improvised litter box on floor (baking pan acquired at dollar store along the road), and takes a jubilant dust bath. Sweetzie finds her way to a fleece cat bed on floor behind front passenger seat and hunkers down, eyes glowing with an insane luminescence. Peace descends.

6:23 P.M. We pull into a pet-friendly motel in Hagerstown, Md. Research on several Internet sites yielded a number of these oases dotted across the country. A surcharge of $10 over the standard room rate gets us all in. Soda, an enthusiastic eater, reacts ecstatically to bento box that I arrange on a tray, with frilled paper caps from the motel’s water glasses as decorative dishes. (Hair on back stands up.) Sweetzie dives under a bed and remains motionless for the next 12 hours. Any food offered causes her to recoil and unsheathe claws. I sleep restlessly, unable to envision a blood-free scenario for putting her back in the carrier, although I have now refreshed it with a bottle of Evian and innumerable paper towels.

Day 2

8 A.M. Nancy pushes food tray at Sweetzie, causing her to flee from under bed and into my arms. Seemingly broken in spirit, she allows her limp form to be poured into the carrier. Soda, stupefied by high-calorie cat treats, also submits passively.

9:15 A.M. Both cats, released from carriers, return to their places on the floor and settle quietly, convincing me that I have discovered the secret to problem-free feline travel. This is a rash conclusion.

3:10 P.M. Arrive at destination. Civic cannot pull trailer up steep driveway. Cats remain calm, even as smell of burning tires and sound of cursing driver fills car interior. I carry both cats up driveway, arrive gasping for breath. Realize that both cats badly need to lose weight.

Return Trip, Day 1

11:30 A.M. Confident that all concerned are now old hands, I put cats in back seat, place litter box on floor and prepare for a serene, scenic drive back to New York. Soda settles into litter box. Sweetzie takes up position on fleece bed. A few peeps, then silence.

7:15 P.M. Check into different pet-friendly motel in Hagerstown. This one has a working television and a receptionist who does not hide in the back room talking on his cellphone to friends as guests crowd the front desk. Things look good.

7:30 P.M. Sweetzie dismayed by platform beds, which afford no hiding place. Soda thrilled at king-size format, ideal for lounging.

7:35 P.M. Sweetzie missing.

7:45 P.M. Sweetzie found, wedged into a two-inch crack between bed headboard and wall.

Return Trip, Day 2

3:15 A.M. Sweetzie, perhaps disturbed by employee slipping bill under door, begins yowling and pacing the room restlessly. She rejects food, water and neck massages. I roll up towels and put them against the bottom of the door to block sound and light. Sweetzie tears furiously at towels, pushes nose under door and lets loose at louder volume. No telling how tattooed guest with pit bull in next room might take this.

4:30 A.M. We leave motel in haste.

5 A.M. Sweetzie, nerves shattered, prowls the car, looking for an exit. Briefly takes up residence on brake pedal, then tries to press herself forward against the windshield, cutting off my view of highway. Ungodly wailing and lamentation. Cats also upset.

6:43 A.M. Sweetzie realizes that Soda has stolen her spot on the cat bed. More prowling and yowling. Soda is unmoved. Their mutual loathing adds to tense atmosphere in car.

7 A.M. After brief, eerie silence, we slip in a book on tape: Alan Furst’s “Foreign Correspondent.” Something about Alfred Molina’s voice sets Sweetzie off. We turn up the volume. Sweetzie responds in kind. As she claws her way past my left shoulder, I briefly consider lowering the window and giving her a nudge onto the highway.

8:30 A.M. Soda, responding to Sweetzie’s mood, begins prowling the car. She is easily bought off with five or six Deli Slices, a new-fangled calorie-bomb cat treat that appears to be as addictive as crack cocaine.

10:15 A.M. Arrive home. Return cats to their accustomed environment. Reward Soda with a Deli Slice. Cut off diplomatic relations with Sweetzie. Make inquiries. Does U-Haul rent a pet trailer? If not, all future vacations off.
