To The Earth is hosting Bastet from Albuquerque, NM to come teach a DOUBLE fan workshop on July 20th! We'd love for you all to join us.

Here's a message from Bastet (Profile: people.tribe.net/05d47da8-...4057a31c):

"Hello all,
As part of the workshop, I am offering a pre-order for fans. Due to my insanely busy schedule this summer, I can only hold pre-orders until May 18th, though I will order extras (don't worry!). The instructions are posted below and on my tribe: Bastet Fusion Fan Dancing. Just in case you're wondering what my double fan technique looks like, here's a video....enjoy! www.youtube.com/watch

For your dancing delight, I've found many options for you to choose from to order through me:

$20/pair (Right Handed ONLY)
-----Black-Staved Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...14be6d22e1
-----Dragon and/or Phoenix Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...075cc8857f
$20/pair (Left and Right Handed Fans)
----Fade Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...db52950fe9
$15/pair (Right Hand ONLY)
----Red or Black Dance Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...c3de1269ca
$12/pair (Left and Right Handed Fans)
----Green Peacock: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...09af94ee34
----Blue Peacock: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...379ab53f3b
----Red Dance Fans: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...3f9c748564

*I offer these options because I know I can save you money on them by buying (and shipping) in bulk and either own or have used all of these and found them to be acceptable or good for the price. However, my current favorite fans (and the ones you see in many of my pictures) are from waydragon.stores.yahoo.net/soli...html. I just called them, and they only have orange and green in stock right now. Unfortunately, I cannot save you any money by buying in bulk (at least, through my estimation). So, if you're interested, buy directly from them! There are also many vendors on ebay (though I think you'll pay about the same or more with shipping).

How to Order: Please send a paypal payment for the total to eve6570@hotmail.com with the name of the fan and color preference. I will be taking pre-orders until May 18th to guarantee color/style preferences. I will order extras of fans I feel will sell at the workshops. ONLY order fans if you are attending the Richmond VA workshop as you will receive them at the workshop. If fewer than 5 orders are made from any one vendor (I am ordering from several companies), I reserve the right to cancel those orders--you will be notified if this happens and your money refunded or used as a credit towards another pair of fans.

**If you cannot afford a set of fans and are attending my workshop, I will have a limited number of fans available to borrow. Please pm or e-mail me at bastetfusion@gmail.com to reserve a pair to borrow.

***If you're still reading at this point....here's my opinion on some of these fans: The loudest fans are the "Black-Staved Fans" and the "Dragon and/or Phoenix Fans", the easiest to handle are the ones from waydragon.com (the ones you'd have to order), but any of the left and right handed fans have a wonderful ease of use, the most graceful ones are probably the "red dance fans," but the fade fans look the best on stage. If you're buying your own, please don't buy the metal martial arts fans. I have some. They are heavy, beautiful, and dangerous. If you fling them across the room by accident, you could seriously hurt someone. Also, they heavy enough that you could injure your wrist doing some of the movements that will be taught. Also, if you own fan veils, please don't use them for this workshop. Many of the movements you will learn MUST be modified in order to use fan veils. The movements and combos you will learn really focus on using the fan as a fan. Fan veils are, in my opinion, very different props.

Whew!
Bastet"

In my practice, i cultivate awareness and focus; i can design a program specially for you which is intense or gentle, taking your individual needs into account. We can work on healing, fitness, or both! Group classes are wonderful, but they lack individual focus. One-on-one settings allow for much greater growth of the relationship between student and guide, and so a greater growth of one's practice.

I have several years of teaching experience, and i am currently in the process of becoming official by training with Shiva Rea's Samudra Global School of Living Yoga, one of the most rigorous of the Yoga Alliance registered programs.

Classes are offered on a sliding scale based on income - we will work together to decide on an appropriate cost. The minimum cost is $20/hour.

I am available in Charlottesville to work with you in your home all day on Fridays and until 2 PM on Mondays. Please contact me soon as my schedule fills quickly.

Guest Editorial
Dancer Mother

by Alexandra

Alexandra is Level 2 certified in Suhaila’s format. You can read more about Alexandra at her website, www.bellysouk.com.

I am a dancer. I have studied dance since the age of six, and I have taught and performed belly dance professionally for the last six years. I accept my identity as a dancer without questioning it. I always knew I would have children, and I assumed that I could do both. My first pregnancy was uneventful until I began to have contractions in my seventh month. At the advice of my midwife, I slowed down, stopped teaching and performing, and waited for my body to finish growing this new baby. During the time that I had to put my dancing on hold, I had a chance to reevaluate where I was with my own progress. Was I training hard enough? Did I focus more on my students than on myself? I resolved to make some changes after the baby was born.

I resumed teaching and performing when my son was two months old. Looking back, I could have taken more time to adjust to my new role as a mother. Emotionally, however, I needed to hold on to my identity as an independent woman. Dance was the one part of my life in which I felt in control. I began to work on more challenging choreographies, and I started to devote a small amount of time to my own dance each week, in addition to the time I spent developing lesson plans and teaching.

I attended my first Level I Workshop with Suhaila Salimpour when my son was eight months old. Between the physical intensity, the mental shift, and the more practical demands such as finding a quiet space in which to pump and store milk for my baby, I came home completely confused about my identity. I had to rethink my entire approach to dance and my place in it. On one hand, the detail and technique of Suhaila’s format appealed to me. On the other hand, I felt a sense of lost time - that I could have accomplished so much more had I met Suhaila earlier in my belly dance training.

I began to integrate dance with my life as a mother. I listened to new music while I played with my son and choreographed new dances while breastfeeding him. I began performing regularly at a local Mediterranean restaurant. Eventually I trekked out to the Mothership and took a weeklong with Suhaila, where I certified at Level II. My most significant changes, however, were emotional. When my son was born, I began to have a visceral response to certain music, dance, and art. I began to experience a more profound connection between music and my interpretation of it. I actually began to cry during one of my most emotional performances.

My second pregnancy was much harder than my first. I ended up on partial bed rest for a month, and then full bed rest for two months. Not only was I confined to bed all day long, I couldn’t dance, choreograph, play with my toddler, cook meals, or even fold laundry. I had to let go completely, and allow my husband, my wonderful mother, and our nanny to take over. My substitute teachers taught all my dance classes. I felt like I lost my entire identity during those two months. I made no contribution to my family, to my dance program, or to society.

My daughter’s birth provided a cathartic ending to a stressful pregnancy. She was born at home after a private, intense four-hour labor. I had the awe-inspiring experience of pulling her out myself, up onto my chest. I birthed my own baby! At home! I felt like I could conquer the world. For the next 48 hours, I was exhilarated.

Then, postpartum depression gradually settled in. I felt tugged in every direction. My children needed my attention constantly. My husband, who had worked full-time while taking care of me and our son, needed a break. My body was out of shape and I was uninspired by my music and lesson plans. I barely had enough energy to teach my classes. Gradually I became overwhelmed and felt that I needed to escape. I felt guilty. I wanted to stay at home and raise my children, but I also wanted to train harder in dance, and to push past the plateau that I had been stuck in. With the quotidian demands of family life, I was lucky if I trained one hour a week. There was no time for me. I wanted to accomplish so much, but what was the point in trying if I never progressed?

Eventually I lowered my expectations. I learned my limits. I accepted that who I am right now is perfect for me. I have less time to devote to dance, so I work more efficiently. I focus on quality rather than quantity. I have grown dramatically as a dancer during this difficult time, when I have little time and energy to devote to the art form. I use affirmations each day. I stretch and use my foam roller when I have the time, and I don’t beat myself up when I’m too busy. I accept that I teach and perform for myself, not for the gratitude of my students or my audience. When I choreograph a piece, I take time to truly connect with the music. Through all these changes, I now experience a strong emotional release during a performance, just as when I work through a conflict in my morning pages, or when my chiropractor adjusts me. I have learned to take care of myself first, before I can be a good mother, wife, teacher, friend. I give myself permission to take time for myself.

My split identity as a dancer and a mother provides a balance of opposing forces. Motherhood has become my first priority, but my performance is enriched by motherhood. I once considered quitting dance temporarily in a moment of frustration, but when I envisioned my life without dance, it seemed empty and false. Motherhood alone does not fulfill me. Raising a child is the hardest yet most rewarding job I have ever done, but I feel certain that I was born to raise my kids, to guide and teach them to become independent and creative adults, just as I am certain that I was born to dance.

And now, living a chaotic and full life, I have started to notice other dancers with the same focus. How many professional belly dancers choose to have a family after their career is established? Very few. Many dancers feel that they must choose between a career in dance and motherhood. In my life, I find that the two roles enhance each other. I am drawn to dancers with life experience, with a full emotional range. That develops with time, experience, and unfortunately, hardship. It takes a mature, complex woman to do justice to the emotional landscape of belly dance and motherhood.

My life is still unpredictable, but I love it. I take pride in my body, with all its glorious stretch marks, because I know what it is capable of. I can birth a baby. I can do double time pelvic locks. I can dance Dark Veil, Suhaila’s new hard rock belly dance fusion choreography! My kids are young only for a short time, but I have the rest of my life to learn to vibrate. So I’ll work on the Level III material in between taking the kids to the park and making dinner, and eventually I’ll get there.

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a little friendly competition as we read about how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without your support.

Arms and Hands:
Beautiful arms and hands are at your fingertips!
Chandani’s unique practice techniques teach you to layer, frame
and accent body movements while adding graceful arms to your dance.

Zills:
Aradia will teach the different zill patterns for Oriental
and Folkloric dance, technique for tuning your zills,
and getting different sounds from them, then a short
choreography will be taught incorporating zills into the dance.

Stage Dynamics for the Multi-level Troupe:
Utilize and incorporate the different experience levels and skill
sets of all members of a troupe & student troupe for stage performances. Simple and effective techniques for creating layers of breathtaking eye candy for your audience! While based in Tribal Improv theory, Britt teaches how these techniques can be useful for
troupes of any genre.

Sword Dancing:
Learn how to dance with a sword or scimitar! Chandani’s workshop teaches the history and traditions of sword dancing, tricks of the trade, balancing, stances and transitions. Participants need to bring in their own sword or scimitar.

Traveling Steps:
Learn to glide across the stage with ease, as Aradia teaches many of the beautiful traveling steps from the Lebanese style of dance. Fun and sassy layers will be added, as well as entrances and exits to get you on and off the stage to a Malfouf rhythm.

I want to say thank you for giving us all the chance to continue to study with Suhaila, and for providing the C'ville area with excellent belly dance education on a week-to-week basis. I can tell you we're not so lucky in other parts of the country.

It was great to see all of you who took the workshop and spend some time back in the old stomping grounds, and for those of you who haven't heard yet, it was a life-changing weekend for me in more ways than one--I got engaged on Sunday night!

So thank you, again, Alex, for your wonderful guidance and hard work in making this weekend and every other Belly Souk event happen. I echo the sentiments of everyone at the workshop when I say we are grateful.

If you are a beginner, show up promptly at 4:00 PM and we will allow some time for the more experienced to share their knowledge and encouragement. If you are an accomplished drummer and have percussion instruments to share, please bring them! Although we believe that sharing the energy of dancing and drumming is in itself a spiritual experience, this is NOT a religious ritual.
This is a great group of people putting on a fundraiser to raise money for breast cancer awareness. For me, every woman on my father's side of the family has had this disease, and I run a really good chance of getting it. I've had a couple of scares out there, but luckily it was just fibrocystic disease and not cancer, but every single mammogram is a nail biter for me, and I always have to go and have a sonogram afterwards because they think they see something.

People need to be aware of this and checking constantly for signs of it. I have a cousin who hadn't been to a gynocologist in 30 years, she started getting strange cramps, so she finally went and saw someone, and she had cancer to an extreme, she lived for 6 more months, and those were filled with surgeries and chemo and radiation... She was completely unaware of the need to see a gyno yearly, she lived deep in the heart of the Appalachian mountains and it was just something they didn't talk about. Yes, I'm showing my heritage here.. LOL....

But don't let this happen to anyone you know, least of all to you... lets all do our part to support the fight against cancer... I for one want to be a dancing queen well into my eighties, with a braid down my back, and a shimmy that makes people smile!!

Hi all!

I posted an event the other day about the Hula workshop that I'm hosting at McGuffey studio 11. It's Saturday at 10 until noon and Sunday at 9 until 11. More details can be found under "events" here on CVL raqs.

Anyway, I thought that maybe if someone was feeling "on the fence" about trying this out, I'd let you know a little more about it here, in hopes that I might get you to give it a try.

I teach Tahitian dancing. If you've seen it, you know that a lot of it is very fast. Hula uses the same muscle groups, but it's much more bellydance-like in my mind. It isolates much more, can be much slower movements, and the gracing of the hands is a major element to the dance. It's also a VERY good workout for your legs and rear end!

This workshop is definitely geared for the person new to the art form - all newbies are graciously welcome! The teacher Celena is very good and experienced, and has taught all levels of dancer. She's bringing her entire troupe (4 or 5 dancers) to help her teach these workshops, so there will be lots of good examples to learn from. Not only that, but you get to take home materials; song translations, music and other handouts.

I hope you can make this. It's really going to be a good one. Please let me know if you have any questions other about it!

I stopped for a variety of reasons and am now interested in starting up again. I want to know if there is enough interest to do this at my yoga school, which would allow for a much larger, empty room than at my house. I do both SCA and modern raqs. The purpose is to share and grow as a community. There would be no formal instruction, but in the past folks have been great about helping beginners.

They are willing to let us use the space on Sundays 3-5PM for a $5 a head optional donation. There is no alcohol allowed, but snacks may be had in the lobby/waiting room. The main class room is carpeted and plenty large enough. There are toilets and a small space to change clothes in.

This would be at Healthy Life Yoga on Rt 60 in the Sycamore Square shopping center zipcode 23113. This location is a little more than an hour from Charlottesville.

The main advantage to this location is the size of the room, it's a quiet shopping center, lots of parking. However, you can't have a cookout afterwards as you can at my place.

The session is 6 weeks long, ending just before my Spring Bellydance Showcase at Gravity April 12th (hint hint, nudge nudge). It costs $30 for members and $75 for non-members. Don't forget to come an hour early if you want to take the multi-level Bellydance class as a warmup.

See you there!

Greetings! The UVa Bellydance club is taking part in Dance Marathon, a 24 hour dance party at the Satellite Ballroom this weekend to raise money for the UVa Children's Hospital. We have a goal of raising $100 for the event, but we'd love to help out with as much as we can! Would you consider sponsoring us and donating just a few dollars to a great cause?

When I sent this request to members of my department, I got a reply from a friend:

"As a chaplain for the UVa Health System, primarily serving in the Children's Hospital, I am deeply committed to the care that the hospital is able to provide for the children and families who come here. Believe me, social areas for families to gather are desperately needed. And research grants and nurse education scholarships will benefit the hospital tremendously. I am thrilled that y'all are considering this fundraiser."

You can donate online at: http://www.firstgiving.com/bellydancingclub08 We'll be performing sometime late on Friday night!

Thanks for all your help.

This Saturday night, the 16th, is our monthly Jalsah! We'll drum and dance and perhaps get another group of lively melody musicians in the house! The last event was really great! We had some awesome folks from Richmond come and Raq the house! The music was amazing and we had all styles of dance representing in the house! We'll be in "Ourspace" again, which is beneath the teahouse on the downtown mall. This thing will go from 8-11, so stop in. Its not really formal, no special clothes, just bring yourself and your friends and enjoy the vibe! Stop upstairs and have a tea!
Its supposed to be nice Saturday, so head on out to the downtown mall!

If you are having a belated valentine date, stop in for a few, the atmosphere is perfect!

Again, this Saturday, February 16th! 8pm! Beneath the teahouse on the downtown mall! We suggest a $5 donation for C.A.R.D., which we'd love to tell you all about! But if you can't, no big deal, still come on out and share... Its a community space and all are welcome!

If you have drums or instruments, please bring them, this is an open jam! Zills and spoons welcome too!

About Issam Houshan

The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan does exactly that. Call him the “Wassan Pharaoun,” “King of the Drum,” or “Mr. Magic Fingers” and you only tell the half of it. His connection to the dancer is the essence of his magic, a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art. An international music star, his past credits include touring with Sting in 2000, performing at the Grammys on the hit single Desert Rose, as well as performing and recording with countless Arab stars. In addition, he has toured with the Mile Copeland-produced Bellydance Superstars, the world’s premiere professional touring bellydancer performance group since 2003, with whom he has appeared in over 1000 shows in 16 countries over the past three years.

A highly accomplished percussionist on assorted Arab hand drums, Issam was formally trained at the Damascus Academy of Music and is the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. An accomplished and sought-after music instructor, he taught at the Damascus Music Institute for nine years and continues to teach workshops and private lessons around the world. Unequaled in his field, Issam is known by fellow Syrian musicians as the Wassan Pharaoun (Pharaoh of Rhythm) and his al assaben al Sahriha (magic fingers) are currently insured for 10 million dollars (1 million each).

His drum solos with the Bellydance Superstars are major features of each show, as captured in the films American Bellydancer, Solos from Monte Carlo, Bellydance Superstars, 30 Days to Vegas, Behind the Shimmy, and the instructional DVD The Art of the Drum Solo. His CD releases include his own Wassan Pharaoun, The Dancing Drum and Tabel Ya Issam, as well as percussion on the Galactic Caravan albums.

I'm new here, just moved to Cville from Minneapolis, MN. I was with a troupe there for a year and a half and am looking forward to exploring the MED circles here and meeting new friends. Can't wait to be dancing again!

I am really sorry for the late notice, but if anyone is free tonight, please join us at the Islamic Study Center (106 10th St NW, Charlottesville, VA) for a night of beautiful Middle Eastern music, drumming, and story-telling! There will be refreshments, friendly faces, lots of music and fun, and it's FREE! Hope to see you there!
