We are a small group of family and friends whom have been working magically speaking for a number of years and have wanted to do our own Beltaine, and now we are. We would love to have others join us and meet more of our community at large. This is a traditional Beltaine with dancing the may pole, a May Queen and May King- with all the trappings and cavorting that entails! As this is a new festival we need more musicians, drummers, dancers, fire eaters, contortionists, and anyone else whom wants to join. This is also "family" oriented where children may come (with a parent/ guardian), but the celebration at the Main Fire, Bardic Circle and Tantric Temple can go on through the night! We welcome all faith/ religious backgrounds, gender assignations, sexual orientations and any other category you may identify with, so long as you are respectful of others. Questions? Interested?

Hey all! In case any of you are going to be coming to Pagan Pride from far away (as some are), I took the liberty of making a google map with all the local hotels listed.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=hotels+near+4690+Sw+Watson+Ave+Beaverton+OR&ie=UTF8&ll=45.485758,-122.806292&spn=0.013118,0.027637&z=15&om=1

The Green arrow is where the Masonic Lodge is located at 4690 SW Watson Blvd., with all the hotels pointed out around it. Also, when you come, I will have a map in the program with all the local eateries and points of interest. The Beaverton's Farmers Market will be going on Saturday from 8:30 - 1:30 pm less than 2 blocks away (we have a GREAT farmer's market in Beaverton), so parking WILL BE LIMITED. There will be street parking available, but you may have to search for it. There is a small public parking lot at 1st and Angel. You can see it on the map if you look at the satellite imagery. So, because of the limited parking, I HIGHLY recommend carpooling or public transportation. You can take the MAX to the Beaverton Transit center and then take either the #76 or the #78 bus to the Lodge. Both comes right to us.

I also wanted to apologize for the lack of updating on the website ( http://www.portlandpaganpride.org ) . We've been having some troubles, but everything should be fixed soon. The main things to be aware of is on Friday night, Sept 7th, OPENING RITUAL is at 7:30, with Belly Dancing and Drumming to follow until 11 pm. And Saturday activities, including workshops and demo rituals, start at 10 am.

If anyone has any questions about anything, or would like to volunteer in any capacity, please contact me, Mama Gaea, at 503-626-7078, or email g.a.e.a.project@earthlink.net

Thank you everyone, for your support, and I really look forward to seeing everyone there!
Right now, I have a question for all of you. A friend suggested that perhaps we could include a cakewalk in the festivities. Cakewalk? Wow, I haven't done one of those since elementary school. But cake and ice cream sure do go together.

So, my request is, if we did include a cakewalk, would anyone be willing to donate a cake for the cause?

Please respond. I would highly appreciate it. We will only include the cakewalk if we can get help with the cakes. And the money raised would help us immensely.

Chinook Jargon (Chinuk Wawa) in Portland tonight May 24th

the following is a Portland Indy Meida announcement

(added note I would say Chinuk wawa was spokan west of the Rockies .. not just west of the Cascades)

Morgan Millar's and Portland Indy's announcement:

May 24th 2007 forum/speaker
Time 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Title Chinuk-wawa
Portland, OR
Location 3120 N Williams Avenue
Speaker Morgan Miller
Topic / Issue Other
Sponsor The Waypost
Morgan Miller presents: "Chinuk-wawa"

Synopsis:
The language of chinuk-wawa is a local, cross racial language which was spoken by most folks on the western side of the Cascades back in the 1800s - early 1900s. It's a mixture of tribal, french and english words, with words and structure of its own. It is comprised of perhaps 700-800 words and is fairly easy to learn and get by in. As one becomes fluent, chinuk becomes more and more poetic as new words are developed as combinations of older ones.
There are many local terms one might see around the Northwest which are chinuk, and there are efforts in "cascadian" circles to revive the language as a local street language.

I remember that day well it was a Sunday (morning) and I was in high school and my mother woke me to say "She has finally erupted". I quickly went to the backyard and saw a huge nuclear bomb-like plume surrounded by lightning. That event is carved in my mind .. sublime ... the beauty and the destruction wrapped into one. As Robert Oppenheimer watched the first nuclear test remembered the quote about Lord Shiva from the Bagavad Gita: "Now I am become death, the destroyer of Worlds." As a teenager deeply into Goddess literature, Hinduism, Shamanism and Asatru and other worldviews I looked at Loowit thinking of the Goddess Kali with a garland of severed heads and a skirt of dismembered limbs dancing on the "corpse" of Shiva. From destruction comes creation for from fire consuming wood comes ashes and from flood water comes new fertile soil.

This event is now part of Cascadian mythology as much as Bigfoot, Japanese paper balloon bombs, DB Cooper, the CCC and every Coyote and Raven story. This is where the border-realms of real and imagination transcends you and I the individual and move us into a collective realm of being.

It will be light and lively fun for all ages. All welcome, a small donation appreciated, but not required, to help defray costs. R.S.V.P. to VIIFIRSGROVE@gmail.com for directions and so we can have an idea about how many people are going to attend. Weather clause: Sunny = Hooray, if showers, we are Portlanders and can handle it, if it is pouring down rain that is just plain unfun so we will call it off.

I've change the tribe name to Portland Pagan Pride, and we have also changed the website to reflect that as well. Our new website, which is up now (barebones, but it is there) is http://www.portlandpaganpride.org

Also, due to some major deals that can be made, we will most likely be having the Portland Pagan Pride celebration in Beaverton. It's still Portland Metro, and it is on a major bus line right from the MAX. It's just that we can get the Beaverton Masonic Temple for the WHOLE WEEKEND for super cheap! So, we feel we should jump on that. 2 floors, really beautiful, plenty of parking, nearby parks and there is a small lawn space outside. So, since we do provide Pagan Pride for the entire Metro area, I am hoping no one minds that we place it on the west side.

More updates as they arrive.
DHARMA ENGINE
http://www.dharmaengine.com

Dharma Engine is a Portland Oregon based Psychedelic Rock band. They were formed originally in 1996 and played many packed gigs until they split in 1998. There was no personal reasons for splitting except the usual day-to-day life stuff. Last month 3 of the original members got together to explore the "lost" recordings and realized that their music was too fun to play to just let it go away! They decided to reform the band and found that they were the only remaining members still living in Portland. They have added some of Portland's top musicians to fill the empty seats to bring back Portland's original Jam/Psychedelic band!

Conyers Toes Party Line: No Impeachment
Something Is Extremely 'Rotten In The State Of Denmark'

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Friday, November 10, 2006

The latest Democrat "saviour" to flip flop 180 degrees in light of
their victory is Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich. Presumed to become
chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in January, Conyers today
said that impeachment of President Bush "is off the table."

"In this campaign, there was an orchestrated right-wing effort to
distort my position on impeachment, " Conyers said in a statement
released by his Judiciary Committee spokesman. "The incoming speaker
(Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.) has said that impeachment is off the
table. I am in total agreement with her on this issue: Impeachment
is off the table."

Conyers seems to have forgotten that last December he laid out the
grounds for impeachment in a 350 page long report called "The
Constitution in Crisis: The Downing Street Minutes and Deception,
Manipulation, Torture, Retribution and Cover-ups in the Iraq War"
and later updated to add "illegal domestic surveillance. "

For a while Conyers was the darling of left leaning bloggers and
readers everywhere:

At this site, we are especially proud of the new Conyers
Report, "The Constitution in Crisis." By purchasing this book, you
have the opportunity to own a part of history and help the
Congressman hold the Bush Administration accountable. Your
assistance in helping Congressman Conyers become the next Chairman
of the House Judiciary Committee will bring us one step closer to
getting the American people the answers from this Administration
that they deserve.
- www.afterdowningstr eet.org

Conyers is so admirable. One of the very few in Congress who still
has integrity and principles. It is too bad that he does not get
more MSM coverage but why would they do that? He might upset the
Republican and Corporate plans for total control and could expose
their nefarious doings.
He is risking much by not following the official DNC program too, in
addition to challenging the Bushies.
- Huffington Post

In december 2005, upon release of the report, Conyers stated:

The Report concludes that a number of these actions amount to prima
facie evidence (evidence sufficiently strong to presume the
allegations are true) that federal criminal laws have been violated.
Legal violations span from false statements to Congress to
whistleblower laws... The Report also concludes that these charges
clearly rise to the level of impeachable conduct... In response to
the Report, I have already taken a number of actions. First, I have
introduced a resolution (H. Res. 635) creating a Select Committee
with subpoena authority to investigate the misconduct of the Bush
Administration with regard to the Iraq war and report on possible
impeachable offenses.

So Conyers was already underway with setting up investigations into
impeachable offences, but now he says that impeachment is off the
table? Clearly he has been given orders to toe the party line or
face the consequences.

Despite the fact that 86% want to see the President impeached,
leading Democrats have already ruled this out. The same leading
Democrats that voted for the war in Afghanistan, for the Patriot
Act, for Homeland Security and against a bill that simply condemned
torture of prisoners in Iraq.

After Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean, Conyers is the latest Democrat
to show us their true colours once in power.

Conyers and the other Democrats highlight precisely why we need to
regroup, consolidate and redouble our efforts in light of the
theatrical shift of power in Washington to the left. Because as soon
as this happened, overnight, the truth movement lost a great deal of
support from those that believe the job is now done.

Taking note of many reader comments over the past few days I have
noticed a startling uprise in the amount of negative and dismissive
feedback from some readers. Evidently those who expected us to be
out dancing in the streets at the news of a Democrat landslide in
Washington have been bitterly disappointed.

We have never once suggested that the solution to a corrupt and
fascist Neocon leadership is a passive and capitulating Democrat
sideshow leadership, so why is it any surprise that we are
continuing on the same course as before?

Comments such as the following emphasize my point:

"You can only have it one way. What the hell is up with you people.
The whole time the Bush regime was in power you begged for change.
Now you have it, but your still complaining. "

Yes we are seeking change, but not a simple change of personnel as
we have witnessed this week. As we reported yesterday "There's no
doubt about it, to see frothing Neo-Cons who have been strutting
around like John Wayne for the past five years finally eat humble
pie is a breath of fresh air, but let's not be so deluded as to
think that the Neo-Con agenda, which took decades to craft, was
simply brushed aside by the victory of a party that has supported
Bush every step of the way on major issues."

Seeing Bush on TV admitting he'd took a hell of a beating was great,
for about five minutes, then he started laughing and joking about it
and talking about pushing forward to work closely with a new crowd.

Is rolling over and going back to sleep going to get Bush impeached?
Should we shut down the websites now and go save the whales or
something else we'd all love to be doing if we didn't have to
relentlessly keep fighting to stop our leaders killing our freedoms?

Within hours the Democratic elite have shown us that they don't give
a damn about holding the Bush administration up to scrutiny. With no
effective opposition in the form of a political party it is up to
the people to continue to demand justice and to continue to attempt
to reign in those who have heinously abused their power.

Thomas Jefferson described Congress as "a body to which the people
send one hundred and fifty lawyers, whose trade it is to question
everything and yield nothing."

In light of this how can any representative say something like
impeachment is 'off the table?'
Howard Dean Says No Impeachment Of Bush
Lapdog Democrats to waste two years on minimum wage and mass illegal amnesty, no to Iraq inquiry, no to police state rollback, no to bringing troops home

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Thursday, November 9, 2006

Howard Dean last night said there would be no impeachment proceedings against President Bush under a Democrat controlled Congress, echoing the pledge of Nancy Pelosi to protect the administration that lied a nation into a war and dismantled the very fabric of America.

Here's the exchange from Dean's appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night.

STEWART: "How long in your mind do you feel it's gonna be before power corrupts you absolutely?"

DEAN: "Well, you know...."

STEWART: "The last guys did it in three and a half days, what are you guys aiming for?"

DEAN: "Longer than that."

DEAN: "I know half the audience wants us to impeach the President and all that kind of stuff but we're not gonna do that - we're not gonna do that."

Dean is toeing the party line first crystallized by Nancy Pelosi when she told the 60 Minutes program, "Impeachment is off the table....it's a pledge....it is a waste of time."

When will jubilant mindless liberals realize that their darling Democrats have been installed as ringers to halt the momentum of the anti-war and 9/11 truth movements while committing to shielding the Bush administration for the very crimes and misdemeanors that supposedly cost them the House and Senate in the first place?

Democrats have already clearly stated how they intend to "get to work" over the next two years - by helping Bush push through a mass amnesty for illegal aliens - something his own republican House even prevented him doing - and also wasting time on the non-issue of the minimum wage.

Will raising the minimum wage and legalizing all illegal aliens help rollback the devastation the Bush administration has wrought on the U.S. Constitution?

Will raising the minimum wage and legalizing all illegal aliens bring the troops home?

Will raising the minimum wage and legalizing all illegal aliens re-instate the nine amendments to the Constitution that were abolished under the Military Commissions Act?

Will raising the minimum wage and legalizing all illegal aliens do anything to can the unconstitutional domestic eavesdropping program?

Will raising the minimum wage and legalizing all illegal aliens do anything to claw back the out of control deficit?

We were told the Republicans were abandoned because of corruption and Iraq and yet the Democrat shills have completely avoided specifics about how they intend to address these issues and on the question of impeachment have vowed to protect Bush. Empty rhetoric about a "policy change" in Iraq is nothing more than hot air betrayed by a legacy of Democrat support for keeping the troops in the quagmire - exemplified no better than Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, who both support imperial jaunts in the name of the "war on terror."

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has already stated that Blair's government will not co-operate with any move to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and she needn't worry because the Democrats are not going to even try it.

The Associated Press reports that Pelosi and Bush have already proclaimed reconciliation and are now "making nice" and devising how they can work in tandem. Tuesday's vote and its superficial euphoric aftermath was not about a populist reaction to six years of abuse and deceit - it was a sad indictment of the fact that a majority of Americans, particularly the establishment left, still buy the hoax that the Republicrats and the Democons are anything more than two different CEO's bidding for control of Slavery Incorporated.

As always, the vendors, volunteers and presenters did a great job representing our community.

We did have two vendors who left did so because of illness, which is kind of unavoidable.

We did have some scheduling problems, particularly with the Bellydance schedule, which was supposed to be at 4pm (with the CommUNITY ritual at 2pm) but we were unable to resolve it due to prior engagements from the Belly Dance Troupe.

I would like to apologize to Lyceum of Trees for hosing up their ritual schedule.

The second is my big ~announcement~

Earllier this year, my family and I decided that this year would be our last year as the coordinators for Portland Pagan Pride. Our son, Maxwell is growing older and it is time for us to spend the summer months in nature and leave the good work of planning Portland Pagan Pride to others.
I have spoken to the former LC, Christina Taft (Mama Gaea) and she has agreed to take over under the banner of GAEA Project. I have already announced my resignation to national and given my reccomendation that Christina be the next LC. As soon as her application is approved, I will be changing over ownership on all lists, as well as giving ownership of the www.pdxpaganpride.org website, along with our vendor lists, presenter lists and information regarding venues.

Since Pagan Pride has opened up the date range to now be from August 12 and October 22, you should have much more flexibility on where you hold the event.

Blessings,

For those of you who were treated to pizza at last year's Portland
I'm booking gigs for MWW's Summer & Fall Yard Concert series. All funds raised are used to make the MWW 2007 better than MWW 2006. Those who donate their talents & music will get a free 1 day pass too MWW & be entered in the Bardic competition that will be held at MWW 2007. Music needs to be acoustic as we don't have a sound system at the venue (VII Firs Grove) unless you have your own amps, mics etc... I'm mainly looking for Folk, Blues, Bluegrass, & Celtic musicians but can be any style of music. If not a Pagan must at least be Pagan friendly.

I am a long time pagan, meditator, shaman shape shifter and energetic healer. I share my knowledge of meditation, energy work, Chakras, grounding, tantra, breath work and Reiki. I am a good listener and for the past 30+ years have done what I can to assist others on their chosen path in this life.

From about 1996 to 2003 I created and participated in a 7 year meditation intensive. Working only when I needed to I spent on average 10 to 15 hours each day (30,000 + hours total) in silent meditation. At the end of this time I fasted for 7 days drinking only water and not speaking. With out a doubt this was the most profound experience of my life so far.

I so not consider myself to be special in any way. I do not like titles as I feel they create separation where none should exist and frankly create more trouble than they are worth.

I choose to live a simple life that is close to our earth mother and the beauty she creates each day.
This is a major issue to me as I have many Pagan friends who served this country not only because they love it but because they also were following their deep rooted belief in the Pagan Warrior spiritual way and the VA is literally spitting on them & our President is sending out a clear message that Pagans who serve their country under his command bravely are not worth that recognition in his eyes since they aren't real citizens cause only God Fearing Americans count.

Scavenger Hunt: I need people to write "clues" for the scavenger hunt. Last year we based off of animals associated with gods, but this year the theme is up for grabs. (needs to be done by Aug. 22 so that we can print up the flyers and clues) Here is one similar to last year:

"I’m sleek, sly and sacred to Bast, I guard hearth and home, I’m a black________"

Drum Circle: Anyone want to lead this? Basically, you show up with your drum and start the drum circle.

Unity Ritual: Who is interested in helping with this ritual?

What I’m thinking is the basic NeoPagan outline(the (?) Sections are ones that I’m not sure about, please correct me if I’m wrong): 4 quarters/guardians/watchtowers, casting circle(?), Quiet moment to meditate, God/Goddess male/female honoring(?), raising energy by honoring our own part in community, cakes/ale, thanking quarters, un-casting circle(?).

There will be a basket full of rolled up ritual "parts." that people will pull just before the ritual. These "parts" will say stuff like "call west/air" and a brief description of the attributes of air for the person to refer to, as well as a standard line for people who are new like "I call upon the guardians of the air..." I will also have a taped out "compass" on the floor to help with directions ;-). OR if we get enough people, we can just set out parts in advance. I’m pretty open on this one, so if you are interested, please contact me offlist at malacat@gmail.com

Front Desk: We always need people to run the front desk/greeter position. This year we will also be selling water (I think) so you will need to be comfortable dealing with cash.

Security: Basically we just need people who are aware of what’s going on. We don’t expect you to "take anybody down" but it doesn’t hurt if you look like you could. Also, there may be a menacing T-shirt in it for you.

Community Altar: This year we will have a community altar! We need people to come up with cool ideas and decorations!

Ok, that's it for now ;-)

An issue has been brought up to me regarding the queer ritual offlist. Basically, there is some concern that the queer ritual, if not overtly at least implied, exclusionary as it potentially implies that people who are "not queer" would not be welcome at such a ritual. After listening to this person's concerns, I find that I cannot really fault their logic, especially since I have told women's groups that if they wanted to present a ritual, it would need to be open to everyone.

Since a "ritual" carries different connotations than the "discussion" we had last year, I am concerned that by holding a queer ritual we may, in fact, be marginalizing those people who are not queer. If we didn't do a queer ritual, we could easily replace with an "I am" ritual (which would be loosely based on the Pagan Unity Campaign http://www.paganunitycampaign.org/ that started a few years ago). Basically, this ritual would be people going around the circle affirming what they are i.e. "I am a teacher." "I am a lesbian." "I am a mom" type of statements (whatever they wanted to say) followed by the group stating that they are pagan.

Since Pagan Pride is about community, I don't feel comfortable just making the decision to keep it in or remove it without input from others in the community. I would really like to hear what you have to say on this subject, because it's something that has been kind of weighing on me a bit. If you don't feel comfortable posting a response on the list, please e-mail me at malacat@gmail.com

As for the Queer ritual, I am starting to see this ritual evolve more into an affirmation of our Unity, where we honor all of our diverse aspects. I'm also fine with eliminating "queer" and putting in GLBTQ if we keep it on that focus.

First, I want to thank everyone for their input regarding this matter. Sometimes it is really difficult to "see outside your own box" which is why is so incredibly important for me to get input from the rest of you in the community.

Last year, we had a "sex and spirituality" discussion, which I think was good as well as inclusive, however I have come to the conclusion, based on the writings and discussion both on yahoo groups and on tribe.net (gods, I wish there was some way to link them) and in person, that a ritual focused solely on a certain sexuality does, at least appear exclusive and is not in the keeping with the Pagan Pride philosophy. I also believe that a 'discussion' on LBGTQ issues would still be appropriate, as it would allow a roundtable of ideas and views to occur.

However, this year there won't be any discussions as we are attempting to both move the format away from a "convention" format (i.e. Magickal Winter Weekend) and a "bazaar" format (i.e. Pagan Faire) to more of a one day festival event.

Now, the flip side of this argument is that general Pagan rituals are, in fact, geared towards straight people because the majority of people writing and performing them are straight, particularly when dealing with the male/female archetype of the God and Goddess. This can lead to people who are not straight (and already feel left out by the mainstream) feeling disenfranchised or unacknowledged within Paganism. I think this is correct as well.

So, what I would like to do is create a ritual that is welcoming to EVERYONE, where we can all celebrate our unique gifts, talents, and knowledge to the Portland Pagan community, a celebration that the very fact that we *are* so different from one another and yet can come together, hold hands and worship together unites us.

So, a unity ritual it is.

Now, I'm currently in the basic planning stages of planning for 2007 and IF we can actually turn a profit this year (or at least not hemorrhage money like last year), we may be able to use a city park (which runs at least $1,600 for park, + porta-potties @ $500 + insurance @ $500 ) which would give us infinitely more space that the indoor venues we are currently using, this topic could be up for discussion again.

Again, thank you everyone for your input on this matter.

well, June is upon us and it's time to start gearing up for Pagan Pride again!

So far I have one confirmed presenter, the Belly Dancers from last year and possibly the Asatru group from last year. I'm also planning on inviting Reclaiming back, since all feedback regarding them was excellent. Having put out the call for musicians, I've decided that the cost of having musicians is just too great for Pagan Pride (I totally understand that they need to make money, but we just don't have it to offer).

We are doing well with vendors, and with 24 slots open this year, it should be hopping! Per last year, we are giving free tables to groups for community benefit (maximum 4)

Last year was a mix of presentations, rituals & performance and I think this year I would like to make it exclusively rituals, a showcase of our different traditions.

Last year we had for rituals & performance:
Druid Ritual, Asatru Ritual, Reclaiming Ritual & Children's Ritual, Heather Alexander, Gypsy Circle Belly Dance

For presentations we had:
Grey School of Wizardry and Queer Spirituality

Heather Alexander is already booked somewhere else, so she's out for this year and the Bellydancing was a big hit, so we really want to keep them.

I wouldn't mind doing a ritual on Queer Spirituality (yes, that's right, I have my own <i>Gay Agenda</i>), but I'm not wedded to the idea if there is no community support.

Gyelle, would Lyceum of Trees be interested in doing either the craft table or a kids ritual again this year? Since SAHFF has come on the scene (disclaimer: this is my group but I'm trying not to show too much nepotism here), they can take either one or the other if Lyceum doesn't want to do both (or either). However, Lyceum was there first so they get first dibs ;-)

Sarah, you had mentioned you wanted to do the Queer Spirituality talk again this year, would you still be interested if it was converted to a ritual?

So, anyone have any thoughts on whom else we should invite for this year?

2. Village Ballroom. We went by this venue on Saturday and it's *perfect* for our purposes, except that it is totally not ADA accessable. I've queried the Pagan Pride Western Region list on the subject. This venue would run us approx $1,100.00

3. World Forestry Center. We could either do the same venue we did last year, or get the bigger hall (Miller Hall). Either way, we are looking at running about $2,000.00.

Some people have brought up having it an outdoor event, and I think if we got permission from National to hold it earlier, that would be cool.
