I will let you know if I start one another somewhere. Bookman's was extremely hospitable and wonderful to work for. The choice was mine. Thank you so much for your support.

I just recieved a message from one of my friends asking me what happened to the groove in Wednesday's Cyrcle. He was right. There was not much of a groove and it had a lot to do with my energy. Below was my reply...

I'm sorry I dropped the ball last night. I find it right at impossible to hide my emotions because they run so deep. Last night I died. I will keep you posted about next month. Don't want to talk about it.....sorry.
Peace,

Hi everyone! All of the dvd instructional recomendations were great, so I thought I'd ask your opinions on a drum too. I'm looking for a good doumbek, but one that's affordable. It has to be good for constant traveling, and in all climates, indoor an out. An all around good drum. Any recomendations? Oh, I have to be able to buy it online too. No local resources here. Thanks so much! Hugs, Amazon

I'd like to post a link to my new tribe in case anyone wants to link up with other musicians in Az:

http://tribes.tribe.net/am?_click_path=Application%5Btribe%5D.Tribe%5Bf4edf4fa-e14d-4a27-8c1d-3ec987bff266%5D

I'm a bit short on members at the moment, but I'll be inviting people from other tribes as well (mostly guitarists and bassists, but also other musicians). I hope to get some creativity flowing. There are a lot of talented people in Az, especially in the central highlands (and of coarse the Phx area).

Souhail Kaspar and Rachid Halihal in Phoenix March 31st/April 1st

Mark your calendars!

Master percussionist Souhail Kaspar will be back in the Phoenix area at the end of March (which, incidentally, is also the beginning of April) for more percussion workshops and a rhythm and movement workshop for dancers. Also, Moroccan musician extraordinaire Rachid Halihal will be offering ensemble music workshops, which include voice and instrumental lessons, so bring your ouds, neys, violins, drums, and beautiful voices!

After the workshops, there will be a kickass concert and hafla featuring some of our favorite local dancers and maybe a guest appearance by our once-local violinist Bruno Bruzzese, and of course some of the best live music imaginable. Anyone who attended Rachid’s house concert last November can tell you what a blast it was!

More details to come….

Hey everyone, I'm coming back to Az really soon (like, in a couple days if I can get motivated to pack :P), and was wondering when drum circles get together?? I seem to remember something that went down Tuesdays in Mesa??....It's been a while and my memory is fuzzy.
Anyways, I'll be staying in Apache Junction. If anyone is getting together not TOO far from where I am (I'm not the biggest fan of driving), I would love to meet people and spin fire and jam out!
Peace and blessings,
Lynnea

Guys and ladies.. I'm up and ready to do a couple of gigs at any of the Ren Faires, esp. the BIG one! So, if any troupes want to round out with a dancer, or drummers want an extra drummer, please let me know. I haven't been able to do any faires here in AZ, the timing was always off.. this year, now that I'm not so sick anymore, I want to try new venues. I DOD dance at a closed SCA event a couple of summers ago, wow!!! the drummers were incredible. this is my favorite style to dance to..
I play darn good basic rhythm, any rhythm, once I hear it. Have drummed in many drumming circles, and can thank Night Wolf Clan in Tucson for helping me to practice in a group.

When I started dancing, my very first public performance was at a Traveler show. Dancing to the live music was exhilarating and interacting with the audience was amazing!! It was dancing for the pure love of dancing. I had loved the dance for years but it was there that I fell in love with performing.

Part of my New Year's goals was to surround myself with positive energy and peaceful people. In line with that goal, I have an idea. What do you all think about setting up someting monthly - or at least quarterly - where we could get together and perform. Everyone ... no matter what style or experience level ... to live drums (wink wink drummer boys and girls) or to recorded music ... someplace "safe" and happy ... to support and encourage one another and to bond as performers.

I know I sound all hippie peace-lovin flower child-esque but ... well ... that's me LOL!

What do you think?

Dear fellow drummers and dancers,
Is there any interest in a weekly or monthly drum circle on the west side (west Phoenix or Glendale)? I have been approached by someone who would like to have one to go to. I am willing to start one if there is enough interest, say 5 - 10 people or more. Some of the things we would be doing would be layering, free style, Middle Eastern rhythms, some African rhythms, trance and dirge. Dancers of any kind and Hoopers and other performers are welcome .... the interaction is wonderfully rewarding.

The only way this will happen for you is if you get off your apathetic butts and respond to this post shortly. I will wait a week or so to hear from you and then I will move on to something else. I love you all and I'm motivated on this.

Peace,
~Dave Frankus - aka edric aziz

I'm looking for a dancer that would be willing to do street performances with me on Mill Ave. for tips. Must be willing to play from 6-11 pm. By myself I usually bank about 20-60$ But I'm sure with a dancer drawing attention tips would be extensive. I drum you dance we split 50/50 any takers?

What in the world has happened to Edric? Is he spelunking? Climbing Mount Everest? Running against Jon Kyle in November? Helping his friend Dave find more instruments to take pictures with (or behind)? Working on the latest carpentry project with the Baron? Shopping for fur-lined handcuffs? Writing the next great American novel? Buried deep in his recording studio producing the next triple-platinum CD? Writing the final goddamn book of the Harry Potter series so we don't have to wait anymore? Having lunch with Hossam Ramsy? Re-inventing the wave theory of light? Re-building the Devonshire castle for next year, this time with ten turrets and a functional moat? Has he taken up pottery so he can make his own signature-series drum capable of crushing skulls with the most resounding doum imaginable? Is he building a summer mansion on Alcatraz island? Sailing the Pacific in a full-sized replica viking longboat? Freeing Tibet? Where the hell is he?!
MECDA Kick-Off Event Needs Help!

Hello all,

We have had organizational difficulties in getting our MECDA chapter started and are in need of much help to get things rolling. We had committed to a November 3rd Dance Show/Fashion Show but now find ourselves without the participation of two of our four officers to help steer this event.

We NEED lots of immediate help to keep this commitment to the local dance community and make our chapter a reality beyond its existence on MECDA Central's paperwork. We understand that everyone's lives are very busy but even a small amount of volunteering can help this go forward.

The event is Friday November 3rd 7:30 pm at Layali Restaurant - see my Tribe page for full details.

We do have some performers booked already but we may have room for more both -cabaret and tribal styles

We need:
Publicity Help
Vendors
Vendor Coordinator
Models for costume fashions
Helpers to dress the models and do makeup
Someone to run sound
An Emcee
Ticket takers
A large tent for models and performers to dress in ( there is not sufficient space inside the restaurant for that many people to prep)

Hello everyone,

first I apologize for such a off topic post, but I want to invite you all. see below

what's this all about you say?

Here it is, I've kept quiet for some time... a second project I've been working with for the last several months. I would like to extend an invitation to a breakout debut / party for "DEAD OR ALIVE: The Bonjovi Experience". This is an ultimate tribute to Bon Jovi and our debut is September 30th at Alice Cooper's Town (downtown Phoenix) @ 8PM (show starting approx. 9PM).. This is being released to the press and radio this week and we've taken the time to make it look, feel and sound right. If your interested in attending, email me a message and I'll put you on my guest list :) I'll just need your full name, and any of your friends or significant others names and the cover charge will be waived :) The producer is allowing me to do this only once, so come down, have a drink, enjoy the sights, listen to the music and show your support!

Remember to email me with your info otherwise you'll be charged a cover :(

You can check us out here -> http://www.myspace.com/deadoraliveband

Thanks!

Should be fun. It's at the Mesa Senior Center near University and Macdonald. "The last minute is the best minute."

The drumm in my life

It would like to share with all here a little on the influence and importance of the percussion in mine life. When I age child, for return of mine 4 years of age, my mother had some problems of health, doctors did not obtain to discover what he was and nothing they made to help it, my father tried of all forms to find some solution or somebody that could help, but nothing he advanced. A certain, a couple of friends of my parents had day been in house in visiting them, of this visit, after much colloquy this couple invited my parents to go in a section in a center of umbanda. Thus my mother if initiated, started to improve and starts to frequentar this center regularly. In my first time, I was a little nervous, anxious, common thing in the children, when the section it started, that the tambores (atabaques) had started to touch felt an emotion so strong as if had gained a toy new, the emotion, the joy was incredible that that was causing me, I was very happy and moved with this new experience!

The percussion, the sound of the tambores, I believe, I must of some form modify my cardiac beating, my chemistry corporal, but independent of this, to incorporate the percussion, to live deeply the touch of the drum stops me is to bring the life a new perception of the world and the people. The touch of the drum, the conscience of touch of the drum, gave a new perception to me of rhythm, of time, in any situation in my life. I feel that the percussion helped me to develop the patience and the calm, when I have the chance to touch tambores with friends I feel well, I am happy, is as if everything left there that leaves me sad, everything what it bothers me and in this way it renewed my energies and hopes. The percussion beyond all these benefits, helped me to make new friends, to open new horizons, to enrich my culture and knowledge.

When I decided to start to touch, never I was worried very about technique, always oriented myself for the sound, exactly because in Brazil it is one in such a way difficult here to find professors of Arab or African percussion, then I had to basically guide me for the sound. With the Internet the things if had become more easy, easiness of research, to find rhythms and notations techniques. I have conscience of that I am and I will always be in initiation process, I have much despite to learn e I want to always learn, therefore to touch for me is a way to express me, to say to all how much I am happy, of that it is possible to be happy, with a so simple thing. Touching tambores, the percussion changed my life, for better and is very happy therefore!
Peace and best thing for all!!

Arizona has a MECDA chapter!

If you haven't already heard... Arizona now has it's very own MECDA chapter - and our very first webpage:
http://www.geocities.com/lady_brianna_the_oblivious/AZ-MECDA.htm
Musicians this includes you!!!!

This chapter is a local branch of the Middle Eastern Culture and Dance Association based in California which hosts Cairo Carnivale and many other events. There are MECDA chapters all over the U.S. and now we have one too! There will be an informational meeting in July for anyone interested in finding out more about this group and what it can mean for the Arizona ME music and dance community - if we all pitch in. Stay tuned to Tribe -the meeting details will be set soon and posted here.

We'd like to have a "more creative" name than AZ MECDA so there is a naming contest going on as well - hit the webpage to enter your sugesstions. The winner will ultimately be decided by member vote at the information meeting to be held in July.

The first major event - our kick-off, will be held in October. We encourage you all to get involved and help make AZ MECDA chapter something that is fun, educational and in celebration of our diverse, statewide Middle Eastern music and dance community here in AZ.

If you are already a MECDA member you can request to be affiliated with the AZ chapter.

Any of the interim officers can be contacted for more information. We can be reached through the AZ MECDA webpage.

We are looking forward to great things with everyone's involvment!

Tonight was the first time i picked up a doumbek and i tried 2 with different heads...I found the animal skinned one better sounding and easier to play than the synthetic one....has anyone ever experienced this? Please share your thoughts....thanks)

Hey Edric, I was just trying to back you up on that other BD site. Now, I just found out I was talking smack to the brother of the drummer for the Police. But even though I feel he asked for it, I think we finally came to terms. The whole thing (when taken into context) was quite humorous and I can only imagine how many people were entertained if not offended. But that is just they way I roll... ya know, walking on the moon with Roxanne in perfect synchronicity. I guess everything us drummers do is magic. It kinda makes me get all goo goo goo a gah gah gah, that's all I wanted to say to you.

Peace...

Join up! There will be the need for more ambiance players at the 2006 burn!

Local Drum Group Looking Add

The local drum group (The White Claws), based in Peoria AZ, is looking to add a drummer or two of intermediate skill level or above. We play African, Middle-Eastern, Latin, fusion, etc. We jam open drum circles and also have an extensive repertoire of arranged pieces. We are constantly evolving… growing in terms of music and skill. We rehearse every Sunday afternoon in a private studio. We play a few SCA events but are now starting to do more non-SCA paying gigs with various local dance troupes. If you are interested and serious about world drumming, please contact Glenn off-tribe at evildrums@cox.net for more info. If you know someone who might be interested, please pass the word along. Thanks.

Advice for a Drummer Virgin....

To all of you experienced musicians/instructors out there....

1. What should a newbie look for in a drum? Think in terms of materials, workmanship, sound. How would one know a good drum from a lesser quality drum?

2. What is a reasonable price range for a good quality drum?

3. Any suggestions as to where one should go and look for a drum?

4. Practice time: What would be your minimum recommended "practice time" you'd tell your students to do at home between lessons?

5. Any other info you'd like to share?

Souhail Kaspar will be here for Doumbek & Riqq workshops on Saturday, March 11th, a dancer's rhythm & movement workshop on Sunday, March 12th and a fabulous show on Sunday evening at Olive Branch.
He has put together a wonderful ensemble of musicians: Naser Musa on Oud, Majdi Kurd on additional percussion (all from California) and our own Ramzy on keyboards. If that wasn't enough - there's dancers too!
Please come out and support these events. The valley's bellydance scene can only grow if we continue to learn and be a welcoming spot for touring artists and instructors Without a supportive dancer/musician community we will find Phoenix is passed over by the best and brightest of the Middle Eastern entertainers and instructors. I hope to see many of you there.

THANK YOU - Open Dance Night in Chandler

I'd like to say thank you to all the fantastic musicians that came out to play for us last night Marceau, Dionisio and their crew did a fabulous job of providing music that made it hard to sit down! Abdou Abdullah on the oud was a wonderful addition to their ensemble.

Every seat was full, many were left to stand and more were turned away at the door because it was so full. Our musicians were in some tight quarters but were very gracious about it. I cannot thank you all enough for bringing your art and good energy to the evening. It would not have been half as much fun without you all! We hope to see you all again next month.... date and (larger) location to be announced!

Warning >>> Be carefull whit West Coast Drum Center

My Friends,

It would like to become public what it happened with me, when by means of the InterNet, using my credit card I tried to buy instruments of percussion of the company West Coast Drum Center.

I bought 1 Tar and 1 Bodhran, the value was in $150,00 and received an email informing that the delivery tax would be in $45, thus totalizing $195,00.

Thus that the value of $195,00 was debited of my account was anxious for knowing when would receive the instruments and sent an email the West Coast Drum Center asking for a forecast of date of delivery, I was made an impression when I received the information from that they could not foresee, therefore they did not have the product in supply.

After one week of anxiety, I received a new email from the West Coast Drum Center informing that I would have to pay an extra tax of $35,00 to be able to receive the instruments, I answered the email informing that it would not pay more nothing, therefore already it had pay the instruments and a tax of $45,00 of the delivery.
I received another reply informing that the money would be returned.
I consulted the company of my credit card asking for an aid the respect of this in case that, I was informed of that it would have to ask for then to the company West Coast Drum Center a letter of confirmation of the cancellation of the purchase with the number of cancellation confirmed for the company of my credit card.
I made this order the company West Coast Drum Center and I was not taken care of, but they had said that my money already had been returned.

Now it would like that all evaluated the following problems:

Problem 1)
When I effected the purchase, I would have to little having been notified of whom he did not have the available product in supply before the confirmation of the purchase, thus being able simply to undo the business without problem some.

Problem 2)
The value of $195,00 was deducted of my credit card and I did not have no forecast of when my purchase he would be delivers and if really he would be delivers, the attendance of the company West Coast Drum Center was the worse possible one, nothing it was clearly and at any moment some interest in taking care of was demonstrated or deciding my problem to me well, always I was taken care of in extremely cold way, it dries.

Problem 3)
In my country, no matter how hard it is infested with corruption and people without moral value, the word still valley very, if I to say that a show mine is $50,00 the value that I will charge I am $50,00, if the show will be in the sky or in the hell and I will have that to spend some thing therefore, it is problem mine and of who it did not contract me, therefore I found a nonsense to have to pay more for a question of organization lack, forecast lack, incompetence or experience of the company West Coast Drum Center, the error of calculation was of them, they erraram and I did not receive to the little one clear satisfaction not even on the devolution from my money and an order from excuses.

Problem 4)
The days of anxiety and uncertainty that I passed and all the humilhação to have that to be almost that diarimente asking for to information on date of delivery and devolution of the money it was what more reached me, it is not the value of the money or the most important amount for me, e yes the attendance and the satisfaction of a good purchase.

Problem 5)
I received an email from the Yahoo Shopping asking as it had been the attendance of the company West Coast Drum Center, therefore the system of vendas of the West Coast Drum Center is filiado the Yahoo Shopping, I answered the email explaining the problem that was having and to leave of this I started to direct all e-mails that I received and I sent the West Coast Drum Center for the staff of the Yahoo Shopping, but as already she was of if to wait nobody of the Yahoo Shopping entered in contact with me and nor knows if they had received mine e-mails or had taken knowledge of this case.

I do not know as the people if they relate outside of Brazil, in the North America or the Europe, but I can affirm that the Brazilians have blood, it has heart, they are emotional, e demonstrates emotion, we are not robot, we are not machines, we are human beings!

I do not want that nobody me bajule, or it frees fogos of artifice for my cause, I only want well to be taken care of, with education and good will!

I am only becoming this in case that public for two reasons, I do not have blood of cockroach in my veins and was in a group in the Tribe.net that I found the address of the West Coast Drum Center in the InterNet.

Please they divulge this in case that, so that other people do not come to have this type of problem.

Tks for your time and atention

off topic - My fight against the cigarette

I started to smoke to the 12 years of age, still I remember as if it was today, it was in a cinema section watching the movie ET.
I have 35 years and in 23 years of smoker I used to smoke up to 3 cigarette mallets per day.
For some times I promised myself that i would quit smoking, but only today I perceive how much this is being difficult and how much the dependence, the vice enslaves us.

I ask myself if really ex-smokers exists, because even without smoking a few days, I dream that I am
smoking, in mine

thoughts I am smoking. I must archive this victory, I have a wife and a daughter who I really love and I want to live for them, I want to enjoy
my life with them and I must be healthy for this, but the cigarette doesn't allow that, if I continue smoking I know that earlyer or later

I will feel the consequences of this vice, consequences that are perhaps irreversible.

Today it is being the most difficult day for me, I woke up during the night some times sweating cold because of the
will to smoke and I hope to have enough will
to win this battle and I ask for who is reading my words to warn your children about the hazard of the
tobacco, don't let then fall in the market's lies, that attacks and it appeals exactly in the emptiness of the young,
in the anxiety of the teenagers in feeling adults, in their necessity to feel accepted by society...

The cigarette is like a false friend, that approaches you, seduces you and follows your decadance and dependence until the
end, a truth enemy is less harmful then a false friend.

Perhaps I win this battle, but only another addictioned can have any idea of the tremendous challenge tha is winning a vice.
