Remains of summer squash bed

I took an old worn out area from the wood pile and covered it with wasted cardboard. Then I covered the cardboard with about three feet of straw. The straw was watered vigorously, then left to settle for a few days. After the straw compacted just a little, I took a sharp spade and dug eighteen-inch across holes all the way to the cardboard. Using excellent compost, I filled each hole with soil. Into each mound of soil, I planted summer squash seeds. There was virtually no maintenance to this bed. When we had a dry spell, the moisture stayed in the soil. This garden was close enough to the house so that if a zuke was needed anytime of day, it was easy to harvest. By not planting the summer squash behind the barn, the squash were harvested daily and did not get out of hand.
