I'm a noob here, so I hope I'm not over stepping my bounds. I just wanted to let any martial artists going to Burning Man this year know that we will be providing a Combat Club during the event! We have two goals in doing so, one to increase awareness of martial arts among the citizens of Black Rock City; and two, to give martial artists and combat sport athletes a place to train, compare technique, and hang out. We'll be offering introduction classes on fundamental MMA techniques as well as an open mat for more advanced players. So if you want an easy and free way to learn what has made MMA the fastest growing sport around the globe or if you want to just have a place to train while at home, please stop by our theme camp.
We have a group here: tribes.tribe.net/brccombatclub
Or you can see our site at brc.cc
Hope to meet you there!

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 2:39 PMI am not aware of a fight club from 2006. I have heard of the Pillow Fight Club, and I did hear that there were once a couple of MMA bouts in front of the temple of atonement. Do you have more details? I'd love to hear about it! -

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 4:26 PMUnfortunately, I never participated, but I did watch a few of the fights.. All I can remember is that it was on the Esplanade somewhere around 5 o'clock and there was a big stage set up. As far as I know, you had to bring a fight partner, but I may be wrong about that.. Of course, I could have hallucinated the whole thing.. It is, after all, burningman... lol -

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 5:25 PMAre you going to have rules, or specify the level of aggression for different combatants? Not everybody trains with the same safety standards, and some people prefer more aggressive competition while others prefer safety. -

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 2:22 PMWe will be offering two classes each day - a beginners and an advanced. The beginners class will allow for drilling and light sparring. The second hour will be held for advanced students. I require that I know all participants in the advanced class either personally or via one of the beginners class. The advanced class is more open mat then instructional. I expect there to be harder sparring and drilling and will let partners dictate intensity below a certain point. I do not want any injuries and will be placing a lot of emphasis on partner safety and the fact that the BRC-CC is a place of training primarily.

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 9:41 AMSpicy,
I was one of the referees for Fight Club, which was at the Temple of Atonement at 4:20 and Esplanade in 2006. :>
The fights were to first blood or submission, with various styles. At the end, there was oil wrestling. *grin* -

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 2:27 PMWow! I had heard about this, but this is the first real confirmation I've had of it. How many fights were there and what styles were included? Did you have to bring your own partner? Was any safety gear used (gloves)?
Exiting! -

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 5:17 PMMaybe 20-30 combatants, including 5-7 women, no protective gear. Some brought partners, some just showed up and asked for pickups. :> -

Re: Martial Arts at Burning Man
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 2:39 PMLadies and gents,
In the past month, I've learned companies don't like to give things away for free. We're still short on a number of items we need to help pull off our dojo/gym. If you want more info on what we're doing, check out brc.cc
I just went out and bought a 10x10 mat to donate to the BRC-CC. However, at a minimum we need two of these. Do any of you have or know of anyone with puzzle piece mats - people use them to line garages, gyms, etc. I'm also willing to take old yoga mats, gymnastic mats, etc. Anything at this point.
Secondly, do you or any of your family/friends have old boxing/grappling/sparring gloves? Debase camp collectively can round up somewhere between 5-6 pairs. However, we really need at least 10 and preferably 20. Every pair helps!
Lastly, we really should have focus mitts or thai pads. I know these are less common, but if you know any ex-boxers/kick boxers please check with them.
We must have the mats. If we don't get the other gear, I can scale back the classes and only include drills that can be done without them.
Thank you for reading and asking around!
The man burns in 46 days!!!
