i've been teaching myself about propagation a lot this year, having finally got my own garden *aaaaaaaaah*, and one of my goals has been to propagate a fern (from spores) that grows like mad down by the beach (I live 3 miles from the North Sea, on the east coast of the UK).
my question is this - how much do I need to protect the spore-growth from frost and snow? we get a good amount of snow up here, and some deep frosts, even on the beach itself - do I need to bring the pots indoors for winter, or would it be enough to cover them with dead fern/undergrowth and leave them outside?

Re: fern propagation question
Wed, August 17, 2005 - 9:36 AMI have grown quite alot of ferns from spores useing an old fish tank , with a sheet of glass on the top and a layer of compost in the bottom , I just chucked the fronds with the spores on it face down on the damp compost and just let em get on with it ! I kept it out side in my rose arbour with the cover on summer & winter and was pretty sucsessfull ! I have an even bigger (4ft) tank to use this year after the silicon seals went and we had tro get a new one !
