Anybody know of a good way to get rid of them.... there are a couple of cute salamanders in my garden, and I don't want to kill them in the process of killing the snails. Any suggestions?

Re: Snails
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 12:59 AMI have lots of problems with them here in San Diego, especially after all the rain we got. In order to not polute the soil with nasty chemicals, I bought a case of real cheap beer and poured them into cups and set them near my plants in my yard, but out of the general line of sight.
It seems that the slugs and snails like beer, crawl in and drown! I caught this bit of advice on PBS.
Happy snail hunting! -

Thu, April 21, 2005 - 8:10 AMI don't know if salamanders like beer, though.

Re: Snails
Fri, April 22, 2005 - 5:54 PMi have the same problem with slugs! think the same thing will work for slugs as well? my strawberry plants have spread like crazy .. it's great .. but the slugs always get to the strawberries before i can! i have yet to claim one for myself ..
anything else to try in addition to the beer idea?

Re: Snails
Fri, April 22, 2005 - 9:29 PMThe other thing that the lady on PBS with the beer idea had, was to go around in the early morning collecting the slugs and snails and smooshing them as she was big into not putting poison on her garden and subsequently back into the water table. -

Sat, April 23, 2005 - 8:12 AMsounds like a lot of work .. =P maybe i'll give the beer thing a try .. it will be a slug party in my garden .. at best, they'll be too hung over to think about touching my strawberries :)

Re: Snails
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 9:34 AMI feed our slugs and snails to our chickens, and their numbers definitely dropped as a result. But before that, we used beer in cat food cans. They willingly drown themselves.
I found this page of slug remedies, apparently salamanders eat slugs:

Re: Snails
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 9:37 AMinteresting .. chickens like slugs ? the only problem with that remedy is my lack of chickens .. i'll check out your recommended site tho .. thx!! -

Re: Snails
Sat, April 23, 2005 - 3:38 PMIt was the slug smooshing that got me on that thought, but I do feel for anyone with a lack of chickens. :) -

Re: Snails
Tue, April 26, 2005 - 12:20 AMMy chickens will eat anything in front of them except for slugs. They peck at them and then walk away. I've found that ground ginger sprinkled around the plants has worked better than anything else. It burns them and they turn around and go the other direction. The only problem w/ ground ginger is that if it's raining it has to be applied every couple days. -

Re: Snails
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 10:19 PMSmushing is more humane, isn't it? I salted a slug once and it was horrifying. :P -

Re: Snails
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 8:05 PMi know .. i did once too & i felt so sadistic watching it melt ..... =( i just want to keep them away from my strawberries, not disintegrate them .. btw, do slugs have any beneficial characteristics for the garden? i think earthworms do ..

Re: Snails
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 6:33 AMHostas are especially susceptible to slugs and snails. Here's an excellent article on slugs in the hosta garden from a Hosta nursery but applicable to any garden. It has all the usual techniques plus some of which I've never previously heard or tried.

Re: Snails
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 10:29 PMPicking snails and squishing them is tedious and kinda yucky, but if you're going to do it that way I recommend tossing the condemned snail under a flagstone and stepping on that. No muss no fuss. -

Re: Snails
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 10:41 AMThe problem with smashing snails and slugs is that their eggs will still be viable and will just fall out onto wherever you smashed them and then hatch. A better method is to drop the slugs & snails in a bucket of soapy water. That will kill both slug/snail & eggs. -

Re: Snails
Thu, May 12, 2005 - 7:04 AMI'll try that. What to you do with the stuff in the bucket when you're done?

Re: Snails
Fri, May 13, 2005 - 11:13 AMThe best way to get rid of them is to go snail hunting and kill them. The best time is around ten pm. I go out with a flashlight and smash them with a shovel. If you don't get rid of them, they attract flies and smell pretty bad. You can bury them about 4 inches downa and they can be plant food.
I think thesoapy water and the salt prolong the dying (they bubble and squirm) and I think it's more humane to just smash them.
I also use copper wire wrapped around my containers. You can buy tape that is made for the purpose, but wire from the hardware store is a lot less expensive. It's been working pretty well. I heard that you can also use pennies that you tape together, but I haven't tried it.

Re: Snails
Thu, June 16, 2005 - 11:33 PMwow... either the salamanders in my garden are fat or they died... I have a huge number of snails and slugs. I'm gonna try the beer (although, I hate to get rid of a good beer... unless it works of course) -

a worm that infests snails...

It would be an ecological disaster but,

Sorry to hear about the snails...
Putting some cheap beer in cat food cans will work for slugs or snails...and the salamanders will be fine... they are not beer drinkers...I think they prefer wine...LOL
