Can't sex a dog???

I can't believe that there are actual adult people out there who cannot tell the difference between a male and femal puppy. In the past few days I have seen two cases of folks who just don't have a clue.
First one, a chihuahua puppy, came in for a nail trim with practically the whole family...they just got the puppy and wanted to name "her" after the lioness in the Lion King, but they couldn't remember her name, so we told them and "her" name became "Nala". So my pather takes the puppy, puts it on a table and starts slipping the pup into the grooming loops. With the puppy raised, on the back paws, I saw that "Nala" was in fact, a He. They were slightly embarrassed...they said that they thought it was some sort of little lump that was just going to drop off....or perhaps it was a nipple. Well, now they had to think up a new name.

Second one...woman (early thirties) brings in a puppy (another chi...very popular here) in a bag. She says that she wants to have a baby, but her mother told her to try a dog first, so she goes and buys a puppy at the flea market. She kept referring to the pup as "he". She was in what I call "puppy shock" brand new pup in the house and not quite sure what to do with it...she was asking about housebreaking, and if it was okay to leave "him" home alone for 12 hours while she was at work. (duh) So I'm going to clip the nails on the pup, we get the pup out of the bag, look at the belly, and tell her that "he" is a "her". She points at the pup's little nub tucked between her back legs and says, "But that" a penis" "No," I say, "it's a vulva". She insists that it is a penis, and I have to repeat that it is indeed a vulva and that penii are higher up on a dog's belly. I think I finally had her convinced. Poor pup...I wish I could just take dogs away from people and tell them they are just too stupid to care for a dog.

When we got turtles in at Alameda shelter, I used to sex them. But then again I used to have a ton of turtles, sooooo naturally I became the turtle sexer at the shelter. But thats kinda hard unless you know what to look for.

Dogs on the other hand...really? Cats...maybe I could see it when they are little kittens, but a dog really? Some people arent the brightest sometimes.

there's an awful lot of people walking around who think hens can only lay eggs if there's a rooster around. I tell them that I don't need a man to have my period and neither does the hen. After that has been clarified, we move on to ducks and are back at square one.

Cat, I go through the EXACT SAME THING!!!!! People don't understand how we get eggs when we don't have a rooster! My favorite one though is when they refer to eggs as "chicken abortions." Good grief!

I have had to show people how to sex a lobster, but never a dog. That's unbelievable.

OMG... that is scary. People like that should be spayed / neutered.

I ran into this all the time working at the animal shelter.
I think some people just don't want to look "down there"...they may be prudey in the rest of their life as well. Or they may just be stupid :)
The really sad one for me was when an employee couldn't tell if a dog was neutered, especially older dogs. I usually did a "reach around" on nice dogs when they came in the door, easy to pick a male (and their neuter status) that way!

so after reading and replying to this thread, a lady came into the shelter with a dog that she said had been tied out on the dock for hours and he was barking. He was a nice dog. It was a harried evening and I really didn't look and did a quick feel, I thought it felt not quite right (monorchid?) but decided I'd check more thoroughly later. After all the lady said it was a male.

                    Impounded it as a male...
Nope, it was an unspayed female. D'oh!!

Many years ago, I had this customer who always referred to her dog as "he". Dog's name was Pepper, and Pepper was definitely a "she". Owner knew this, but always referred to her as "he". I would always take great care to prissy her up with pink bows and always accentuate the "she" when speaking about her: "SHE had a couple fleas on her today," "Oh, that's why HE'S been so itchy" "Yes, so I gave HER a flea bath and a conditioner to ease the itchies" "Thank you, I'm sure HE feels much better now" That went on for the 7 years I groomed her until little Pepper passed away at the age of 12.
