Humpy Humperson

Someone brought this up in another tribe and I wanted to run it by ya'll.

Basically, i brought up the fact that my dog humps other dogs (he's selective. He's a neutered male and humps younger, male dogs about his size. He likes labs :)). This person then asked how we feel to be OWNED by our dogs, as any humping is a sign of dominence. I know he's showing dom to these other dogs........

So my contention is that he knows I'm above him (and he never humps people, knows he's a dog). This person seems to think that any humping means the dog thinks he is the top of the pack. I believe that dogs know the heirarchy, there are levels. They hump the under dogs to establish their rank.

So, does humping anything mean they think they are top dog or are there levels of dominence?

Working sole-ly with Siberian Huskies, they tend to have a very pack-oriented mind set when a group of them are together.

I have one female (Fixed) Siberian who is mine-and-mine-alone, and she travels with me as I go from kennel to kennel working.

My question is, are they humping, or mounting? My FEMALE will mount (even thrust a little) to show her dominance over another dog. I've seen other females, and fixed (and non fixed) males do it as well. The last kennel I worked at (By kennel, I mean dog sled kennels) we had a male and female who acted like husband/wife, though if I remember correctly they were brother/sister (they were seperated during her heats). She was the boss of him, and would mount him all the time.

So, I guess my answer is that yes, it is a dominance thing.... though I also think it can be a sign of play as well.

I know it's a dominance thing. Yes, it's humping. He humps all the foster dogs we get.
But does it mean he thinks he's above me?
      (He's a husky/rott (????), if that means anything)

No, he knows you are dominant. My dog doesn't hump other dogs,as a rule. She does get some dogs trying to get up on her and she will sort of put up with it for like a second, then snap at them. Most stop right then and there.

I don't think it's about you Molly, he still thinks your cute.

          Just sayin'

          :o)

No but seriously, NO it's not a sign of dominance with YOU, but yes with the other dogs, sure.

    chain of command.

Large dominant dogs hump Smokey, OK well most dogs hump Smokey.
In turn Smokey humps dogs who are even more wimpy than Smokey. Smokey is a wimpy as they come, so rarely does he get the chance to show his dominance.

Scarlet only humps blankets, and the occasional stuffed animal...she is definitely the ruler of home decor! Take that you evil pillow!!

      LOL!
I had a friend who raised standard poodles and one of his bitches had a large stuffed toy poodle that she used to hump all the time.

Dogs only hump things they feel they can be dominant over. It does not mean that they feel dominant over everything and everybody.

Riley used to be REALLY into a blanket he had. LOL. He'd hump it until he'd nearly collapse from exhaustion. We took it away and he hasn't had an issue since.

Scarlet used to humped a stuffed animal i had since I was little. One night she had a fit of passion and ripped his head off. I was seriously traumatized. I cant get that image out my head, really disturbing.
          I really miss Pookie.

I saw a lot of humping last night! *L* We went over to a friend's house and she's got 2 frenchies and was watching her mom's frenchie so we had a total of 4 running around. For some reason the most mellow of them all, a male, likes to hump the female of the hosue when she's in the backyard looking through the fence. She's a watch dog of sorts so she gets riled up by looking out at people and when she starts to get anxious or excited, he humps her. The owners think it's a way for him to say, don't worry, I've got this under control. Hahahaha, it was pretty damn funny. It was definitely a line up of who's really in control with my pup, the outsider of the house, at the bottom.

Ok, our female dog constantly humps our male dog. She knows she's submissive to us and would never think of humping us. Humping other dogs is your dog showing those dogs that he is dominant over THAT dog, not over anyone. That person is clueless.

The funniest thing I've seen is dogs humping *at* dogs. Hahahaha! At the park I've seen it when a dog wants to be the leader, wants to be the dominant, but can't so they hump the air while looking at the dog they want to dominate. So funny. I've only seen Saffy do it once (and the only time I've seen her hump at all) and it was too funny - she humped the side of her bed while staring at my dad's dog.

I had a friend whose pugdog would hump their pot belly pig. Very disturbing sight...

The funniest thing I've ever seen also involved a pug humping another dog. They were from the same family. They had this big burly pitbull and it was playing tug of war with another big burly pitbull. And there in the back is the pug getting his hump on with the first pitbull. He was just panting so hard and the pitty was totally ignoring him. It was hilarious!

"Little Gomez," lyrics and music by Eric Bogle:

Oh, I used to have a doggie and I called him little Gomez
Because he was a Mexican Chihuahua
Though there wasn’t much to him what there was all cojones
In fact he was a randy little fella big dogs, small dogs were all the same to him
The canine equivalent of Errol Flynn
At the drop of a sombrero he’d jump up and get stuck in
Taking Gomez out for walkies was embarassin’

I remember one day in the park his tally rose by four
An enviable score he was amassing, two very patient poodles and an Irish Labrador
And a wombat who just happened to be passing
I tried every way to curb his carnal appetite
I kept him on a leash by day, I locked him up at night
I even put some bromide in his chunky meaty bites
But the only thing that might have worked was Kryptonite

Then came the fateful day when he tried to consummate
A liaison with a Saint Bernard from Dublin
And although he was quite clearly fighting well above his weight
He didn’t let that minor detail stop him
He nearly pulled it off, oh, what an acrobat!
But the bitch got bored and down she sat
Well, they say that after making love you sometimes feel quite flat
I’m sure that little Gomez would agree with that

I buried Gomez in the park, his happy hunting ground a sad but fitting finale
Though I had to make a grave that was very flat and round
‘Cause he looked like squashed tamale
But oh, how I missed my wee Chihuahua chum
I went down to the pet shop to find another one
I went there feeling happy, but I left there feeling glum
Because the man behind the counter loved corny puns

And he said “Yes, we have no Chihuahuas we have no Chihuahuas today
We have Alstations, Dalmatians, fruits of all flirtations,
An alpine Pekinese in a toupee
But yes, we have no Chihuahuas we have no Chihuahuas today”
