what does kennel cough sound like?

My dog lately has been doing this really weird cough thing. It sounds like he's got something caught in his throat and is trying to hack it up. He kind of does this weird huff-cough thing and then coughs really big but nothing comes up. I'm afraid he might have kennel cough because he's been going to daycare a lot lately because it's been raining and we haven't been able to walk them. Does this sound like kennel cough? I'm probably going to call the vet about him anyway because he also has some strange bumps on the underside of his chin, but I was just wondering if anyone had any idea what this was.

It sounds like KC to me. I would take him in for sure. They will probably have him come in through a seperate entrance because KC is really contagious. Most Day Care places around here require a KC vaccination before they accept a dog into the group....I know that you can get the Vacines here at the local feed stores. They have a nasal thing that is good for 6 months or you can get a shot from the vet that's good for longer I think.

Sounds like it to me, too (both of our Dals came back from the Nationals with it one year ... ugh). You never forget it once you've heard it -- I told people it sounded like the dogs had whooping cough. :-/

and unfortunately, the vaccine is not 100% effective...it will lessen any case of it, but not always prevent it. Kennel cough is much like our common cold, many different viruses can combine to cause coughing. Bordatella and parainfluenza are the most common strains. The parainfluenza vaccine is in just about every vaccine cocktail. DHLPP is the most common vaccine cocktail...the initials stand for Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo and Parainfluenza. Bordatella vaccine is most commonly given intranasal and seems to be the most effective, but the vaccine only lasts 6 months.

It would be a good idea to get a vet check just to confirm the diagnosis. Other things can cause coughing, from allergies to heart disorders, so it's always good to get confirmation. Not much is done in the way of treatment...like the flu, it just has to run it's course, just be sure to keep your dog away from public areas, and especially away from other dogs or places where dogs frequent for at least 14 days after your dog stops showing symptoms. Dogs can spread the virus for quite a long time after they've stopped coughing.

My dogs have been coughing and sneezing a bit more in the last few days. I recently adopted a new dog, so its totally possible they both have kennel cough now. :( I hope they just have allergies, since the new doggie isn't coughing or sneezing much, just my other dog who does have allergies. I'm taking her to the vet to be sure, but in the mean time I'm going to use bendryl which my vet suggested for her allergies in the fall. Fingers crossed!!

Well, we took him to the vet and he said it's either kennel cough or allergies. He thought it was probably kennel cough because Nickel has been to daycare so much recently. Whatever it is, he said it's a mild case. Anyway, he gave us some antibiotics and so, hopefully, it should be cleared up pretty soon. I'm just worried that my other dog will get it from him.

I took mine to the vet too, and she said the same thing. She said if it was kennel cough, it was very mild. I am giving her benadryl twice a day to help if it is allergies and taking her back in 2 weeks to get re-checked. (Shes due for her bordetella vac of all things too)
