Living in my back yard. Of course, Sadie Mae wants to play with it and we've had several very close encounters but she's been REALLY lucky so far. We take her out on her leash at night now so she can't go roust the beast up out of the flower bed - but I'm worried that at some point her luck will run out and she'll get sprayed. What is the best way to get the oh so lovely skunk smell off her when it happens? I've heard that there are much better things to use than tomato juice - and I would like to have something on hand, just in case.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Tue, November 3, 2009 - 3:31 PMI'd seen that recipe when I "googled" but wanted to know if it worked. Now I've got to figure out how to get the skunk out of the yard! -

Re: I've got a skunk...
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:51 AMFigure out where the den is, and how many skunks you have. Seriously, this is part of the issue. Once you know that the den is empty, put ammonia-soaked cotton balls in the den. The skunks will leave.
Been there, done that. :-)

Re: I've got a skunk...
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 2:43 PM"Live Trap" it.......keep a towel or blanket over the cage. If you don't someone else will have to deal with it. Skunks don't relocate well so if you give it to animal control it will be euthanized.

Re: I've got a skunk...
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:13 AMThe key is to apply the solution as quickly as possible. The longer skunk juice stays on the coat, the more it soaks into the individual hair shafts, and the more difficult it is to remove.
The best way is to use the baking soda/peroxide/dish soap (regular Dawn dish soap) as soon as you can, rinse well, then apply Nature's Miracle skunk odor remover, and allow it to air dry on the coat.
I would think that if ammonia soaked cotton balls worked to shoo them from their dens, I would probably place ammonia soaked rags around the yard to chase them away.

Re: I've got a skunk...
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 9:54 PMDawn, baking soda and peroxide works wonders. I used it when Smokey brought a half decomposed squirrel into the house as a housewarming gift in our last apartment. I washed him like 2 times a day for a couple of days until the smell was gone. I did have to get rid of my mattress & sheets though, since thats where he left the gift......
Also I tomato juice works well. Also you can use a spray bottle with vinegar too, just stay away from the eyes.
My moms rottie used to get sprayed a couple times a year when she would find the dens.
But be careful if the skunk sprays the dog in the eyes, you will want to flush her eyes with water immediately and hold a towel with milk on them. Its should stop the burning.

Re: I've got a skunk...
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 2:07 PMThanks for the info - I've got the peroxide and stuff handy for shampooing and have talked to the wildlife dept about renting a trap. Our animal control here absolutely SUCKS, tho. They will only take "domestic" animals. So what is a resident supposed to do with a wild critter?!? Guess if I catch the stinky thing, I'll haul it out to one of the more secluded parks... Hopefully having my flower bed and under the deck littered with ammonia soaked cotton balls (which Sadie Mae also finds interesting, doofus!) will run the skunk off and I won't have to worry about catching it.
Thanks again! -

Thu, November 26, 2009 - 7:08 PMIf you are near the ocean, then just go for a swim. The acidity of the salt water work. Every skunk remedy is acidic. -

Fri, November 27, 2009 - 1:06 AMactually sea water is basic, not acidic....
