When we first adopted Riley his nose was all black. Then about a year ago we noticed that he had a faint stripe down the center of it. Now that stripe (which is a much lighter gray then the rest of his nose) is more pronounced. I'm wondering if it is related to spending so much time out of the sun, kind of like losing a "tan." Anyone experience this before?

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:34 AMI've noticed that my doggy, a Bichon, seems to get seasonal skin and nose color changes. His nose gets lighter in winter, as do the dark patches of his skin. *shrug* :)

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:57 AMMy pup Peggy Sue started with a nose as black as coal. Her nose now is black and pink. But recently I have noticed it looks like it is getting blacker again.

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 12:41 PMStona has a spot on her nose that seems to be lighter in the summer but darker in the winter. =) Her coloring has changed so much over the years it's incredible. So if their fur can change color I don't see why their noses couldn't.

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 3:13 PMSmokey's nose was black when I first got him, now its more grey and has a few small pink spots. I wouldnt worry about it unless you see growths, swelling etc.
Im guessing its like freckles for us, mine seem to be out loud and proud during the summer.
You can use a natural baby sun block on his nose.

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 6:55 PMIt seems there are three general reasons for pigment loss in a dog's nose.
The first is vitaligo, a skin disorder that can cause loss of pigment
The second is what's commonly known as "snow nose" which generally affects whit dogs during cold weather
And the third is caused from eating and/or drinking from plastic dishes. Plastic dished can also cause acne on a dog's face and chin. -
