Looking for some advice.
My doggy, a 17 year old Bichon, has one ear that has become really cruddy in the last few months. At first it was both ears, though one to a lesser degree, and I cleaned them out with rubbing alcohol. Plucked the hair, too. One ear cleared right up. The other, however, is worse than ever. It doesn't smell particularly bad and it's not infected, just really oogie, with lots of dark brown wax. Bothers him a little, a bit itchy, but not like in the past when he's had infections. When I clean it out it stays clear for a few days, then comes back.
Any idea what it is? I'll take him to the vet if I have to, but I've been avoiding it because of the logistics and language barrier (crazy Naples traffic is fine for me alone, but I worry about him even in a seatbelt, and the fact that I speak very little Italian). If it was mites, wouldn't he have it in both ears? Are there any online remedies you can recommend?
Thanks muchly!

Oh, man. Being in another country makes it more difficult.
As far as I know, mites *can* be a problem in just one ear. (I could be wrong, though. ) You should probably be cleaning them both, *every* day.
I'm guessing it would be safest to take him to the vet.
I'm hoping Thistle will chime in soon. Chances are she will have some good advice for you. -

Re: One cruddy ear.
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 6:57 AMYou said it's gooey, not crusty, right? If it were crusty, I'd say mebbe ear mites but not with gooey ears.
Gooey dark discharge is most likely either allergies or infection. You can try a little benedryl (I use children's chewables for Pip when his allergies are acting up). If benedryl is not available, than any children's antihistamine that does NOT contain acetaminophen. Try it for a couple days see if it helps or not. If it does, great...if not, then you'll have to steal yourself up for a vet visit. Can you put your dog in a carrier for the trip? It's even safer than seat belts.
When cleaning ears, use Witch Hazel instead of alcohol. It has both antiseptic and anti-fungal properties and is much more soothing and less irritating than alcohol. Clean the ears every other day. If you plan on taking the dog to a vet, then don't clean the ears for a few days because the vet is going to want to look at the type of discharge.
Also, take a close look at your dog's diet. No corn, no wheat, no soy. If the ear problems become chronic, then take the dog off of all grains and sugar (meaning, no beets or squash, yams or dog treats that have been sweetened)) Add some salmon oil or flaxseed oil to food. Also, at 17 you should probably also be adding a supplement with digestive enzymes just to help your dog utilize all the nutrition from their food.
Good luck, and please keep us updated. -

Re: One cruddy ear.
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 7:09 AMHow does the skin inside look? Is it smooth or puffy looking? If it's puffy looking it could be a fungal infection..if so, then definitely take your dog off all grains and sugars and clean the ears regularly with witch hazel. -

Re: One cruddy ear.
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 11:56 AMIt's smooth, that's part of why I'm confused. He's had many ear problems throughout his life, including infections and yeast, but this isn't any of that. *shrug* -

Re: One cruddy ear.
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 6:22 PMUsually yeast infections are coupled with puffy, slightly crusty ears and are pretty stinky. So it's most likely either bacterial infection or allergy reactions.
