leash laws

Has anyone ever called the city on someone for not keeping their dog on a leash? It seems to be rampant in my neighborhood and I'm worried that the dogs are going to inadvertently hurt someone (a dog ran into me and knocked me down and if I was a bigger jerk, I could make a big stink about it and say it was a mean dog), or run into the street and get hit by a car. Part of me wants to call the city because I'm protecting the dog even if the owner won't, but then I also don't want to be "that person", you know. And in case my dogs were ever to get away from me (especially my jack russell because she's pretty yappy and territorial) and do something someone didn't like, they might retaliate because I'm the one who makes a big thing about leashes.

I'm pretty sure he did because he asked if I was okay. But that was pretty much the end of it. I didn't really want to stay and chat with him because my dog was flipping out about his dog having "attacked" me (not that I think it actually attacked me, but I'm sure that's what my dog was thinking).

Yeah, but they aren't the only ones that frequently leave their dogs out in the front yard with no leash and hardly any supervision.

I've done it several times. Twice I've had two different neighbor's dog(s) attack my dogs while on a walk (two different occasions) because their dogs were off leash. This is most likely the reasons my dogs are now dog aggressive. I've even taken one dog to the shelter myself because there was no owner around. That dog ended up being really aggressive and they had to have me back my car up into a bay, shut the doors and use a catch pole to get it out of my car. Fortunately I had a pet barrier in my car so I could drive safely. The problem in my neighborhood isn't so much people walking their dogs off leash, but rather people just letting their dogs out unsupervised. We also have a daycare two doors down from me, so loose dogs have the potential to be more than just a nuisance.

What drives me crazy are the people who have leash in hand, but not attached to the dog. Hello?! Leash laws mean that the leash has to be connected to the dog! 'Course, these are probably the same people who leave their dogs' crap all over the neighborhood...my second biggest pet peeve.

I don't call the law on them because I don't have a cell phone

Having worked for the Parks dept and been verbally abused for pointing out the lesh laws in the park, I wish you luck.

Since being at the Water Bureau I have warned owners that have dogs in the fountains that they need to leash their dogs and have gotten better responses. Calling the law is pointless, animal control shows up hours after the fact......

Unless you say the "pitbull" word. I called once over an aggressive border collie, they never showed so I took him in (the one I mentioned before). I called another time about a friendly pit mix and not only were they there in less than 10 min, but they showed up with two trucks and three officers.

As a dog-walker & someone who lives in a neighborhood with lots of dogs, I find this so frustrating!

Most people who let their dogs off leash outside of the dog-park are completely oblivious. They usually aren't paying attention to their dog & it's usually 10 feet in front or behind them while they yack on their cell phone, push a stroller or chat with their friends. They don't notice when or where their dog defecates. They insist the dog is under their control. They don't care if someone is terrified of dogs. "Oh he's harmless!" They don't care if their dog chases cats! They're convinced their dog won't run into the street. Police & animal control usually have more pressing matters so I'd recommend snapping a photo with your cell phone if you want to file a complaint!

I once pet-sat for a couple whose dog had recently died. They always walked their pitbull off leash. (A rude thing to do, no matter how nice your pit is because some people are terrified!) They insisted that she always heeled & never disobeyed until the day she ran out in front of a bus IN FRONT OF THEIR CHILD! They were so out of touch that they didn't see anything wrong with their behavior. I sincerely hope they never get another dog!

A couple of weeks ago I saw 2 women on my street. One had a dog on a leash & the other was pushing a stroller. Running up into all the yards was a golden retriever who obviously belonged to them. They were not paying any attention to it.

The dog ran up onto one lawn pissed & then squated for a big poo. Then it went a few feet over and took another dump! I asked if the golden was their dog & the woman with the stroller said, yes. I asked if she was going to clean up her dog. She kind of giggled, "oh did he poop. I didn't see." The women did not appear to have any bags with them. She made made no move to clean anything up or even find out where it was.

I turned into curmudgon lady! I told her leash laws were there for a reason; to protect her neighbors, herself & her dog. She glared at me, and I felt like a bitch, but the next time I saw her she had the dog on a leash so maybe I did some good.

I read a blog somewhere where someone caught this couple's off leash dog crapping in her garden. She asked them to pick it up and they refused. So she went in her house, got a plastic baggy, picked it up, got into her car, caught up with them and threw the bag o' poo at them. Hilarious, though I probably wouldn't recommend it.

the last neighborhood I lived in there was a dalmation who freely roamed in the morning and used to crap on this one house's lawn. The woman who owned the house would pick up the poop in a paper plate and leave it on the doorstep of the dogs house with notes like "looks like you forgot something" and " your dog left a gift on my lawn for you"

I have picked up dog crap numerous times and walked over to the people and said "here you forgot this". They always give a strange look....but ultimately get the hint.

Glad to know there are so many other responsible pet owners out there who are equally annoyed.

Are both AWESOME, BRAVE, and HILARIOUS responses! I am so glad I'm not the only one who gets so annoyed at this stuff. If I ever get a video camera there will at least be some shaming posts on YOU TUBE!

I think that dogs, when taken outside of they're own yard should always be on leash, for the dog's own safty and that of the people around us. Our neighborhood has a few loligagers, but all are pretty friendly so I don't report them. If I can get ahold of them, which is rather hard, and they have a phone # on their tag, I will call the owner and tell them where the dog is. Sometimes when I think of it, I'll carry around a bag of dog cookies.

      Priceless!!!
Wish I knew for sure which dogs were leaving deposits all over our lawn, I'd do the same thing.

Just had an incident last night while walking Pippin. The pit a couple houses down from me bolted out of the door and charged towards Pip. Fortunately, Pip is small and I was able to scoop him in my arms before the dog got close. The dog tried leaping up on me to get to Pip, but I shouted "Off!" and the dog froze. I kept calling for the neighbor to come get their dog and it was several minutes before anyone even came out of the house and all they did was stand there and call the dog.
Every time I tried to move forward, the dog tried to make a leap towards Pip. The owner kept calling the dog, and the dog would just stare at her stupidly. I was finally able to walk past the woman and her house, and I told her that she needed to keep better control of her dog, but the woman completely ignored me.
When I entered my house, the dog was still half a block away from the woman and was not budging, and the woman wasn't going after the dog, either.
I'm just grateful that it was me and my dog, and not some child that the dog lunged after.

This seems to be typical behavior of bad owners. The two times my dogs were attacked, the owners just stood there calling their dogs. Both times I yelled at them to come get there *expletive* dogs. Of course they didn't. The first time I was lucky because my boyfriend was with me and he could help, but there were two dogs that time. I've even seen this owner-behavior at the dog park when a fight breaks out. The only one that goes to the dogs is the owner of the dog being attacked.

the area i live in is fairly rural...........and it seems no one here ever has their dogs on leashes....nor do any of them have fenced in yards....i do have a fenced in yard and when i do take my dogs off the property they are always on a leash......my town is also pretty small and just this past week in our news was the story of 3 dogs that were roaming about, 2 pitbulls and a german shepherd...apparently these were aggressive dogs because they had killed several other dogs, so the warning was to be on the lookout for them....eventually the owner was found........not sure what the outcome of all this was.....the only reason i heard of it was because my mom called to tell me about it...she was afraid i'd run into these dogs somewhere, and knowing how i am, would approach them....(which of course i would have done to see if they had tags)....so i guess my point is, yeah, we have leash laws, but seems like few people here observe them........i've never called the authorities even though there are 3 dogs that are frequently in my front (unfenced) yard.....they are'nt aggressive at all...i have, however approached their owner and asked if she isn't afraid they will get hit by a car.........apparently she isn't.....i don't understand people at all...
