I live on the bottom floor apartment, with a half-in ground patio. This morning I got up with Hiei, and when we went out to potty (she jumps on a patio bench, then up to the grass), I heard a noise and it was a baby robin from the nest that's in the tree next to my patio. The little robin had somehow fallen down into my patio.
Just at the same moment that I realized it was the baby robin, the parents of the robin started dive-bombing Hiei and I and screeching at us.
One of the robins hit Hiei twice, (no injuries, thankfully) and I got her in as quickly as possible. The baby robin has since managed to get out of the patio, back in it, and out again. The parents, however, are still peeved at Hiei and I and have been constantly squacking and screeching at us all day through our patio door, regardless if the baby is in the patio or not.
^_^
Hopefully they wont be mad much longer and Hiei will be able to sit outside again soon.
Here's a photo of the baby bird, perched under the patio bench.

Re: Those Vengeful Robin's
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:48 PMThe mama bird in our backyard is rather calm about us around her next. Several times she's been off in a tree watching as I peer into the rose bush to check on her babies. Birds are so funny. -

Thu, May 8, 2008 - 9:54 PMOMG, that is so funny that you had this experience...b/c I had the same kind of thing this morning.
Let doggie out for pee...crows CAWW CAWW at her...bring her in...an hour later let her out and I see the crows dive bombing her and pecking her back ! I run to scare them away from her to see she has one of their babies - fortunately it had just happened that moment and I don't think she'd hurt it yet... I scooped the baby up to a high safe branch / bush and put doggie in the house. The crows are now perched in trees BANGING their beaks on the bark, absolutely PISSED and there many more of them, about 6 now. Whilst I was trying to get her in, OMFG - it was like an Alfred Hitchcock movie and I'm not kidding. I had 4 crows coming at me like 6" away dive bombing me, I was running, spilled my tea - scared the sh** out of me... I never thought I'd be afraid of a bird, but a flock of them is another thing ! I stayed inside the rest of the day mostly as they were perched waiting for us..." here little human come outside " ... Later in the evening, sadly I found the baby crow had drowned in my pond. I guess fate had her plan for her that day. -

Re: Those Vengeful Robin's
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 9:07 AMYou totally reminded me of when I was high school there was a tree that had a bird's nest in it every year. Walking to school everyone would cross the street when passing that tree because the bird would literally attack you a la Hitchcock.

Re: Those Vengeful Robin's
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 2:46 PMI had a similar situation when a baby crow was grounded in our backyard. Not only the parents show up to defend the baby, but the whole crow community!! You got a posse to deal with!
Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my cat in one night and she got the baby crow. I'm not sure how since it wasn't a small bird, but I think it was injured already and just had to trust it was meant to be. -

Re: Those Vengeful Robin's
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 9:59 PMMy parents live on a hillside and have two falcons that live in their tree. The falcons are protected species. They used to dive bomb our cats when and one tried to pick up the smaller cat. And they also used to dive bomb my parents 120lb rottie. The rottie would go crazy and try to get the falcons.
I have to say that the falcons were a nuisance, they would leave rabbit and other small animal carcasses on the lawn and patio. My niece and nephew would see them and freak out. Hilarious if you ask me. But Im mean that way.
My dad called the wildlife control and they said they were protected falcons and if we tried to shoo them away, we would get fined or possible imprisonment. My dad would throw skittles a them to shoo them away, and they would dive bomb my dad.
They have moved on since then, and yes the sheriff was called once when my dad was throwing skittles at the birds...he got a stern warning.

Re: Those Vengeful Robin's
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 5:46 AMLets hear it for baby bird season! There's a robin nested on top of one of my neighbor's fence posts, right by my back gate. Everytime the dogs go out mom goes ballistic! One of my dogs is scared of her but the other WANTS that robin! I've got a little time before I have to worry about the fledglings falling out of the nest, but when that happens I guess I'll have to check the yard for baby birds before I can let my girls out. -
