One of my Pit Bulls is a big chicken. She's deathly afraid of thunder, big airplanes, and even my cell phone! I mean deathly afraid! She shivers and drools and tries to crawl into my lap. She'll wake me up from a sound sleep shaking and drooling because there was one clap of thunder and stay freaked out for an hour!
I've heard from several people that Rescue Remedy works for anxiety in dogs. Anyone have any experience with this? How much do I use and how do I give it to her? The air races are coming up and she gets freaked out for days because the planes go right over our house. Should I have heavier artillery on hand (drugs) or should Rescue Remedy do the trick?

Re: Rescue Remedy
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 2:35 PMI was at the pet store about to buy rescue remedy when the store clerk suggested another brand. She told me she's used rescue remedy and it worked with her large malumut scaredy-dog, but that over time it seemed to wear off. She recommended this product instead: www.homeopet.com/ (the anxiety one) and it works! It has measurements (drops per weight of dog), but I just squeeze for a second into my dog's mouth - sneaking it in the side of her mouth. It's just easier that way. I've also put it in her water.
My dog used to have terrible car anxiety where she'd foam at the mouth and overheat, panting heavily - it was crazy! I used these drops and she just kind of looks at me like "huh?" then goes to sleep. When we got our new dog I put a big dose in their water bowl - not sure if it helped, but they seemed to calm down, but that could have been just from exhaustion from playing so much! -

Thu, July 24, 2008 - 5:20 PMI just got the Rescue remedy, so I'll try that and if it works, I'll get the other one when it runs out. -

Thu, July 24, 2008 - 10:01 PMBenadryll just makes Saffy pass out. She usually stays awake and relaxes on the anxiety drops. I can give her the drops while we're home (did it before house guests arrive) and she's active, just not crazy.

Re: Rescue Remedy
Sun, July 27, 2008 - 8:37 PMRescue Remedy is a great situational remedy for stress and trauma, but there are others that are better for fear, especially if you want to really solve the problem rather than just help ease the stress when it happens. I use the brand Healing Herbs, which names their's "Five Flower Formula" (same as Rescue Remedy, which is a trademarked name)
Flower Essence Services makes a ready-made formula called "Fear-Less" that is good. There is also a "Anxiety/Fear" mix from Pet Essences. You can find these easily online with a search. Look for essence mixtures that contain at least Aspen and Mimulus, as these are core essences for fear.
When you're in the midst of the situation you can use a few drops as often as every couple of minutes, and can apply it topically as well as in the mouth. My dog doesn't care for the undiluted remedy straight from the bottle unless she's stressed, then she licks it off my hand.
If you're using one of the fear formulas you'll want to have the dog consume it several times a day for perhaps a month (not that it won't work in the moment, but you're trying to solve the problem long term so the continuous energetic nudging gets the system shifted more firmly). It works just as well diluted, so put a few drops in the drinking water daily, and add diluted remedy to their food, in addition to a direct dose once or twice a day. I have a PDF on my website that explains using flower essences if you're interested:
theartofdog.com/articles.html
The HomeoPet "Anxiety TFLN" is especially for noise fear (Thunder, Fireworks, Loud Noises). It's a homeopathic, which is a bit different than a flower essence remedy. You can use them at the same time if you like.
Rescue Remedy / Five Flower Formula is something I think everyone should have on hand for emergencies!
Cheers,

Re: Rescue Remedy
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 9:52 AMShe's not a fearful dog, overall. Just big noises. I'll look at the homeopathic one and I've already bought RR. Unfortunately, the air races are a week long and we won't be home the whole time. I just hate to see her in such a state for so long. It can't be healthy.
