I really like the flexibility of independently tweaking the density values of different wavelengths, but it seems that there is a VERY limited range of tweaking before obnoxious pixilization rears its ugly head.

So is it just me?

my software (aperture and lightroom)?

my camera (pentax k10d)?

as it is, i've pretty much returned to shooting film and my k10d is a paperweight, which makes me ponder selling it and using the proceeds to subsidize diving deeper into a medium format system or maybe a new one(i have a bronica etr now, but i'm not entirely thrilled with its design/interface).

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. By giving an honest answer, you will discover where you stand morally. The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision. Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous.
Please scroll down slowly and give due consideration to each line.

You are in Florida, Miami to be specific. There is chaos all around you caused by a hurricane with severe flooding. This is a flood of biblical proportions. You are a photojournalist working for a major newspaper, and you're caught in the middle of this epic disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless. You're trying to shoot career-making photos. There are houses and people swirling around you, some disappearing under the water. Nature is unleashing all of its destructive fury.

Suddenly you see a man floundering in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken down with the debris. You move closer... somehow the man looks familiar. You suddenly realize who it is. It's George W. Bush! At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to pull him under.

You have two options-you can save the life of G.W. Bush or you can shoot a dramatic Pulitzer Prize winning photo, documenting the death of one of the world's most powerful men.

So here's the question, and please give an honest answer:

Would you select high contrast colour film, or would you go with the classic simplicity of black and white?

PHOTOGRAPHERS--STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!

READ THIS:
Fees proposed for photographing public lands:
www.seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/...3.html

AND THEN READ THIS:

Photographers did nothing while, local and state beaches, and cities, decided
to write new ordinances that made photographers cash-cows to the government.
I suggest photographers do something now, before it's too late.

Problem:
Define "commercial". By letting local landmanagers be responsible for implementation and enforcement, there will
be mistakes, over-zelous rangers citing people when they probably shouldn’t–it happens. I liken this to what
happend at local state and city beaches, if the rangers or officers catch someone with a really nice camera they
will probably ask you to leave or cite you. They just can’t tell who is who when it comes to photography. With the
advent of cheap digital SLRs, just about everyone looks like a professional. What really sucks is the fees, they
will be straight across the board expensive, and have insurance requirements too. So wether you are a newbie
wanting to take a picture to sell a few postcards at the local gift shop or wanting to do stock photography (with
no guarantee of income), it will COST YOU…. Even if it’s personal, you will get hassled, because you look
“professional.”

The photo-journalist are worried about how it affects their news reporting of non-breaking news. I think that
freelance photographers and advanced hobbyists should be the ones really worrried–they are the biggest cash cow,
because there are more of them.

I would suggest everyone that has a camera voice out against permit requirements for photography. It simply does
not require the large crews that the film industry requires and all the strings attached to it. Photography permits
are just a cash cow to the government, and it’s time ALL photographers voice out against being victimized by our
government. We are NOT wallets to be tapped at whim. Some suggest we be taxed reasonably like fisherman or hunters.
But even that is soooo ridiculous, we are being taxed for photographing nature, without exhausting its resources.
It is a sad, sad day when we are nothing more than wallets to our government.

Voice out, you can write to the department of interior individually or as a group…
www.doi.gov/contact.html

DO SOMETHING…

Fact:
Anyone who enters a national park is already paying an entrance fee.

City beaches already have photography permit requirements in the tripple digits, as well as
insurace requirements in the million dollar category. The same thing can be expected to happen now at National
parks unless photographers unite and do something.

This basically walls out small and independent shooters from
even attempting anything entrepreneurial. (commentary: I guess only rich people can have their portraits taken at
the beach by rich photographers--so much for equality).

Comments appreciated.
(not all of these are B/W)

Technical details
I used Kodak Professional Ultra Color 100 speed film which is really vibrant, for some I used Kodak Professional b/w 400 c-41 process. It is a b/w that you process like color and that gives a very slight off temperature coloration tho the b/w. makes them less blue.
For equipment I used a Cannon Rebel 2000 a 28-80mm lens with a phoenix fisheye lens adapter. The adjustable telephoto with the fisheye adapter works backwards...at 28 it is very flat but at 80 it is super bowled out. So you have complete control over your distortion. I had an assistant bounce gold light from a reflector on the subjects in bright sunshine, so that I could use a large Fstop (smaller hole) to get the deep focal distance. Then I smeared a small small amount of vaseline around the edges of a polarizing filter mounted on the fisheye adapter. the natural distortion from the fisheye thru the filter w/the large fstop causes a long but narrow focal range. More like the human eye sees than a regular camera (wide but short focus). For some I did exactly the opposite.
I shot with a pentax asahi manual with a asahi 1:2 50 mm lens .I cranked up the shutter speed so that I would have to use the smallest fstop (largest aperture) so that the focal distance would be a few inches deep.
I did the same thing with a polarizing filter and vaseline smeared strategical and a little clean up in photoshop. Viola

Know of a place to shoot some discreet work (indoors, but if you know of a great outdoor location, I'll be looking for those for the warmer weather as well)? Hoping to find a place between Oakland and Milpitas, and out to Pleasanton (hoping closer to Oakland). Possibility of shooting in San Francisco as well. I know the hotels, etc. but those are so boring for backgrounds, etc. Looking for a place to shoot, and will need to shoot for about 2-3 hours. Well lit, and of course it needs electrical for the equipment, etc. Can't afford too much - this is a shoot for her website and she's not raking in the money yet.

But perhaps the best part of registering for Zannel Fest, in addition to prizes, is that you’ll also be (if you want!) one of the very first users of an almost launched content sharing network that encompasses mobile phones, the Internet, and possibly a device that hasn't been invented yet, like the PK-109 Video Helmet.

Thu May 25, 10:08 AM ET

TOKYO - Japan's top camera maker, Canon Inc., will stop developing new single-lens reflex film cameras as more people abandon film for digital, company officials said Thursday.

The Tokyo-based Canon's move followed a similar move by its closest Japanese rival, Nikon Corp., which announced earlier this year it would stop making seven of its nine film cameras and concentrate on digital models.

Canon will continue making film cameras already on the market as long as their demand remains. Whether to withdraw from the film camera business will be "decided appropriately by judging the market situation," said Canon spokesman Hiroshi Yoshinaga.

Japanese camera makers sold a combined total 64.77 million digital cameras last year globally, compared with 5.38 million film cameras, according to industry figures. Yoshinaga said his company could not disclose the number of cameras sold.

Meanwhile, Tsuneji Uchida, president of Canon, told reporters that demand for film cameras will be limited to "special needs" like camera buffs, Kyodo News agency said.

In January, Konica Minolta Holdings Inc., another Japanese optical manufacturer, said it was quitting the camera business altogether — digital and film — and selling its digital assets to rival Sony Corp

i have a canon Eos 10s which is dying and am looking to buy a new (used) camera.
I am not interested in most of the custom functions or pre-set modes that Eos offers. What I am after is a sturdy camera that I can use manually , which is not too large or heavy (smaller than the Eos 10 would be great), easy to focus and use manually.
and i can't afford a Leica...
Any suggestions of models would be well appreciated (canon would be nice but not crucial,as i have two lenses)!

Interesting...

Digital camera blocking technology created

ATLANTA, June 19 (UPI) -- Georgia Institute of Technology scientists say they've created a prototype device that can block digital video cameras from working in a specific area.

The scientists say the prototype -- which could be used to stymie unwanted use of video or still cameras -- uses off-the-shelf equipment to scan for, find and neutralize digital cameras. The system works by looking for the reflectivity and shape of the image-producing sensors used in digital cameras.

Associate GIT Professor Gregory Abowd, who led the study, says the camera-neutralizing technology shows commercial promise in two principal fields -- protecting areas against espionage photography and stopping video copying.

Researchers explain a digital camera's image sensor -- called a CCD -- sends light back directly to its origin rather than scattering it, making it relatively easy to detect and identify video cameras.

Once a scanning laser and photo-detector located a video camera, the system would flash a thin beam of visible white light directly at the CCD, overwhelming the target camera with light and rendering recorded video unusable.

A paper on the technology, which is still under development, was presented during the Ubicomp conference in Tokyo last September.

Nikon Plans to Stop Making Most Cameras That Use Film
By MARTIN FACKLER

TOKYO, Thursday, Jan. 12 - The Nikon Corporation, the Japanese camera maker, said Thursday that it would stop making most of its film cameras and lenses in order to focus on digital cameras.

The company, based in Tokyo, is the latest to join an industrywide shift toward digital photography, which has exploded in popularity. Rivals like Kodak and Canon have already shifted most of their camera production into digital products.

Nikon said it would halt production of all but two of its seven film cameras and would also stop making most lenses for those cameras. The company will halt production of the film camera models "one by one," though it refused to specify when.

A company spokesman said Nikon made the decision because sales of film cameras have plunged. In the most recent fiscal year ended March 2005, Nikon said that film camera bodies accounted for 3 percent of the 180 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in sales at the company's camera and imaging division. That is down from 16 percent the previous year.

By contrast, sales of digital cameras have soared, the company said, jumping to 75 percent of total sales in the year ended March 2005, from 47 percent three years earlier. Scanners and other products account for the remainder of the division's sales.

"The market for film cameras has been shrinking dramatically," the company spokesman, Akira Abe, said. "Digital cameras have become the norm."

Mr. Abe said the announcement might trigger a brief revival in sales of film cameras, as film photography buffs rush to buy the cameras before production stops. The decision may also help make film cameras a popular nostalgia item in second-hand markets like eBay.

Nikon made its first film camera in 1948, as Japan rose from the ashes of defeat in World War II.

The quality and durability of Nikon's film cameras made them popular for decades among amateurs and professionals alike, turning Nikon into one of the industry's best-known brands. The first Nikon cameras arrived in the United States in the 1950's when American servicemen started bringing them home from tours of duty at American bases in Japan.

But in recent years, all brands of film cameras have virtually disappeared from store shelves.

Digital photography has won out because its images are visible immediately and are easily stored on tiny computer chips, eliminating the need to carry and develop clunky rolls of film.

Hello fellow photographers,

I'm cross-posting this on all of the major photo tribes, so forgive me if you see it a bunch.

<o> Photography and Zen <o> is a tribe dedicated to the ways that photographs impact our lives. This tribe is mostly for serious picture takers, but I've also invited snapshot takers, models, and people who don't know the front end of a camera from the back. We sometimes lose site of the non-photographers, butwithout them, we wouldn't have anyone to show our pictures to!

There are plenty of photo sites on Tribe that talk about the technical side, but photography is much more than that. Millions of pictures are taken every second. We inadvertently see hundreds of photos every day. They're a major part of modern society.

Some of the topics will be:

• The ethics of candid shots
• Becoming one with your subject
• Representing yourself as a photographer with regard to other photographers
• What photo buyers look for in an image
• The significance of photography as an art form
• Photography as an instrument to bring about social change
• Critique of images
• The UNtechnical techniques (such as knowing your instrument enough that it becomes second nature thus enabling you to lose yourself in your art -- stuff like that)
• Erotica vs. porn
• And anything else you want to talk about

So come on by and share your thoughts and/or images.

<o> Photography and Zen <o>
so i've been photographing for around 10 years now. i'm a basic equipment type of guy. not into a million different settings and special effects and all the bullshit. lately i've been interested in purchasing one of those cameras with the pop up flashes though. i'm attracted to them for the ease of use and the ability to take a quick photo on the fly without having to manually set everything. is there a durable, full bodied camera with such a flash (preferably nikon) that you can suggest? to see what kind of work i do you can check my website www.joeneff.com.

Its my main concern w/ a digital camera is being able to take true BW images, from what I understand most of them take color and then digitally convert to BW or else you have to convert yourself in photoshop type software. I am really looking to try and find something where I can just shoot in BW. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello - i just joined this tribe because i realized that it's a "mature" tribe, and on 12/20 it will be made private and i won't be able to find it anymore! are there any plans to un-mature the tribe and keep it public?

in case you are wondering what i am talking about, here's the letter sent out to moderators of mature tribes:

Hi,

We wanted to drop a note to everybody who currently moderates a “Mature” tribe, because of these important changes coming up on December 20th:

1) We’re implementing Community Flagging. To ensure that all posts are respectful, and to respond to concerns from our users about some of the content on the site being offensive, we’re going to allow members to flag content (photos and listings) for removal. In our judgment, it’s likely that at least some of the photos in the Mature tribe(s) you currently moderate will be flagged for removal by other tribe.net members.

2) We’re updating our Terms of Use (“TOU”). This update is to reflect changes in the legal environment facing us and our members. In particular, posting content that portrays obscenity, pornography, or sexually explicit conduct is for practical purposes illegal for members like ours under U.S. federal law. So it will be prohibited in our TOU, and we will drop the “Mature” designation from your tribe and sitewide.

3) If your tribe currently has “public” status, we’ll be switching it to “private” status on 12/20. This means that only invited members will be able to see any content in it, and any links to content inside the tribe will only work if the user is already a member of your tribe. It also means your tribe will not appear in search results. We’re making the switch for you to give you time to remove all the content that’s in violation of the new TOU. (As a moderator, you will always have the option down the road of switching the status back to public).

What to do now: we suggest you remove all photos that you think are likely to be considered in violation of the new TOU. When you’re done with that, and only then, go to the Manage Tribe page and change the Mature category for your tribe from Mature to whatever seems most appropriate. Doing this now may save you a lot of work down the road, but it is only an option to you before 12/20.

Tribe will always depend on great moderators for remaining a great service, and so we’re grateful for your help as we all go through these changes. If you have questions, we’ll be discussing this online at moderators.tribe.net and tribeideas.tribe.net

Thanks,

Wade Lagrone
VP Marketing, Tribe.net
www.tribe.net/template/pub%2CAbout.vm

P.S. If you have so many photos to remove that it’s a big chore, let us know and we’ll figure out a way to help.

Platinum/Palladium Printing
OAK 2038
Instructor: William Laven
Fri., 7–10 p.m., December 16
Sat. and Sun., 9 a.m.–5 p.m., December 17 and 18
3 sessions. $190; $15 materials fee payable to instructor at first session. Noncredit.
Prerequisite: black and white darkroom experience helpful
Enrollment limit: 6.

Platinum and palladium prints are known and admired for many reasons, among them a long, rich, and delicate tonal scale and unmatched archival quality. What might be a monochromatic black on a silver print, for example, is rendered as a series of subtly differentiated shadow tones on a Pt/Pd print. This course teaches students how to print with these two nonsilver processes. It also includes presentations on how to make both original and enlarged negatives of the correct density and contrast range for contact printing with platinum and palladium. Due to the small size of the class, students are guaranteed individual attention. Materials fee covers all necessary supplies. Bring to first class: 4" x 5" negatives, if you have them; if not, the instructor will loan negatives.
