Ezekiel 38 through 39 tells of a future invasion of Israel by a vast coalition of nations that surround it. As we read the headlines in the newspapers of today, and witness the conflict in the Middle East, it's not hard to imagine that this invasion prophesied over 2600 years ago, could be fulfilled in our lifetime. Ezekiel 36-37 predicts a gathering of the Jews to the nation of Israel, which will be followed by this massive invasion. For 19 centuries the Jewish people were scattered throughout the world, and until May 14, 1948 there was no nation of Israel to invade. With the nation of Israel now a reality, the stage seems set for the war that will usher in the tribulation and the rise of the Antichrist; a war that will end with the destruction of Israel's enemies by God Himself, and lead to the signing of a peace treaty with the Antichrist.
As you read Ezekiel 38 and 39, it isn't just the creation of the nation of Israel that makes this prophecy seem likely to be fulfilled in the near future. The nations that God tells us will form this coalition against Israel seem more likely now than perhaps ever before to form just such an alliance. To understand the prophecies of Ezekiel about this future invasion, it's important to understand who the players will be.
There are many theories as to who will join in this future invasion of Israel. Before going through a list of the individual nations, I'll list some of the more common theories you'll hear when studying the prophecies from Ezekiel 38.
Ezekiel 38:1-6 The word of the Lord came to me; Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; prophesy against him and say: 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army - your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords. Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops - the many nations with you.'
1. Hashemite Kingdom Theory: The Islamic Nations will come against Israel either by an Iraqi-led, Jordanian led, or Turkish led coalition. The enemy from the north refers to the areas of Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. These Islamic nations make up the lands occupied by Magog, Gomer, Togarmah, Meshech and Tubal.
2. Caucus Theory: Gog and Magog are the Arab nations in an alliance with the Muslim republics of the former Soviet Union. This theory leaves out most of Russia, and includes only the southern part.
3. All Europe theory: Gog and Magog are the sons of Japeth thus the originators of the European races. Gog and Magog therefore indicates all of Europe. This is not a widely held theory and I could find little support for it.
4. Russian Theory: The Hebrew word 'rosh' in verse 3 is identified with Russia, 'Tubal' with Tiblisi or Tobolsk and 'Meshech' with Moscow, therefore Gog and Magog refers to Russia. This is one of the most commonly held views and is based on a different interpretation of the Hebrew word Rosh (used as a noun rather than adjective), similarities in the pronunciation of words, and the Greek translation of Rosh referring to a tribe of people found in what is now Russia.
5. Indo-European Theory: Gog and Magog include the nations descending from Japheth: Russia, the Caucasus(Turkey), Iraq, and the Islamic republics of Central Asia. The coalition is an alliance of Arab nations, Muslim republics, Georgia, southern Russia and the Black sea area.
These are some of the theories you will find if you do any research into the prophecies of Ezekiel 38. You may also find interpretations that are a combination of these, and in fact, I tend to find more evidence for a version of the Indo-European and Caucacus Theory.
Before looking at the participants of this invasion in more detail, it's important to understand that the war described in Ezekiel 38 is not the same as the war that will come at the end of the tribulation when Jesus returns to defeat the Antichrist and establish his millennial kingdom. How do we know this? The war at the end of the tribulation, known as Armageddon, is a world war. Revelation tells us that this battle will involve all nations. The war described in Ezekiel includes specific nations that invade Israel. Also, Armageddon is at the climax of the tribulation, while the war described in Ezekiel comes well before then.
Ezekiel 38:1-7 gives 10 names as participants in the invasion of Israel that will follow the regathering of the Jews to their homeland. First mentioned, is the land of Magog. The most common identity for Magog is in Central Asia. The Jewish historian Josephus said, "Magog founded the Magogians, called Scythians by the Greeks. Scythians were a nomadic tribe who inhabited the ancient territory from Central Asia across the southern part of ancient Russia." Today this area is inhabited by the former Soviet Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and possibly northern parts of Afghanistan. All of these nations that make up the land of Magog have one thing in common - Islam. Militant Islam has been on the rise in these countries since the fall of the Soviet Union, when Islam no longer had to be practiced secretly. Radical Islamic groups such as the Islamic Renaissance Party, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islam are working to reunite central Asian nations and ultimately the entire Muslim world. It is from this part of the world that a leader will arise to bring together a great coalition of nations to invade Israel.
Probably the most debated verse is Ezekiel 38:3. There are two main views on the identity of the Nations God is referring to in this verse. I'll list both here, and let the reader decide which sounds most reasonable.
Rosh as Russia
Some versions of the Bible translate the Hebrew word 'rosh' in verse 3 as a noun referring to a place in Russia. The least credible support for this view is that Rosh sounds like the modern-day name Russia and Meshech sounds like Moscow. In this translation they treat rosh as a proper name. The Greek translation translates Rosh as the proper name Ros. Because the ancient Sarmations were known as the Ras, Rashu, and Rus and inhabited Rasapu which is now Southern Russia, some feel this verse points to Russia as the prince of Rosh. Another support sited for this view is that verse 6 and 15 say the invasion will come from remote parts of the north, and Russia is more remote.
Rosh as chief
Other versions of the Bible translate 'rosh' as an adjective. The argument here is that in the Massoretic text the words 'chief prince' carry the accents Tiphha and Zaqeph-gadol. The Tiphha appears under the resh of the Hebrew word 'rosh'; the Zaqeph-gadol appears on top of the sin of the Hebrew word 'nish'. The Tiphha to the right, underneath the initial consonant of the world 'rosh', or chief, is prepositive and does not mark the tone syllable. The world 'nish' or prince has the accent Zaqeph-gadol which is disjunctive and indicates a pause. So, verse three would read:
"Behold, I am against thee, o Gog, the prince, {pause} chief of Meshech and Tubal"
Rather than:
"Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal."
Here 'rosh' is translated head or chief as it is 423 other times in the Old Testament.
In short, if you believe 'rosh' should be translated as a proper noun you may find the interpretation that Russia will be a part of this coalition more reasonable. If you believe 'rosh' should be an adjective here, you need only concern yourself with who Meshech and Tubal are. I tend to have a problem with the "it sounds like Russia" theory, and find the translation of rosh as an adjective more believable, but to each his own.
Meshech and Tubal in verses 2 and 6, were the names of the 6th and 5th sons of Japheth, the son of Noah (Gen. 10:2). Ezekiel 27:13 also mentions Meshech and Tubal as trading partners with Tyre (Modern Lebanon). It's likely that Meshech and Tubal refer to the ancient Moshi/Mushki and Tubalu/Tibareni who dwelled in the area around, primarily south of, the Black and Caspian Sea in Ezekiel's day. Today these nations would be in the modern country of Turkey, parts of Southern Russia and Northern Iran. All areas with a Muslim majority.
Verse 6 adds Gomer and Beth-Togarmah to the coalition. "Gomer" was the first son of Japheth. The Gomerites were the ancient Cimmerians, expelled in 700 B.C. from the southern steppes of Russia into what is today Turkey. "Togarmah" is the 3rd son of Gomer and beth at the beginning of the name is the Hebrew word for 'house' or 'place of'. In Ezekiel's time there was a city in Cappodocia (Modern Turkey) known as Tegarma, Tagarma, Til-garimmu, and Takarama.
The possibility that four of the names mentioned in Ezekiel are now in Turkey makes a pretty strong argument for Turkey being a part of the invasion of Israel. Current circumstances in that country also lend this view some credibility. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Turkey has been gaining inroads into Central Asia (Magog). It is also linked to Central Asia both ethnically and linguistically, and has a growing number of political parties that support opposition to Israel, establishment of a Turkish Islamic Republic, and the worldwide rule of Islam.
Verse 5 brings three more names into the mix. God tells us that "Persia, Cush and Put will be with them".
Persia is a pretty easy one. In 539 B.C. the Persians conquered the city of Babylon. You only need look at a map of the ancient Persian Empire to see that it was centered in the nation known today as Iran. In fact Iran was called Persia until 1935 when it was changed to Iran and then to the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979 during the Iranian Revolution. It's no secret that Iran is an archenemy of Israel and the West, and a supporter of the Palestinians. They are actively working to get other Arab countries to change camps in their cooperation with the U.S. and Israel.
The ancient kingdom of Cush in Ezekiels time was the land just south of Egypt on the Nile River. Today this land is occupied by Sudan. Sudan is home to the National Islamic Front, is ruled by an Islamic military dictatorship, a strong supporter of Iraq, home to Osama bin Landen from 1991-1996, and harbors countless Islamic terrorist groups. Sudan would easily fit into the coalition as it is already close allies with Iran, trading military supplies for docking rights on the Red Sea shipping routes.
Ancient Put was the land just west of Egypt, or what is today Libya. Libya is another sponsor of terrorism, and openly refuses to recognize Israel's right to even exist. When the coalition against Israel is formed, Libya won't have to be asked twice to join.
Verse 6 adds "and many people with you." The nations listed specifically are all somewhat distant from Israel. By adding "and many people with you", God may have been indicating that those nations and peoples in closer proximity to Israel will join the Jihad. Other nations that might join the alliance are Iraq, Syria, Jordon, and Egypt. All of them are Islamic nations, and all of them would not hesitate to support the destruction of Israel were the opportunity to join such a vast coalition presented to them.
Below is a list of the nations that are listed in Ezekiel as Israel's last-days enemies:

Other Islamic nations
Possibly Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt
The reasons God gives us for the enemies' invasion of Israel are further proof that the attack will be an Islamic invasion.
The first reason God gives for the invasion in Ezekiel 38 is a desire by the coalition to cover the Jewish land and wipe them off the face of the earth. Urged on by a hatred of the Jewish people they will seek to destroy them and the nation of Israel. This is the stated goal today of almost every Islamic nation in the Middle East. The only nations not currently in a declared state of war with Israel are Egypt, Turkey, and Jordan, yet they would certainly be glad to see Israel eliminated if presented with a willing leader and an opportunity to rid the Middle East of Islam's archenemy.
God tells us that they also come to "seize plunder…and to capture great spoil". Many verses in the Quran advocated plundering for the benefit of Islam and there are several instances of this war tactic throughout the history of Muhammad's life. In fact, it is a common theme in his teachings.
This invasion of Israel and attack on the Jewish people will indeed be a Jihad, but it will also be the final Jihad.
Ezekiel 38:13 "Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish with all its villages will say to you, 'Have you come to capture spoil? Have you assembled your company to seize plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to capture great spoil?'"
As this invasion develops, a few countries will make a lame protest. This isn't hard to believe when you look at the indifference most nations display as Israel is repeatedly attacked by terrorists.
The specific nations who question Gog's actions are "Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish". Sheba and Dedan are not hard to identify. These were ancient names for what is known today as Saudi Arabia.
Tarshish is most commonly agreed to be ancient Tartessus or the area of present day Spain in Western Europe. In Ezekiels day, Tarshish was in the farthest west regions of the known world. By referring to Tarshish and all her merchants, Ezekiel could have been indicating that Western Europe will join with Saudi Arabia in denouncing the invasion. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia is the only Arab nation to consistently side with the West against radical Islamic elements around the world. The royals of Saudi Arabia mostly side with the West out of an interest in self preservation, and at times oppose us behind the scenes, but they would most probably put on a show of opposition to radical Islam in order to maintain the support of western governments.
A similar alliance has been seen once before during the Gulf War of the early 1990's. The U.S., Western Europe, and Saudi Arabia were allied against Iraq, while Russia, Iran, Sudan, Libya, and most other Middle East nations either aligned with Iraq, or against the U.S. either by directly opposing it, or by remaining neutral.
The good news is that God wins. God will come against the invaders Himself and destroy them. Verses 19-20 say that there will be an earthquake so great that people all over the world will tremble. In the ensuing chaos, nations will begin to turn on each other. The confusion will lead to the largest case of death by friendly fire ever seen.
Verse 22 of Ezekiel tells us that there will be plagues, torrents of rain, hailstones, and burning sulfur. Just as God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, he will destroy these invading forces. Once again, God will make it known to all the nations that He is the Lord. He will give the nations proof that He is the Holy One in Israel.
This war against Israel will pave the way for the Antichrist's military rule over the world and his demand that the world worship him as God. With Islam defeated and the Christian Church raptured, opposition to worshipping a man as God will be greatly reduced. Those who are left would have no army with which to mount much of a protest.
So, how should Christians respond to this prophecy? In Ezekiel 39:6,7, and 28 God says that this end-times battle will happen that "they will know that I am the Lord". This message that God's purpose is to cause Israel and the other nations to know He is Lord is repeated over 60 times in Ezekiel. By learning about prophecy and teaching it to others, people will be able to see the glory, majesty, and sovereignty of God in the fulfillment of His divine word. By knowing our Bible and teaching it to others, they will be able to see that there is a divine creator, and a plan for them. Through Jesus Christ and the salvation he offers us freely, there is victory and an eternity more glorious than they can imagine.

Ezekiel 37:1 Eze 37:1
CHAPTER XXXVII
This chapter treats of the same subject with the preceding, in
a beautiful and significant vision. Under the emblem of the
open valley being thickly strewed with very dry bones is
represented the hopeless state of the Jews when dispersed
throughout the provinces of the Chaldean empire. But God,
contrary to every human probability, restores these bones to
life, thereby prefiguring the restoration of that people from
the Babylonish captivity, and their resettlement in the land of
their forefathers, 1-14.
The prophet then makes an easy and elegant transition to the
blessedness of the people of God under the Gospel dispensation,
in the plenitude of its manifestation, when the genuine
converts to Christianity, the spiritual Israel, shall be no
longer under the domination of heathen and anti-christian
rulers, but shall be collected together into one visible
kingdom, and constitute but one flock under one Shepherd, 15-28.
The vision of the dry bones reviving is considered by some as
having a remote view to the general resurrection.
NOTES ON CHAP. XXXVII
Verse 1. The hand of the Lord was upon me] The prophetic influence was communicated.
And carried me out in the spirit] Or, And the Lord brought me out in the spirit; that is, a spiritual vision, in which all these things were doubtless transacted.
The valley which was full of bones] This vision of the dry bones was designed, first, as an emblem of the then wretched state of the Jews; secondly, of the general resurrection of the body.
Ezekiel 37:3 Eze 37:3
Verse 3. Can these bones live?] Is it possible that the persons whose bones these are can return to life?
Ezekiel 37:4 Eze 37:4
Verse 4. Prophesy upon these bones]; Declare to your miserable countrymen the gracious designs of the Lord; show them that their state, however deplorable, is not hopeless.
Ezekiel 37:5 Eze 37:5
Verse 5. Behold, I will cause breath] xwr ruach signifies both soul, breath, and wind; and sometimes the Spirit of God. Soul is its proper meaning in this vision, where it refers to the bones: "I will cause the SOUL to enter into you
Ezekiel 37:6 Eze 37:6
Verse 6. I will lay sinews upon you] Observe the progress: 1. Here are the bones. 2. The ligaments, called here sinews, are to be added in order to unite the bones, that the skeleton might be complete. 3. The flesh (the whole muscular system, the subjacent and superjacent muscles, including the arterial and venous system) clothes this skeleton. 4. The skin (the dermis and epidermis, or cutis and cuticle) envelopes the whole of these muscles or flesh; and now these bodies are in the state that the body of Adam was before it received the animal and intellectual principle from God. 5. There was no breath in them-they had not yet received their souls. 6. The wind, xwr ruach, the soul, came into them. They were endued with animal and intellectual life; and they arose and evidenced a complete restoration to life, and began to perform its functions, Eze 37:10.
Ezekiel 37:9 Eze 37:9
Verse 9. Prophesy unto the wind] xwr ruach. Address thyself to the soul, and command it to enter into these well-organized bodies, that they may live.
Come from the four winds] SOULS, come from all parts where ye are scattered; and reanimate these bodies from; which ye have been so long separated. The four winds signify all parts-in every direction. Literally it is, "Souls, come from the four souls;" "Breath, come from the four breaths;" or, "Wind, come from the four winds." But here xwr ruach has both of its most general meanings, wind or breath, and soul.
Ezekiel 37:11 Eze 37:11
Verse 11. These bones are the whole house of Israel] That is, their state is represented by these bones; and their restoration to their own land is represented by the revivification of these bones.
It is said that this was fulfilled when Isreal re-occupied the state after WWII
Ezekiel 37:12 Eze 37:12
Verse 12. I will open your graves] Here is a pointed allusion to the general resurrection; a doctrine properly credited and understood by the Jews, and to which our Lord refers, Joh 5:25,28,29: "The hour is coming when they that are in their graves shall hear his voice, and come forth."
And cause you to come up out of your graves] I am determined that ye shall be restored; so that were ye even in your graves, as mankind at the general resurrection, yet my all-powerful voice shall call you forth.
Ezekiel 37:13 Eze 37:13
Verse 13. When I have opened your graves] When I shall have done for you what was beyond your hope, and deemed impossible, then shall ye know that I am Jehovah.
Ezekiel 37:14 Eze 37:14
Verse 14. And shall put my Spirit] yxwr ruchi. Here xwr ruach is taken for the Holy Ghost. They were living souls, animal and intellectual beings, when they had received their souls, as mentioned above: but they could only become spiritual, holy, and obedient creatures by the Spirit of God actuating their spirits. See the notes on Eze 36:25-27.
THREE degrees or processes have been remarked in this mystic vision. When the prophet was commanded to prophesy-to foretell, on the authority of God, that there should be a restoration to their own land,-
1. There was a noise, which was followed by a general shaking, during which the bones became arranged and united.
2. The flesh and skin came upon them, so that the dry bones were no longer seen.
3. The spirit or soul came into them, and they stood up perfectly vivified.
Perhaps these might be illustrated by three periods of time, which marked the regeneration of the Jewish polity.
1. The publication of the edict of Cyrus in behalf of the Jews, which caused a general shaking or stir among the people, so that the several families began to approach each other. and prepare for their return to Judea, Ezr 1:2,3. But though partially restored, they were obliged to discontinue the rebuilding of their temple.
2. The edict published by Darius in the second year of his reign, Ezr 4:23,24, which removed the impediments thrown in the way of the Jews. Ezr 6:6,7, &c.
3. The mission of Nehemiah, with orders from Artaxerxes to complete the building of the temple and the city, Ne 2:7, &c. Then the Jews became a great army, and found themselves in sufficient force to defend themselves and city against all their enemies.
As to the spiritual uses of this curious vision, I must leave them to preachers. I have given the literal meaning, and what the different parts refer to; and if they found their observations on these, they may profit their hearers.
Ezekiel 37:16 Eze 37:16
Verse 16. Son of man, take thee one stick] The two sticks mentioned in this symbolical transaction represented, as the text declares, the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah, which vere formed in the days of Rehoboam, and continued distinct till the time of the captivity. The kingdom of Judah was composed of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, with the Levites; all the rest went off in the schism with Jeroboam, and formed the kingdom of Israel. Though some out of those tribes did rejoin themselves to Judah, yet no whole tribe ever returned to that kingdom. Common sufferings in their captivity became the means of reviving a kinder feeling; and to encourage this, God promises that he will reunite them, and restore them to their own land; and that there shall no more be any divisions or feuds among them. To represent this in such a way as would make it a subject of thought, reflection, and inquiry, the prophet is ordered to take the two sticks mentioned above, to write on them the distinguishing names of the divided kingdoms, and then by a notch, dovetail, glue, or some such method, to unite them both before the people. He did so, and on their inquiry, showed them the full meaning of this symbolical action.
Ezekiel 37:19 Eze 37:19
Verse 19. The stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim] Jeroboam, the first king of the ten tribes, was an Ephraimite. Joseph represents the ten tribes in general; they were in the hand of Ephraim, that is, under the government of Jeroboam.
Ezekiel 37:22 Eze 37:22
Verse 22. I will make them one nation] There was no distinction after the return from Babylon.
And one king shall be king to them all] Politically speaking they never had a king from that day to this; and the grand junction and government spoken of here must refer to another time-to that in which they shall be brought into the Christian Church with the fulness of the Gentiles; when JESUS, the King of kings and Lord of lords, shall rule over all.
Ezekiel 37:24 Eze 37:24
Verse 24. And David my servant shall be King] That this refers to Jesus Christ, see proved, Eze 34:23.
Ezekiel 37:25 Eze 37:25
Verse 25. The land that I have given unto Jacob my servant] Jacob means here the twelve tribes; and the land given to them was the whole land of Palestine; consequently, the promise states that, when they return, they are to possess the whole of the Promised Land.
Ezekiel 37:26 Eze 37:26
Verse 26. Covenant of peace] See this explained Eze 34:25
Ezekiel 37:27 Eze 37:27
Verse 27. My tabernacle] Jesus Christ, the true tabernacle, in whom dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily
The first prophesy against Gog
Ezekiel 38:1 Eze 38:1
The sublime prophecy contained in this and the following
chapter relates to Israel's victory over Gog, and is very
obscure. It begins with representing a prodigious armarnent of
many nations combined together under the conduct of Gog, with
the intention of overwhelming the Jews, after having been for
some time resettled in their land subsequent to their return
from the Babylonish captivity, 1-9.
These enemies are farther represented as making themselves sure
of the spoil, 10-13.
But in this critical conjuncture when Israel, to all human
appearance, was about to be swallowed up by her enemies, God
most graciously appears, to execute by terrible judgments the
vengeance threatened against these formidable adversaries of
his people, 14-16.
The prophet, in terms borrowed from human passions, describes,
with awful emphasis, the fury of Jehovah as coming up to his
face; and the effects of it so dreadful, as to make all the
animate and inanimate creation tremble, and even to convulse
with terror the whole frame of nature, 17-23.
Ezekiel 38:2 Eze 38:2
Verse 2. Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog] This is allowed to be the most difficult prophecy in the Old Testament. It is difficult to us, because we know not the king nor people intended by it: but I am satisfied they were well known by these names in the time that the prophet wrote.
I have already remarked in the introduction {Eze 1:1} to this book that there are but two opinions on this subject that appear to be at all probable: 1. That which makes GOG Cambyses, king of Persia; and, 2. That which makes him ANTIOCHUS EPIPHANES, king of Syria. And between these two (for one or other is supposed to be the person intended) men are much divided.
Calmet, one of the most judicious commentators that ever wrote on the Bible, declares for Cambyses; and supports his opinion, in opposition to all others, by many arguments.
Mr. Mede supposes the Americans are meant who were originally colonies of the Scythians, who were descendants of Magog, son of Japheth. Houbigant declares for the Scythians, whose neighbours were the people of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, that is the Russians, Muscovites, and Tybareni or Cappadocians. Several eminent critics espouse this opinion. Rabbi David Kimchi says the Christians and Turks are meant: and of later opinions there are several, founded in the ocean of conjecture. Calmet says expressly, that GOG is Cambyses, king of Persia, who on his return from the land of Egypt, died in Judea. The Rev. David Martin, pastor of the Waloon church at Utrecht, concludes, after examining all previous opinions, that Antiochus Epiphanes, the great enemy of the Israelites, is alone intended here; and that Gog, which signifies covered, is an allusion to the well-known character of Antiochus, whom historians describe as an artful, cunning, and dissembling man. See Da 8:23,25; 11:23,27,32. Magog he supposes to mean the country of Syria. Of this opinion the following quotation from Pliny, Hist. Nat., lib. v., c. 23, seems a proof; who, speaking of Coele-Syria, says: Coele habet Apamiam Marsyia amne divisam a Nazarinorum Tetrarchia. Bambycem quam alio nomine Hierapolis vocatur, Syris vero Magog. "Coele-Syria has Apamia separated from the tetrarchy of the Nazarenes by the river Marsyia; and Bambyce, otherwise called Hierapolis; but by the Syrians, MAGOG."
I shall at present examine the text by this latter opinion.
Chief prince of Meshech and Tubal] These probably mean the auxiliary forces, over whom Antiochus was supreme; they were the Muscovites and Cappadocians.
Ezekiel 38:4 Eze 38:4
Verse 4. I will turn thee back] Thy enterprise shall fail.
Ezekiel 38:5 Eze 38:5
Verse 5. Persia] That a part of this country was tributary to Antiochus, see 1Macc 3:31.
Ethiopia, and Libya] That these were auxiliaries of Antiochus is evident from Da 11:43: "The Libyans and Ethiopians shall be at his steps."
Ezekiel 38:6 Eze 38:6
Verse 6. Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah] The Cimmerians and Turcomanians, and other northern nations.-Calmet.
Ezekiel 38:8 Eze 38:8
Verse 8. In the latter years thou shalt come] This was fulfilled about four hundred years after.-Martin. The expedition of Cambyses against Egypt was about twelve years after the return of the Jews from Babylon.-Calmet.
Ezekiel 38:9 Eze 38:9
Verse 9. Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm] It is observable that Antiochus is thus spoken of by Daniel, Da 11:40: The king of the north-Antiochus, shall come against him (the king of the south is the king of Egypt) like a whirlwind.
Ezekiel 38:10 Eze 38:10
Verse 10. Shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought] Antiochus purposed to invade and destroy Egypt, as well as Judea; see Da 11:31,32,36. This Calmet interprets of Cambyses, his cruelties in Egypt, and his evil design to destroy the Israelites.
Ezekiel 38:12 Eze 38:12
Verse 12. To take a spoil-and a prey] When Antiochus took Jerusalem he gave the pillage of it to his soldiers, and spoiled the temple of its riches, which were immense. See Joseph. WAR, B. i. c. 1.
Ezekiel 38:13 Eze 38:13
Verse 13. Sheba, and Dedan] The Arabians, anciently great plunderers; and Tarshish, the inhabitants of the famous isle of Tartessus, the most noted merchants of the time. They are here represented as coming to Antiochus before he undertook the expedition, and bargaining for the spoils of the Jews. Art thou come to take a spoil, to carry away silver and gold, cattle and goods?
Ezekiel 38:16 Eze 38:16
Verse 16. When I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog] By the defeat of his troops under Lysias, his general. 1Mac 3:32, 33, &c., and Eze 6
Ezekiel 38:17 Eze 38:17
Verse 17. Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time] This prophecy concerning Antiochus and the Jews was delievered about four hundred years before the events took place.-Martin. Calmet maintains that Cambyses is spoken of, and refers to ancient prophecies, especially Isa. xiv., xv., xx., xxi.
Ezekiel 38:21 Eze 38:21
Verse 21. I will call for a sword against him] Meaning Judas Maccabeus, who defeated his army under Lysias, making a horrible carnage.-Martin. Cambyses had no wars in the mountains of Israel.
Ezekiel 38:22 Eze 38:22
Verse 22. Great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.] These are probably figurative expressions, to signify that the whole tide of the war should be against him, and that his defeat and slaughter should be great. Abp. Newcome supposes all the above prophecy remains yet to be fulfilled. Where such eminent scribes are divided, who shall decide!
some say this bears a strange resemblence to Nuclear war
The second prophesy against Gog
Ezekiel 39:1 Eze 39:1
CHAPTER XXXIX
The prophet goes on to denounce the Divine judgments against
Gog and his army, 1-7;
and describes their dreadful slaughter, 8-10,
and burial, 11-16,
in terms so very lofty and comprehensive, as must certainly
denote some very extraordinary interposition of Providence in
behalf of the Jews. And to amplify the matter still more, the
prophet, with peculiar art and propriety, delays the summoning
of all the birds and beasts of prey in nature to feast on the
slain, (in allusion to the custom of feasting on the remainder
of sacrifices,) till after the greater multitudes are buried;
to intimate that even the remainder, and as it were the
stragglers of such mighty hosts, would be more than sufficient
to satisfy their utmost rapacity, 17-20.
The remaining verses contain a prediction of the great
blessedness of the people of God in Gospel times, and of the
stability of the kingdom of Christ, 21-29.
It will be proper to remark that the great northern expedition
against the natural Israel, described in this and the preceding
chapter, is, from its striking resemblance in the main
particulars, put by the writer of the Apocalypse,
(Eze 20:7-10,)
for a much more formidable armament of a multitude of nations
in the four quarters of the earth against the pure Christian
Church, the MYSTICAL Israel; an event still extremely remote,
and which it is thought shall immediately precede the
destruction of the world by fire, and the general judgment.
Ezekiel 39:2 Eze 39:2
Verse 2. And leave but the sixth part of thee] The margin has, strike thee with six plagues; or, draw thee back with a hook of six teeth.
Ezekiel 39:3 Eze 39:3
Verse 3. I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand] The Persians whom Antiochus had in his army, Eze 38:5, were famous as archers, and they may be intended here. The bow is held by the left hand; the arrow is pulled and discharged by the right.
Ezekiel 39:6 Eze 39:6
Verse 6. I will send a fire on Magog] On Syria. I will destroy the Syrian troops.
And among them that dwell carelessly in the isles] The auxiliary troops that came to Antiochus from the borders of the Euxine Sea.-Martin.
Ezekiel 39:7 Eze 39:7
Verse 7. In the midst of my people Israel] This defeat of Gog is to be in Israel: and it was there according to this prophecy, that the immense army of Antiochus was so completely defeated.
And I will not let them pollute my holy name any more] See on 1Macc 1:11, &c., how Antiochus had profaned the temple, insulted Jehovah and his worship, &c. God permitted that as a scourge to his disobedient people; but now the scourger shall be scourged, and he shall pollute the sanctuary no more.
Ezekiel 39:9 Eze 39:9
Verse 9. And shall set on fire-the weapons] The Israelites shall make bonfires and fuel of the weapons, tents, &c., which the defeated Syrians shall leave behind them, as expressive of the joy which they shall feel for the destruction of their enemies; and to keep up, in their culinary consumption, the memory of this great event.
They shall burn them with fire seven years] These may be figurative expressions, after the manner of the Asiatics, whose language abounds with such descriptions. They occur every where in the prophets. As to the number seven, it is only a certain for an indeterminate number. But as the slaughter was great, and the bows, arrows, quivers, shields, bucklers, handstaves, and spears were in vast multitudes, it must have taken a long time to gather them up in the different parts of the fields of battle, and the roads in which the Syrians had retreated, throwing away their arms as they proceeded; so there might have been a long time employed in collecting and burning them. And as all seem to have been doomed to the fire, there might have been some found at different intervals and burned, during the seven years here mentioned. Mariana, in his History of Spain, lib. xi., c. 24, says, that after the Spaniards had given that signal overthrow to the Saracens, A.D. 1212, they found such a vast quantity of lances, javelins, and such like, that they served them for four years for fuel. And probably these instruments obtained by the Israelites were used in general for culinary firewood, and might literally have served them for seven years; so that during that time they should take no wood out of the fields, nor out of the forests for the purpose of fuel, Eze 39:10.
Ezekiel 39:11 Eze 39:11
Verse 11. The valley of the passengers on the east of the sea] That is, of Gennesareth, according to the Targum. The valley near this lake or sea is called the Valley of the Passengers, because it was a great road by which the merchants and traders from Syria and other eastern countries went into Egypt; see Ge 37:17,25. See Calmet here.
There shall they bury Gog and all his multitude] Some read, "There shall they bury Gog, that is, all his multitude." Not Gog, or Antiochus himself, for he was not in this battle; but his generals, captains, and soldiers, by whom he was represented. As to Hamon-gog, we know no valley of this name but here. But we may understand the words thus: the place where this great slaughter was, and where the multitudes of the slain were buried, might be better called Hamon-gog, the valley of the multitude of God, than the valley of passengers; for so great was the carnage there, that the way of the passengers shall be stopped by it. See the text.
Ezekiel 39:12 Eze 39:12
Verse 12. And seven months] It shall require a long time to bury the dead. This is another figurative expression; which, however, may admit of a good deal of literal meaning. Many of the Syrian soldiers had secreted themselves in different places during the pursuit after the battle, where they died of their wounds, of hunger, and of fatigue; so that they were not all found and buried till seven months after the defeat of the Syrian army. This slow process of burying is distinctly related in the three following verses, and extended even to a bone, Eze 39:15; which, when it was found by a passenger, the place was marked, that the buriers might see and inter it. Seven months was little time enough for all this work; and in that country putrescency does not easily take place: the scorching winds serving to desiccate the flesh, and preserve it from decomposition.
Why would it take seven months to burry the bodies? Radiation exposser?
Ezekiel 39:17 Eze 39:17
Verse 17. Gather yourselves-to my sacrifice] This is an allusion to a custom common in the east: when a sacrifice is made, the friends and neighbours of the party sacrificing are invited to come and feast on the sacrifice.
Ezekiel 39:18 Eze 39:18
Verse 18. Ye shall-drink the blood of the princes of the earth] I need not mention the custom of the Scandinavians: they were accustomed to drink the blood of their enemies out of the skulls of the dead. But this is spoken of fowls and beasts here-rams, lambs, and goats. The feast shall be as grateful and as plenteous to the fowls and beasts, as one made of the above animals, the fattest and best of their kind, (because fed in the fertile fields of Bashan,) would be to the guests of him who makes a sacrifice.
Ezekiel 39:19 Eze 39:19
Verse 19. And ye shall eat fat-and drink blood] Who shall eat and drink, &c.? Not the Jews: though Voltaire says they ate human flesh, and are invited here by the prophet to eat the flesh and drink the blood of their enemies; which is a most unprincipled falsehood. It is the fowls and the beasts that God invites, Eze 39:17: "Speak to every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, assemble yourselves-that ye may eat flesh and drink blood;" nor are the persons altered in all these verses, Eze 39:17-20: so the assertion of Voltaire is either through brutish ignorance or Satanic malice.
Ezekiel 39:25 Eze 39:25
Verse 25. Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob] Both they and the heathen shall know that it was for their iniquity that I gave them into the hands of their enemies: and now I will redeem them from those hands in such a way as to prove that I am a merciful God, as well as a just God.
Ezekiel 39:26 Eze 39:26
Verse 26. After that they have borne their shame] After they shall have borne the punishment due to a line of conduct which is their shame and reproach, viz. idolatry.
Ezekiel 39:27 Eze 39:27
Verse 27. When I have-gathered them] Antiochus had before captured many of the Jews, and sold them for slaves; see Da 11:33.
Ezekiel 39:28 Eze 39:28
Verse 28. And have left none of then any more there.] All that chose had liberty to return; but many remained behind. This promise may therefore refer to a greater restoration, when not a Jew shall be left behind. This, the next verse intimates, will be in the Gospel dispensation.
Ezekiel 39:29 Eze 39:29
Verse 29. For I have poured out my Spirit] That is, I will pour out my Spirit; see the notes on Eze 36:25-29, where this subject is largely considered. This Spirit is to enlighten, quicken, purify, and cleanse their hearts; so that, being completely changed, they shall become God's people, and be a praise in the earth. Now, they are a proverb of reproach; then, they shall be eminently distinguished.

Mon, February 12, 2007 - 9:32 PMThe Kings of the East
Who Are They? A Fresh Perspective
Although it has been widely taught for centures by many that the "kings of the east" (as noted specifically in Revelation 16:12) are best represented by China and the Pacific Rim countries, the following careful analysis will shed new light and revelation upon this topic. yielding a different yet more cogent, comprehensive, and complete answer in light of Biblical TRUTH.
To begin with, let's examine Revelation 16:12 and Revelation 9:13-18.
Revelation 16:12
"And the sixth poured out his bowl unto the river Euphrates and its water was dried up in order that the way of the kings from the rising of the sun might be prepared."
Revelation 9:13-18
"And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar, which is before GOD, one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, 'release the four angels having been bound at the great River Euphrates.' And the four angels were loosed having been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, in order that they should kill the third (part) of men. And the number of the bodies of soldiers of the cavalry (armies of horsemen) were 200 million: I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision and the (ones) sitting on them, having breastplates fire-colored and dusky red and sulphurous; and the heads of the horses as heads of lions, and out of the mouths of them proceeds fire and smoke and sulphur. From these three plagues were killed the third (part) of men, by the fire and the smoke and the sulphur proceeding out of their mouths."
There is no instance of any angel of GOD (who has not sinned in a rebellion led by satan) ever being bound - period. These angels have stayed faithful to GOD. We are told in the Gospel accounts to "bind the strong man before we plunder his house. To "bind" implies "restriction," which is one of the authorities/keys tht GOD has also given HIS people (Matthew 16:18, Luke 13:10-18 - woman bound for 18 years by satan).
Further, the Greek tense of teh verb "binding," "dedemenous," is a perfect passive participle, accusative masculine plural. Now we can understand what has happened to these angels through a knowledge of the Greek grammar. They have been bound in the past, obviously by THE LORD, and they remain bound until a voice from the "four horns of the golden altar" in Heaven before GOD says to "release the four angels." This is quite profound, for these four angels have some horrible part to play out in the near end time events, soon to come upon the whole world.
Revelation 9:15
"And the four angels were loosed having been preapred fro the hour and day and month and year in order that they (the four angels - our reference) should kill the third of man."
The kings of the east are human. The fact that the great River Euphrates is dried up necessitates that the kings of the east will move from east to west, directly toward Israel. The kings of the east, being human, need to have the Euphrates River dried up in order to cross its border. This only makes sense since the drying up of the River would not change the status whatsoever if they wre not moving in a westward direction across the Euphrates directly towards Israel and if they were not human. Spirits do not need the river to dry up in order to cross it!
There is an evil connection between demonic spirits and the human kings of the earth. These demonic spirits draw out the kings of the whole world to battle.
Revelatoin 16:13,14
:"And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, as frogs; for they are spirits of demons doing signs, which go forth unto the kings of the whole inhabited earth, to assemble them to the war of the Great Day of GOD ALMIGHTY."
Zechariah 14:1,2
"Behold, the Day of THE LORD is coming, and your spoil shall be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem for war..."
Joel 3:2
"And I will also gather all the nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will enter into judgment with them there for MY people and for MY Heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and have divided MY Land."
A further interesting note is found in the following verses, which clearly illustrate tht the "kings of the east' are a subset of a far larger universal group of the "kings of the whole inhabited earth" that will come against GOD's Chosen People, the Jews, in Israel, in the last days.
Zechariah 14:1,2
"Behold, the Day of THE LORD is coming, and your spoil shall be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem for war..."
Please note that spirits, relative to this topic, come in two classes: guardian/territorial spirits that fight for good and represent GOD, and evil spirits that attempt to interfere and usurp authority, and degrade humans into an anti-GOD element, which also have territorial aspects. An example of each in the BIBLE would be in the Book of Daniel.
Daniel 12:1
"at that time, Michael shall stand up, the reat prince, the one standing over the sons of your people..."
Please note that the appearance of a good angel who represents GOD starting in verses 5 through 6 of the same chapter.
"...a certain man clothed in linen, whose waist was girded with gold of Uphaz. His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like torches of fire, and feet like burnished bronze in color, and the sound of his words like the voice of a multitude."
Obviously, this is an angelic spirit, definitely not a human.
Continuing, this is the one speaking to Daniel in the following:
Daniel 10:13
"but the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia."
This is an example of evl territorial spirits over lands that we have again seen in the Book of Daniel, chapter 10, verse 13. (Please note that Daniel sees this all in a vision - Daniel 10:7.)
Once again, how can we establish the identity of the "200 million" cavalry unit: men or angels? The salient point for their identification is thus: They must be an army of spirits, and evil spirits at that, for the following three reasons:
1. Humans have been given free will and are not under the control or authority of any spirit, good or evil. Free will is a gift fo GOD and part of HIS Creative Design.
2. One would be hard-pressed to quantify 200 million combat-ready horses; if this were to be taken literally, as physical horses (see below). One would be equally hard-pressed to quantify this as military-grade tanks and aircraft, using all available statistics of combat-ready military hardware woldwide. We believe that the numbers of all available weapons for the standing armies of the world altogether would fall far short of the Biblically mandated number: 200 Milion. The shear numbers given in the Bible demand by necessity finding another solution. One must look to the non-physical world, thus the spiritual realm, for the answer. It is there.
3. The wilfull destruction of man against man, though all too universal throughout all human history, is far outweighed by satan's and his followers destructive hatred of humans.
Therefore, the 200 million cavalry unit of Revelation 9 are demonic spirits and not human. They cannot be linked to the physical human kings of the east and/or the kings of the whole inhabited earth of Revelation 16. Whereas, Revelation 9 deals with the 6th Trumpet Judgment, Revelation 16 deals with the 6th Bowl Judgment. They are different Judgments and are not linked.
The kings of the east are physical human beings, who trace their lineage back to Esau, even to Ishmael. Further, the kings of the whole earth are physical human beings. The kings of the east are a part of the kings of the whole inhabited earth. Thus we see the demonic spirits in Revelatin 16 going into the whole inhabited earth in order to entice, seduce the kigns of the earth, drawing them to the battle of the Great Day of GOD Almighty.
Once again, the seduction of man by satan and his emissaries will occur, attempting to turn man against GOD and man against man.
A careful study of the current leaders in the Middle East will yield a plethora of leaders , "kings" and "royalty," all potential candidates for the Biblically prophesied "kings of the east" who will come agains the Holy Land (Israel) and GOD's people (the Jews) in the Last Days (soon to come).
Anyone can clearly see the anger that is fomenting against Israel through the Mid-East and Africa. The picture is becoming clearer that everything is moving toward Biblical fulfillment as Biblical prophecy requires.
In Summary:
* The "kings of the east" of Revelation 16 are human beings.
* The four angels of Revelation 9:15 are demonic spirits.
* The 200 million "horsemen" are 200 million demonic spirits.
* The 200 million "horses" are not physical horses. They are not tanks or military aircraft either. They are 200 million spirits upon which the 200 million demonic spirits ride.
* The Judgments of Revelation 9 and Revelation 16 are different, not to be linked together as one. They are two separate judgments. One (in Revelation 9) is a Trumpet Judgment, whereas the other (Of Revelation 16) is a Bowl Judgment. Do not link them as one.
We pray that this concise analysis has given you a fresh perspective and a clear view of Biblical truth.
Search on the internet for population fo horses. According to:
http:/www/worldalmanacforkids.com/explore/animals/horse/html#fw..ho091800.a.c50
Statistics: The world had an estimated 61 million horses in the mid-1990s, of which nearly 10 percent were in the U.S. Although horsemeat is not generally regarded in the U.S. as fit for human consumption, foreign demand for the product, chiefly in Europe and the Far East, sustained the legal slaughter of more than 100,000 U.S. horses annually in the late 1990s. The worldwide production of horsemeat averaged abuot 500,000 metric tons per year.
Based on these statistics, it is beyond reason to consider a 200,000,000 military-ready grade of cavalry-ready horses. Therefore, since the physical realm denies the existence of 200 million horses, we must look elsewhere. In like manner, the stores of advanced weapons (for example: helicopters, tanks, aircraft, etc.) fall at least one or two orders of magnitude (10 times to 100 times) smaller than the Biblically mandated numbers.
