Does it bother you to see obese people in spandex, or revealing costumes, fishnets, or with breasts pouring out of over-laced corsets? I just finished a six week renaissance faire and quite often heard criticism of overweight people who reveal too much of themselves in outfits that leave little to the imagination, often by folks who have a weight problem themselves. Personally, I don't care. They paid to get into faire and its their fantasy. These folks are often dressed as fairies, or trolls, or warriors, or tarts, or pirates. A few of these folks that were criticized were what I would call plump and not fat. Seems like prejudice.

For myself, i am very self-critical and only wear what I think i can pull off for my shape and age.Although I have lost considerable wieght in the last year and a half, not everything looks good and I won't subject others to it, on the other hand , I don't feel completely "past it" either!
For others , it really depends, some bbw really know how to pull a look off and could wear anything and look great, others could be wearing head to toe haute couture and look like trailer trash, you know? Also though, I do think folks should be comfortable in their own skin and feel free to express theirselves in their attire, especially somewhere such as the ren faire....I personally find size zero models more offensive and consider them to be bad for young girls to see. I realise my views on others may seem conflicting, but this is the best I can artculate it today!

You said it best...."comfortable in their own skin"....
I guess people don't realize that back in "that day" that people
especially women were on the "large" size so to portray that is not a bad thing...

I think there is something about someone being comfortable in their own skin that is great! I have envy. I wish I was as comfortable in my own skin. That being said I do think about venue. It depends on the venue I encounter it in. Renne Faire, anything goes! I am so entertained by the costumery and the self expression that goes on there and a few other places. It is like you get to be this exagerrated you, there. neato!

Considering the occasion... I do not see the big deal if you are pleasantly plump and very expressive with personal taste in clothing. But I do believe that there is a time and place for dress standards. It does bother me when I go into a clothing store and I do see BBW wearing skimpy clothes. You should also dress for respect and success and to me that means dressing apprpriate to the occasion.

Oh, good, thanks! I'm glad I waited for an explanation. Because if the large person is handsome then revealing clothing doesn't bother me at all. Personally, if I get much larger I'd probably not be comfortable wearing skin tight or skin baring clothing. But because of that I have respect for a big person who dresses sexily. I saw someone the other day who was dressed quite fashionably. She had a spandex-like top with low rise skinny jeans. I was surprised she'd dress that way, but she looked really good, actually, and I was impressed that she'd reveal all her rolls and curves by wearing this outfit.

If a big person is not good looking in their face, then the fat does look more repulsive when shown off. Funny how that is.

Yes must agree, appropriate to the occasion is a pet peeve of mine, as I do love to dress up and dislike feeling overdressed becuase noone else could be bothered to make an effort...call me a snob if you wish, but I don't wanna see people in jeans and gymn shoes or shorts and flip flops when I go to an upscale dinner!

There is also the phenomena here known as "mutton dressed as lamb" where (yes sexist, I suppose!) women of a certain age or size think that they are hip and happening just because they squeezed themselves into some cheap frock that is being pushed as stylish, but end up looking like tragic fashion victims instead.....it isn't about fat hatred but more of a case of not knowing how to pull the look off successfully....but some women, no matter the age or size could look wonderful in it, hard to explain...

I am a fan of the Rubenesque figure, myself. As I have often said, "Real women have curves." If I am hugging someone, I don't want to be scratching my own ribs, thank you very much. That said, I also recognize there is such a thing as clinically obese. I don't know about anyone else on here, but I have no interest in being the caretaker of a stroke victim. So, there is a happy medium somewhere, but for me, it has a lot of latitude. As to clothing, or the lack thereof, I believe there is a great deal to be said for leaving things to the imagination. I have been to nude clubs and beaches, biut I find clothing to be more erotic than pure nudity. And I greatly agree about approapriate attire. I once went to dinner on a Saturday night at The Greenbriar Hotel, in West Virginia (where the US Presidents , among other notables, stay) and was appalled to find that I was almost overdressed, wearing a suit. Most of the men did not even wear jackets, and several were in jeans and tee shirts. Many of the women were dressed in evening attire, and I thought the men should have been, too.
