Have you ever been attacked by a wild animal?
My friend's husband was swimming in the ocean on Saturday and was stung by a sting ray.
His description of the experience is nightmarish --- totally scary and the thing kept coming at him. Freaky!
I was sprayed by a skunk twice as a kid when riding my horse, but that's it.
What about you?

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 9:36 PMI saw a grizzly sow and two cubs about 20 yards from me while I was fishing in Alaska last summer. The salmon run results in an abundance of food and since I was not between Mama and her cubs they werent aggressive in any way.
My father gave me his .12 gauge mauser to take with me. There had been some pretty bad attacks that summer on the Kenai Peninsula, the area I was fishing in . The second to last thing on earth I wanted to do was kill a bear but the absolute last thing I wanted wa to be eaten by a bear. So I rested it up on the bank while I waded out and tried to catch a fish. There were probably at least eight or nine other guys out fishing . We were all spead out. At least at firstwe were, but after those bears walked by everyone kind of came over next to me. Where I had the Shotgun. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 7:41 AMThis crow outside squacks at me. I thought, am I by the things nest? But no, it flies from tree to tree and gets other crows in on some squacking. So I lazily throw seashells or pine cones to make it fly off.
Its difficult enought that my place is situated in such a way that ins and outs seem to mean too much, so the crows are just the next obstacle. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 8:18 AMha ha. A crow sort of landed on my head once before landing on the ground. I had long curly blonde hair back then and thought maybe it wanted me to build its nest.
I almost ran into a big orange jelly fish last night in the bay.
I've been within about 25 yards or so of bears up around Yosemite.
But the funniest closest call was when I was least expecting it. I was backpacking with my li'l bro around Big Basin and I figured it wasn't bear country, so there was no reason to string our food up. We kept some stuff in our tent. In the middle of the night, my brother was crawling around and punching the side of the tent and I heard snorting and couldn't figure out what he was doing and thought that HE had been snorting. I was completely oblivious about the wild boars! It just managed to make a hole in my tent. I never got to see it.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 8:16 AMI had all sorts of wild animal pets growing up including four different monkeys and a gibbon ape. The only thing that ever attacked me seriously was a big male ocelot I got as a "washout" from a traveling circus. He was well behaved for most the time and could be walked around on a leash, but as I learned there was good reason for the circus to get rid of him. He was shall we say "moody" in his old age. He had been declawed and defanged but still when he pounced on me from behind once it was one of the bigger shocks of my life. He weighed about 45 pounds and hit me like a sack of bricks and managed to lacerate the back of my head with his remaining front teeth.
Afterwards, I had a great appreciation for what it must be like to be attacked by say a 400 lb jaguar of which an ocelot is a minature version. You would basically be out of it the instant the beast hit you. It would be like being run over by a car. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 11:36 PMMy son got mauled by a wolf I took in from a family that had to move to Guam after 9;11 I had handled sled dogs and unusual breeds of dogs before but this was a challenge. Luna was a 100 pound timber wolf cross/ mexican wolf. She was with us for 18 months before she went to gut him. We went away to a wedding leaving Alaska to New York for two weeks and left her in good hands, any way the point is he did not bring her an offering and their are rituals to get back in the pack i learned later. Luna had to be put down but before that she had given us 5 wolf pup girls 2 got homes and 3 i trained very well. They are the good ambassadors of wolves. Though I will never forget they are ferral brained. Been around wolves for nine years and have many stories to tell !

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 8:18 AMA couple years ago... I watched a deer get hit on the highway...as I pulled up to it it was lying there making this awful noise. To put it out of its misery I straddled its body and with knife in hand I was prepared to....well...you get the picture....
To my surprise...this thing stood up with me on its back...it fell down but tried to get back up again...I looked like I was riding a bucking bronco...finally was able to do the "deed"...
Both its front legs were broke from the car impact and never would have survived that way....we ate good for 2 months.... -

Wed, June 10, 2009 - 4:21 PMMy hamster bit me too. I knock him to the ground and he let out the cutest little squeak.
I was also chased by a dog whilst riding my bike.
Once a beaver or something approached me when I was camping on the Delta.
I was squatting behind some brush doing gods work, and it scared the crap out of me.
Another time, a bird flew right at my windshield.
He pulled up in the nick of time though.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 10:22 PMI've been dive bombed by some kind of bird a couple of times. They make nests then dive bomb any people that come within range.
That's about it.
I've been near wild bears on numerous occasions. Yosemite and elsewhere. They've never attacked, though.
I once had all my food stolen by foxes, skunks and raccoons while backpacking. We had our food in the campground's metal box with a latch that was meant to keep the critters out of the camper's food but the skunk was clever enough to open it. I gently shooed the skunks away while my friends huddled on top of the picnic table thinking I didn't latch it properly. Latched it really securely and as soon as I stepped away the animals were back, the skunk managed to get in again. We let them eat the food, basically, we were worried if we kept the skunk from it we could be sprayed and that seemed worse than going hungry.
We should have salvaged what was left after the skunks were full, though. The foxes and raccoons waited till the skunks were done (probably for fear of being sprayed, too) and then finished everything off. They even ate someone's cigarettes, the toothpaste and the freeze dried coffee. They must have been buzzed!
The next morning we has one jar of almond butter they were not able to get in. That was all the food 4 people got the next day. We had to hike out and end our trip. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 11:43 PMIn Alaska I had to put a moose out of its misery, was hit by a car and the driver of the truck left the scene because he had no insurance, before cell phones now you have to call the state Troopers. any way Yes they make an awful sound ! It was so sad she was a big 800 pound moose. also it looked like a bear had attacked her earlier cause her back side was bloody with claw marks, probably trying to defend her calf, oh yeah that was such a sad event in my life. But I did get a little moose steak and donated the rest to the soup kitchen. Road Kill on the menue up here in Alaska ... your 49th state.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 11:15 AMIv'e been chased by angry dogs while our riding my bikes but that was the only "nasty encounters with animals" ive ever had.
My one single encounter with a wild animal was actually very poignant!
I was at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence RI( I hate Zoo's!) on a 95 degree hot summer day in 1985 and they had a beautiful grey timber wolf alone in a fenced pen,his water bowl was overturned next to a water faucet and there was NO shade and this poor animal looked like he was dying of thirst!
Relying on my 40+ years of experience with Dogs(wolves are from the same family,"Canis Lupus") I scaled the enclosure fence, got on my knee's...and crawled to the water spigot, the wolf was just eyeing me,from his corner. I filled his water bowl and then held the bowl out in front of me talking softly to this wolf...he approached me,circled me...and then reached out and lapped the water in the bowl as I held it for him,I took a chance and reached out and gently petted his beautiful head while looking firectly into his beautiful blue eyes! I put the filled water bowl down, told him "I will be back for you my freind" and crawled back over to the fence,by this time two screaming Zookeepers arrived with the Providence Police and they arrested me,as they led me away in cuffs I yelled back to my wolf "I'll be back for YOU". The Judge was pretty lenient in Court, she totally understood why I did what I did! and two weeks later I was back at that horrible ZOO only this time, with the owner of a Wolf Rescue Compound from Maine and four members of the Humane Society. There was MY freind! still in that wretched CAGE with no water! The Wolf Rescue guy took my wolf back with him to Maine and the Zoo lost it's permit to house a wolf on it's premises. as my wolf was being crated for transport,I hugged him and said "this is for the best, you will be free now" he looked into my eyes and then licked MY HAND...and I never saw him again except in photographs of him in his new 2,000 acre free roaming Wolf rescue facility. He died of natural causes 7 years later and the Wolf Rescue sent me his obituary.
If anyone here thinks "Grey Wolves are Vicious" just ask ME! -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 6:20 PMAw, that's a beautiful story. I almost don't even want to tell mine now, it's so silly.
I went out in my backyard and saw a couple racoons. I stamped my foot and "shhsh'd" at them, but they didn't go away. Suddenly there were 8 of them in a semicircle around me, hissing and looking very much like a gang meaning no good. I turned the hose on them and they backed off a little, and I went back inside. My cat waws going crazy with them invading his "territory". I learned that not all wild creatures are afraid of people.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 6:23 PMWhen I was a kid, I messed around with garter snakes and other essentially harmless species. I have been bitten several times by them. Once, while walking on the Appalachian trail, I stepped over a copperhead snake that I hadn't seen. He struck my boot. Half an inch higher, and he would have hit my leg. His fangs did not penetrae the leather boot, but it dented deeply enough to give me a bruise on my ankle. I was very lucky that day..
The summer I spent on the range in Montana, I had to shoot a coyote who was acting very strangely and was not afraid of me. But, suspecting rabies, I sure didn't mess with the carcass.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 11:19 PMI live across the street from a farm stand. So I'm use to peeking out my front door
or window and seeing their big ass turkeys blocking traffic and their other animals
running amok in the yard. I was running late one morning for work not really paying
attention to my enviorment I went out to my car and got a lovely surprise blocking
the driver's side door. A damn sheep! I'm thinking what the fuck not today of all days.
I tried making loud noises to make it move away nothing. So I started to make the
bah bah sound they make and that fucker tried to rush me lol. I ran to the passenger's
side and got in the car. Climbed over to the driver's side and started the car the noise
from the engine scared him/her and it went galloping back across the street.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 11:54 PMThank you Thank you Cause I rescue Wolves here in Alaska ... you did great . sometimes it can be so unlucky when people do this. I have been biten by another persons wolf but never my own. Tho one was a bit nippy and misbehaving one day. His name is Raven, I also have Lola Blue and Nemo Aka CD. However my son was also bit by a wolf we rescued after 18 months of owning her.. You usualy have to hand feed and raise them right from birth. I did dfeed them at 3 weeks old when the mother Luna allowed me too. Their is much trust you must gain from a Captive wild animal or feral brained. At the time I met Luna I was going thru Breast Cancer, she was my spirit guide.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 11:08 AMI got bit by a wild mouse when I tried petting it!
Growing up in the boonies, I was actually very lucky to be left alone by the badgers, rattlesnakes, foxes, raccoons and possums that were around.
I had run-ins with a huge stag and a woodchuck at different times; they were about a yard away from me.
We just looked at each other and went our separate ways though. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 11:31 AMOh - Almost forgot these three:
1.) I was hiking in California with a friend around some rocky cliffs when I smelled something really foul - like dead body foul. I said to my friend, "Whatever we do, we can't go there!" and pointed in the direction the smell was coming from. We hiked around for a while, me mostly worried about rattlers, when we heard a growl. I sounded like it was just a few yards away. We kind of started leaving the area calmly when my friend asked, "What that you?" and I said "No, it's probably a cougar - let's get out of here." and we got to the car and away. I got lucky that day!
2.) I was hiking in Colorado up a steep cliff when I reached my hand out and heard a rattle in the bushes. I didn't see anything but drew my hand back pretty fast. Probably just missed getting it bit by a rattle snake.
3.) I was swimming in the muddy Mississippi River in Wisconsin barefoot - never a good idea - lots of old fishing hooks and broken glass by the river banks, as well as snapping turtles. I stopped swimming and stood up on something that did not feel at all like sand. In fact it kind of felt like I was standing on a turtle's back. I pulled my foot away as fast as I could, while feeling a rushing, snapping thing come up toward me from the water. Probably a snapping turtle, aiming for my toe (which they can remove if you're not careful!) -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 1:53 PMOh, I forgot something that happened when I was a kid. I was hiking in Tilden Park with my father, and I fell into a little gulch. Apparently I also fell against a feral cat and her kittens. The mother scratched my legs up awfully. I was terrified, and especially unhappy that my father wouldn't carry me back to the car. He was never very sensitive. Well, now I see why I wanted to forget it. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 8:43 PMI have encountered many rattlesnakes in my wanderings, (both Eastern and Western Diamondbacks) but they always saw me before I saw them, and let me know they were there. It is copperheads and moccasins I am always on the lookout for. They can be very dangerous, because they are silent. There are no moccasins around here, but there are plenty of copperheads. -

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 10:52 PMOnce 23 years ago a vicious dog was coming after me to rip me to shreds like a wild hyena. I just kept running towards it as it was fast approaching me. Then I kicked it in the face like a football scoring the winning Superbowl game. The owner threw a fit. I explained she should have it on a leash and I was working door to door solar panel sales. I told her I was very sorry but if she wanted to take me to court I gave her my company info and explained that I would counter sue to mental damage from being forced into that sitch. Of course she never called. Sad but true. The dog lay dying bleeding from the mouth as I walked away.

Re: ever tangle with a wild animal?
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 6:40 AMWhen I was a kid we had horses and this one named Sarah was an evil bitch. She bucked me into a fence over and over then I flew off and over the fence into the dirt and was really hurt bad. I always hated that horse. She was always mean to everyone. No idea why. I think she was demon possessed or something. We sold her shortly after that to some old dude that thought he could break in any horse. After six months he still couldnt and sold it to a man that let her run wild on mass acerage. That's probably what was best for that horse.
