Do you ever log on to Tribe only to see a page that looks like this and does anyone know what this means?

Horrible Exception: org.apache.turbine.util.security.TurbineSecurityException: Unable to update the security system.

Not really, and not all the time. Many times when I get that message on my default browser, Safari, I'll go to Firefox and it will log me right in, or vice versa.

I've also learnt to -always- click the "remember me" button because I get logged in more often when I do that than when I neglect or forget to.

          Go figure....

I get this screen all the time too... at least these days. Usually if I close out the window and try again it goes through.

Funny but I always get irritated that I have to sign in before tribe lets me know it's messed up by displaying that "horrible exception" screen.

Damn it if tribe ain't workin just let me know when I go to tribe.net, don't make me type my email and password just to let me know it's all wonky!

            My time is precious...oh gawd

            LOL

I wish there was a quick fix for it, but no one has been able to provide a solution, neither the original programmers nor anyone else that's looked into the code (and we've had several people attempt to improve it). For now, all we can do is restart the servers when the java component crashes. It helps if you let us know which server you're on (shown at the bottom of every page, *.tribe.inner) when you get the horrific error after logging in. There are ten servers total but not all of them crash at the same time.

Rather, we are actively focussed on developing the new platform, which could be ready for testing by the end of this year."

It means Tribe is borked and it's not you or your browser. Apache Server is the server software Tribe is using. The Tribe server was probably unable to access something it expected and needed. The authors of Apache Server gave it its name from a description of its early days - "a patchy server". But it is far more seasoned and robust these days. The problem probably comes from people who must volunteer their time to keep Tribe running, it's never been for profit.

I got an "exception" screen last night, and changed from Firefox to IE which seemed to dodge it and let me on. I have also switched browser from IE to Firefox and cured it.

This reminds me. Lately when I bring up Google I am having to enter one of those distorted letter codes to get on because either my computer or my network server is sending out automated requests. I have run malware detectors on my machine which have come up with nothing.

Tribe servers crashing have nothing to do with which browser you are using.

changing browsers just gets you onto a different server.

the same thing can be accomplished by deleting the "TRIBE_NET" cookie,
deleting all Tribe cookies, or closing and reopening the same browser.

I assume that when I delete my cache which I do very often, and which I also do whenever the "exception" screen appears, that Tribe's cookie also vanishes yet that doesn't seem to work. I am running XP though so there is a copy of the cache that is undeletable and which is sent periodically to Microsoft. At least, that's what the geeks tell me. That cache though is on hard drive in a blind folder and not in active memory, so I assume that's not an issue. The correlation between switching browsers and fixing the problem may be coincidental, but if so it's a frequent coincidence. More often than not time seems to heal all.

Have you tried what I suggested above when I can't get on or get bumped off? It (almost--95% of the time) inevitably works immediately.

Yeah, i've tried all that stuff. Switching browsers works about the half the time. i always check the remember me box because I want to be remembered for something.

Switching browsers works about as often as reloading the page in the same browser -- which I just did to get this tribe to come up. The "horrible exception" messages come from the server. It is unlikely your browser has the hidden talent of crashing servers (insert Microsoft jab here).

Exactly! I have a mac, though, and I've noticed it happens more often on Safari than on Firefox, and I can usually login on Firefox if Safari delivery of tribe.net (and ALWAYS only tribe.net) has crashed or frozen....

A Web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content.[1] Hyperlinks present in resources enable users to easily navigate their browsers to related resources.

Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by Web servers in private networks or files in file systems.

The major web browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Opera for Windows and Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Opera for Macintosh systems. Google Chrome, originally released for Windows and in the Fall of 2009 for Macintosh, is touted as an alternative browser the major players listed above.

A server is a computer program that delivers a service to clients. The server and client programs are usually, but not necessarily, running on different computers communicating over a network.

An application server is a software framework dedicated to the efficient execution of procedures (scripts, routines, programs, ...) for supporting the construction of applications. The term was created in the context of web applications. In these, the application server acts as a set of components accessible to the software developer through an API defined by the platform itself. These components are usually performed in the same machine where the web server is running, and their main job is to support the construction of dynamic pages.

This is exactly how superstition is created.

I saw a British TV show a year or two ago about superstition. A group of people who believe they were going to a cast wrap up party are locked in a large room. A sign above the exit tells them that they have 30 minutes to score 100 points. If they do they will win a huge pile of cash they can see waiting on the other side. The room is filled with a large number of miscellaneous objects of all colors. They immediately went to work to figure out what would score the points to get them out of the room.

What was actually going on was there was a fish tank with 2 goldfish in another room. Each time a goldfish crossed the center line an observer added a point to the score. Yet by the end of 30 minutes the group was convinced they had figured out the rules and opened the doors. What was even worse was that had they looked up another sign read that the doors automatically unlocked in 5 minutes and if they just walked out they would have won an even bigger pile of cash.

The show was called Trick or Treat and hosted by Derren Brown, an amazing "mentalist" who does mind reading and predictions and admits it's all a trick because people are oblivious to how they are being led and read.

My bet is there is a cat sleeping on a keyboard at Tribe HQ. But feel free to switch browsers, slaughter a chicken or open a window so the evil spirits can leave your computer.
