Do you consider yourself patriotic?
I'm not asking if you want to argue about politics --- I'm just asking how you respond to the whole patriotism thing and if you feel it or show it or don't or whatever. Like in a stupid but fun way.
Happy Independence Day everybody, regardless!

Re: are you patriotic?
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 8:14 PMI wear my American flag shirt for Memorial Day & Independence Day. Even though I think shit sucks total ass, I still think America is the best place to be in the world. Although I would move to the UK if I found someone there willing to marry me. : )

Re: are you patriotic?
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 8:39 PMNo. Seems like a used up genre. I have the pledge of allegiance memorized though. I hope everyone gets engaged to chaos fighter wives and wizard wives this year. -

Re: are you patriotic?
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 8:56 PMI'm patriotic in the original sense - I would like the ideals held up by our founders to be held up and treasured today: separation of church and state, etc. I feel this country has gone to hell in a handbasket. But there's SO much here! The people are amazing! If only ....
My husband does put the flag on his car for special days - we got a big thumbs up and horn action from a senior veteran for memorial day for that.

Re: are you patriotic?
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 8:57 PMi used to be, i would fly the flag out side my company for 12 years. replacing it twice a year.
then came bush
we all know what he did.
no i cant say i am patriotic any longer -

Re: are you patriotic?
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 9:11 PMPatriotic? I believe I'm matriotic now these last decades after living in Santa Cruz. When i first read "When Women Were the Drummers" it finally sank in how male-dominated at a basic level to our own detriment we are and have been so long. So...f**k yeah! I'm not that anymore but something even grander, IMO! -

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 2:19 AMIn my own way I am, the USA is not perfect, no place is,but moving away has made me much more appreciative of the finer points. Although I've been away over 10 years now and am in the process of getting citizenship here(I will retain my US citizenship too),I still care alot about he US and always vote.Once awhile ago,not long after Sept 11, I was playing spades on msn and 1 of the players asked when I'm "coming home the the US".When I answered perhaps never, they said that I must not be very patriotic.Well another player, a soldier in Korea, jumped in strongly and said being out of the US does not mean somone is not patriotic, that many in the US are less than partriotic, the person rather than location is what counts.

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 9:02 AMnot really. I wear a little red, white and blue on 4th of July, but I don't bother trying to watch fireworks. Here in SF, it is usually foggy. I entertain friends at bbqs telling them tales of my days in the "bicentennial choir," do a little charleston, sing "You're A Grand Old Flag" obsessively and compulsively untilt they kick me out of the party. Just exercising my freedom!

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 10:53 AMI wear my Support the Troops t-shirt quite often. Have a nephew who served 2 tours in Iraq and still serves in the National Guard. My neice's husband is in the Army and is being deployed in September. So i'M very thankful for our freedom here (especially when I see what is happening in Iran and North Korea right now) and I'm very grateful to everyone who has ever fought to preserve that freedom. Thanks to all of you. And remember the troops when you're partying on Saturday.

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 4:09 PM"Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels" Samuel Johnson April 7, 1775
Im not sure heres a list of pro's and cons
PRO"S: I served in the military. I vote. I have a speak on public policy as a pundit for our local radio station which requires me to read a lot about the issues so I am more informed than the average citizen. I care about my fellow country men and striving for a just society with equal opportunity.
CONS: I dont have a flag or yellow ribbon magnet. If I had to choose I might pck the Irish football over the USA in a world cup. I often root for the country that is playing the US in olympic basket ball. I think the belgians make better beer, the Japanese make better cars and the germans make kinkier porn. I think the swedes take better care of their people the brits have better health care and most of europe has a better education system but other than that ...

Re: are you patriotic?
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 5:42 AMAm I "Patriotic"? No,not after witnessing so much governmental control and greed in my Countries Government for the last 50 years. Do I love my Country? HELL YES! America is still better than life lived elsewhere but the "America, the Land Of the FREE and the Home of the Brave" is just a clich'e Slogan at this point.
I went to Pocatello's hometown 4th Parade and it was "nice" becuase I love this little mt town, but did I "Celebrate America's FREEDOM" the rest of the day? Hell NO! I bbq'd steaks and floated around naked in my swimming pool the rest of the day! -

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 10:57 PMI am very patriotic. I feel that I owe everything to the people in uniform that are working hard to keep terrorism out of my country. I love and admire the Constitution and Bill of Rights that our fourfathers gave for us. I'm saddened at the gradual loss of our rights. Conserning the second ammendment; I wish that there was a way to change the image of gun ownership in America. I believe there will come a day in my lifetime that allot of the Bill of Rights will be erased. :^( -

Well said, very well said. I too am saddened by our gradual loss of our rights. Unfortunately, my best friends brother dying in Vietnam for this country, and my father fighting through WWII to defeat fascism and socialism, hasn't now seemed to stop this country from falling into socialism. However, I have friends I work with who are currently in the reserves, I have friends who have served and fought in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I fly an American flag to honor them, and my forefathers in my family who have fought for this country. When I hear the National Anthem, and sing it as I once did before a professional public event, it brings tears of pride and joy to my eyes. In other words, for all it's faults, I love this country, and am VERY patriotic. Those that do think there are better places to live in the world are more than welcome to move there...... -

Patriotic, yes.

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 11:07 PMYes, I consider myself to be very patriotic. I love America. I support our troops. My sister is a Sgt in the army because I got her interested when I was in JROTC in high school. Now that I have said that, let me say this: Being patriotic does not make me naieve or stupid. I know that our government has done some awful things in the name of democracy. I believe that there are some serious flaws in our two party political system. But I love this country. I love it's people even though more than a few of them hate me. So yes, on Independance Day, I fly my flag high and I am proud to look like a complete idiot in my T-shirt with the flag print. -

Re: are you patriotic?
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 11:44 PMWelcome to this tribe Homey. Ignore the people that hate you or just tell them to fuck off. They dont matter. Patriotism is awesome. So COULD globalism be! I wear my globalist garb daily. It is mostly all black. I wear my flag shirts proudly at least twice a year. I have a leather flag vest now too that I got at a bargain price. I wish I still had the flag jacket I had in the early 90's. I gave it to someone because they loved it so much. I was like "Fuckin' here yo! Take it. It's yours." I'm SUCH a fuckin' fool. lol -

Re: are you patriotic?
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 12:16 AMHahahah. Yeah I have done stupid shit like that myself.
Hey right after 9/11, if they would have let me out of prison, I would have gone straight to Afganistan to fight. Eneb though I am in Tx, I felt like they had dropped a bomb in my back yard. Of course, after I had taken about a week to calm down a bit, I decided to wait and see if thw Afghans actually had anything to do with it. Hell then The Shrub sent our boys and girls to Iraq and that kinda knocked all the fight out of me. -
