Vocal chords are not connected to pain nerves, so why do we make a noise when something hurts?
eg Hammering, and you hit your thumb: "OW!"
Even if nobody is about - so it's not for sympathy.

i don't make any noise when I get tattooed, but if I hit my thumb with a hammer I swear at myself for being so stupid as to hit myself on the thumb with a hammer.

And not just when something hurts. What about if you have an orgasm alone. What about when you eat? Do you make pleasure noises of enjoyment? Whay do people talk to themselves?
And not just noises when you hurt yourself but words. If I stub my toe why would I yell out something like "OW! GOD DAMN MOTHER FUCK SHIT!!!!!?" Then I give the coffee table an angry look like I'm pissed and scream at the inanimate object something like "YOU STUPID ASSED FUCKING COFFEE TABLE!!!!!! YOU BETTER QUIT STALKING AND ATTACKING ME!!!!!" When in reality it is just my own fault for being clumsy. That damned coffee table can't understand me. I've seen people break the inanimate objects they have hurt themselves on. You might say "Well why not get a coffee table with round edges?" My coffee table doesnt have corners. It's oval. It still attacks me for some reason. I swear it's possessed. I guess it would help if a light was on though. The table is always most vicious in the dark. I think it's afraid of the light.

I would wager it's some type of signal to alert others.
People aren't the only ones that make noises. For example, have you ever accidentally stepped on a dogs paw or tail, it'll let out a yelp. I'm pretty sure that's to let you know that you need to get off it's paw or tail.
So, hitting you thumb with a hammer and letting out a scream or whatever is a warning to the hammer to get away from your thumb. :-) -

It could also signal others that may or may not care about you that you might need help.
If you don''t yell out then noone would come over and say "HOLY FUCK BATMAN!!!! Youre bleeding all over the place. Do you want me to drive you to the hospital? Or should we just drink the blood and make out? Are you a vampire?"

Same reason we laugh at something funny, cry when sad, yell when mad just natural human reaction. Although when I do something thats not like chronic pain grunts and groans for instance stubbing my toes which I often do I tend to clam up until the intense pain passes holding my breath and turning red..........then it goes into a high pitched uuuummmmmmmmmmmm eeeeeeeeeeewwwww ahhhhhhhhhhh......progressing to intense profuse cursing and finally calm assessment of wound.
Pinch a bay see if it screams.
