online gentrification

Simple Logic... look at the largest tribes on here, they are not mainstream groups; they obviously express an affinity for alternative tastes. They are the demographic from which original art and ideas come. Why would they want this latest layout design that screams "I am a sheep, waiting to have the machine do my thinking for me!" ?
The actions recently of this company indicate to me that no concern is being given to the large clientelle that has found this site (up to now) to call "home". The majority of the users here likely chose this site because it invited (at the time) their uniqueness, and provided a place to not be a part of the mediocrity that is otherwise smothering them in the daily bombardment by corporate marketing. If the current infection isn't healed, these people will find a new home. It is the way things work.
The story being played out here is nothing more than gentrification on the internet... an "e" version of downtown Asheville (just one of many cool places ruined in the same fashion).
For those not familiar, here's the plot... pick a place, any place, and notice it has an opening for original thought and an outlet for expression by creative individuals. Thusly, these individuals move in, creating groups, families, soulful businesses, and a rich culture. Growth occurs, and the place becomes fun, novel and inspiring. This attracts outsiders to come "get a taste", or worse, to try to own a bit of the action. This second influx is a group, not with original ideas or even having talent, but just wanting to be "hip" or to capture part of the energy that has made the said place now a hot item. These people are little more than social vampires. The property owners (town real estate moguls, website owners, etc.) now recognize the increased value of their property. They did not create this jewel, they just owned the place where it was formed. Caring more about their wallets than about the people that enriched their world, these owners choose to sell out to mainstream corporate entities, effectually chasing of the real wealth - the artists and thinkers.
That brings us to the current crux... and one of two things will happen from here. Either the property owners recognize the erronious thinking that will cause them to lose the "real" wealth and makes amends, or the beautiful people move along to find a new place to attempt once more to create their utopia.
The jewel makers might be inconvenienced for a bit, but because of their nature, they will never cease beautifying where they reside.
We do our own thinking, so we don't need to buy the ideas of imbeciles. And we will not tolerate censorship!
So, what's it gonna be, Tribe?

When you do am image search for "cock" with safe search *OFF* on Google, you get lots of pictures of guys and girls and big fat dicks in their faces or stuffed up their asses. You do the same search with the same word with the strict search *ON*, you don't get one lurid picture (unless you count Paris Hilton).

So... what's wrong with Tribe? Why can't they be bothered to add one more manditory field in your profile where you insert your age and provide a method in which you have to verify it? Google does it. AOL does it. I was a web designer for 10 years and know that you can put a form field on a page to plug into a database to make sure that this information gets linked with your profile. I know it can be done. So why haven't they done it here?

I'm tired of having to be other grown people's mommy and daddy because they can't be a good mommy and daddy to the kids they had. Guess what? When you have them... you have to make sure you take care of them.

And, if Tribe got off their lazy collective asses, they could simply mandate an age check in everyone's profile and place a preference to whether a person desires to see adult material or not. A simple check box. Hit save. And you no longer have to look at the Chix With Dix Tribe, the Gay Fist Tribe, or Furries On The Lam(b) Tribe* because your gentle sensibilities might be upset and force you into a life of taking some sedative to calm your nerves from such horrible things as image viewing, thoughts on such subjects, or other silly activities.

*I know that only one of those is real. No. Really. Honest.

The government of my country have just done three nasty things with their mandate in the senate:
1. New IR laws that take away basic rights of employment hard won over the last 100 years and drag us kicking and screaming back to the 19th century where the employer holds all the cards.
2. Legislated that student unions are to become voluntary
3. Introduced draconian sedition laws that cramp every individual's right to dissent. First in the firing line are Muslims, second are unions and third is anyone who thinks that what the government has done to date, is doing now and may do in the future is wrong. 7 years jail is the potential punishment for having a dissenting opinion.
I hate living in a police state!
