Hello fellow Absurdists, Anarchists and just plain ol' Nada-Dada-ists,

This is a quick update and open call for those who may still be interested in renting a room at the El Cortez Hotel for this upcoming Nada Motel (Dada Motel) event, June 26-29.

The majority of rooms have been filled and artists have paid and secured their spot for the art show of the summer. There are only five, I repeat 5!!! rooms left for some crazy lunatic artists or Nada-Dada creatures to fill.

So, if it's your turn this year to show Reno what you're made of... and you want to do it in an old, ultra-nada-classy, bug infested, bad ass historical hotel that's also going to be the home of a major "COCK FIGHT CLUB" in the Trocadero Room...

GO GET A ROOM TODAY and JOIN THE PARTY!

El Cortez Hotel
239 W. 2nd St.

, Tova Ramos, will be humbly hosting your bitchin' Nada Motel hangout, THE COCKFIGHT CLUB, at the Trocadero Lounge and Cockpit inside the El Cortez Hotel.

- I am actively seeking anyone interested in performing anything in the cockpit/stage (no charge to perform)
- I am actively seeking visual artists to interpret the Cockfight theme for display in the club (no charge to show, but please honor the theme)
- I am actively seeking anyone who wants to fight in the cockpit. Please provide a consensual partner.
- I am actively seeking quest decorators and slave labor to assist in the construction of the Cockfight Club.
- I am actively seeking donations of materials or capital to help the Cockfight Club kick ass. Please note that the room rental is $600, which I am paying out of pocket in order to show you sons-of-bitches a good time. Your donations would be greatly appreciated.

Please pester me with your ideas, questions and comments. More details will be released when I feel like it.

First there was Dada Motel, an art event people are still talking about. Then there was "Selections from Dada Motel" at UNLV, that got pretty good press from what I have read. Now there is "Dada Motel" the film by Project Moonshine about to premiere at the Reno Film Festival.

Tell me again why the name is changing?

this from Michael Albright, Project Moonshine director:

Hello,

Just sending a friendly reminder to let everyone know that our Dada Motel doc will be playing at the Reno Film Festival on Sunday May 4th at 11:30 AM. Prior to the screening there will be a live, Dada performance by Brad Bynum and some other awesome musicians from around town. Basically, a noise improv of sorts...similar to their performance at the Trocadero Room last summer. So they'll play and do their thing...and then our film will screen.

Looking for Burners to rent to in downtown Reno-

or at least Burner friendly people!

I have two apartment buildings I am cleaning up in the middle of downtown Reno (across the street from the Siena parking lot). Eventually I want to get solar energy, a green roof, murals painted, a coffee shop started, and a community garden in the courtyard, but the first step was to kick out all the meth heads which, after much effort, I did and now it's on to getting good (i.e. interesting/cool, etc, can pay rent, won't burn down my place making a meth lab, eclectic, etc) renters in there.

There are two buildings on the property (one from 1902 and the other from 1925) and have a lot of potential and I would love this to be a cornerstone on cleaning up this part of downtown and getting a scene started there. The rent is: studio $650 (utilities included) and one bedroom $750 so if you know of anyone who may be interested please pass this along.

On another note, I'm really looking forward to seeing many of you at the club for the Shiva Vista Project!

Thanks a lot for your time and consideration!

I am in reno for work and i want to plug in to
the local alternative community. Ideally, i
would set myself up with invitations to local
potlucks or circles, bodywork or coaching
trades, or just opportunities to meet someone
whom i can sit and have some tea with and get to
know a bit.

Would you consider helping me out? I would love
any suggestions, introductions, offers for
trades, invitations to tea or a hike, or
opportunities to be in service.

Thanks for considering it. Please use my email

a definite hit! hundreds wandering the halls of the el cortez. art available to many with only a few footsteps between each amazing installation. you guys are real troupers. sitting there day after day...as heat rose...and the damn ancient elevator gave up the ghost. but it was such a wonderful event, an opportunity to meet many different people, form new friendships, hopefully a few sales.
and 4th street....how did you fair?
p.s. i feel so bad about the actual tenants that were then forced to walk the flights of steps just to gain access to their rooms. they must have been very confused and not happy. but management seemed to be going with the flow...though...they'll probably hear tenant gripes for the next couple months...at least until the elevator gets fixed.
good job peoples...and good art!
and if something was screwed up...just say it was 'dada'.

This Friday, June 29, at the El Cortez, join Holland for their Dada
Motel contribution--a killer show with San Francisco's Sonny Smith and
Reno's My Flag is on Fire. Sonny Smith is the stuff legends are made
of. A storytelling, song-writing, comic book drawing, guitar
strumming, folk singing, sensation--Sonny Smith is a rare treat, and
you should not miss your chance to see him. Fresh from recording in
San Jose, My Flag is on Fire will open, and will, as always, be
ridiculously good. Show starts at 10pm, $5 suggested donation.

I got home yesterday afternoon to find that one of my freshly painted televisions had been disappeared. Gone. So, I'm now one TV short. If anyone comes across one, get in touch with me.

And if you're ever at someone's house and they have a TV that was obviously spray-painted white, politely tell them that the wrath of the Vikings will descend upon them like the hammer of Thor. Then give me their address. My barbarian horde will take care of it from there.

Sounds like an old school expression of magic like abracadabra or shizamm which is why it came out of me. Does anyone have a lead on how I might manifest one of those arrow-signs that people use on intersections to get your attention. I think this would be a great way to turn myself lose on Reno on the Dada weekend as my very own bipedal installation piece dedicated to intersection politicking. I'm still working on the message I want to share and that's the fun part.......manifestinf is fun to. If you've got a lead send it my way.

Some history of the historic El Cortez..

El Cortez Hotel

Built in 1931, El Cortez Hotel is one of only three remaining major Art Deco buildings in Reno, and is an excellent example of this style. The foliated motif found on the terra cotta design on the building's base and parapet are remarkable Art Deco details. At the time it was built, it was Reno's tallest building. The hotel experienced such extensive use early on that an addition was built just a few years after its construction. The hotel included the Orchid Room, a swanky bar and a popular restaurant called the Tracedero Room. These rooms were elegantly appointed with stylish Art Deco ornamentation. The El Cortez was a high-class hotel, garnering an astounding $6 per night, compared to the prevailing room rate of $2.50 per night. The El Cortez was built in anticipation of increased divorce traffic after Reno's divorce law was liberalized in 1931. The residency period for those seeking a divorce in Reno was reduced from three months to six weeks, to boost the already lucrative divorce trade. El Cortez was one of several temporary residential complexes constructed during this time.

Reno-based architect, George Ferris and his son, Lehman A. "Monk" Ferris, designed this hotel for real estate investor Abe Zetooney. George Ferris's career in Nevada lasted over 30 years. He was educated at Swarthmore College and settled in Reno in 1906, where he opened his own architectural office. He was responsible for the Spanish Quartet of schools, including Mount Rose and McKinley Park, as well as the Governor's Mansion in Carson City, and later in his career he served as the State Architect for the Federal Housing Authority. Ferris formed a partnership with his son Lehman in 1928, which lasted until 1932. Lehman had studied at the University of Nevada and worked with Frederick DeLongchamps before going to work for his father. He was one of the first architects in Nevada to specialize in steel frame construction, served as the City of Reno building inspector, was instrumental in the adoption of a Uniform Building Code, and chairman of the first State Architectural Registration Board in 1947.

The El Cortez Hotel is located at 239 West Second St. in Reno. The lobby and casino are open to the public; for reservations call 775-322-9161.

and as a bonus...
(the following hotel was owned by the same family until the disaster happened there last year)

Pincolini (Mizpah) Hotel

The large, three-story brick Pincolini Hotel was constructed in three stages in 1922, 1925 and 1930, and is today the most intact building surviving from the development of Reno's "Little Italy." The hotel was an important component in this Italian commercial district, which included other ethnic groups, such as Basques, Chinese, Japanese and African Americans. The Pincolini Brothers--Joseph, Evaristo, Adelvaldo and Dante--came to Reno from Parma, Italy, around the turn of the 20th century. They financed the construction of the hotel with the profits from their agricultural interests in the area, which at one time included Rancho San Rafael, now a park in the county park system.

The Ward Brothers general contracting firm designed and built the original five-bay portion of the hotel in 1922. Two subsequent additions rapidly doubled the size of the hotel. The design is characteristic of the functional, residential hotels once common in Reno before the development of casinos, most of which have been replaced by newer development. These buildings combined first floor commercial space with upper story hotels. The interior of the hotel retains it original plan and many decorative elements including the lobby's desk and pine paneling, grained to simulate oak. Several of the hotel's 110 rooms contain the original furnishings; iron beds, pine dressers and night stands. An advertisement for the hotel in 1928 described the building as "the most comfortable hotel in the state" and detailed the services offered including "cold, pure spring water in every room. Steam heat, hot water, private baths and apartments." The Pincolini family continues to operate hotels in Reno today, and remains a social, political and economic force in Reno's Italian community.

DaDa Manifesto from Tzara, 1918

A useful resource for everyone involved in DaDa Motel:

dada manifesto
by tristan tzara
23rd march 1918

The magic of a word - DADA - which for journalists has opened the door to an unforeseen world, has for us not the slightest importance.

To launch a manifesto you have to want: A.B. & C., and fulminate against 1, 2, & 3,

work yourself up and sharpen you wings to conquer and circulate lower and upper case As, Bs & Cs, sign, shout, swear, organise prose into a form that is absolutely and irrefutably obvious, prove its ne plus ultra and maintain that novelty resembles life in the same way as the latest apparition of a harlot proves the essence of God. His existence had already been proved by the accordion, the landscape and soft words. * To impose one's A.B.C. is only natural - and therefore regrettable. Everyone does it in the form of a crystalbluff-madonna, or a monetary system, or pharmaceutical preparations, a naked leg being the invitation to an ardent and sterile Spring. The love of novelty is a pleasant sort of cross, it's evidence of a naive don't-give-a-damn attitude, a passing, positive, sign without rhyme or reason. But this need is out of date, too. By giving art the impetus of supreme simplicity - novelty - we are being human and true in relation to innocent pleasures; impulsive and vibrant n order to crucify boredom. At the lighted crossroads, alert, attentive, lying in wait for years, in the forest. * I am writing a manifesto and there's nothing I want, and yet I'm saying certain things, and in principle I am against manifestos, as I am against principles (quantifying measures of the moral value of every phrase - too easy; approximation was invested by the impressionists). *

I'm writing this manifesto to show that you can perform contrary actions at the same time, in one single, fresh breath; I am against action; as for continual contradiction, and affirmation too, I am neither for nor against them, and I won't explain myself because I hate common sense.

DADA - this is a word that throws up ideas so that they can be shot down; every bourgeois is a little playwright, who invents different subjects and who, instead of situating suitable characters on the level of his own intelligence, like chrysalises on chairs, tries to find causes or objects (according to whichever psychoanalytic method he practices) to give weight to his plot, a talking and self-defining story. *

Every spectator is a plotter, if he tries to explain a word (to know!) From his padded refuge of serpentine complications, he allows his instincts to be manipulated. Whence the sorrows of conjugal life.

To be plain: The amusement of redbellies in the mills of empty skulls.

DADA DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING

If we consider it futile, and if we don't waste our time over a word that doesn't mean anything... The first thought that comes to these minds is of a bacteriological order: at least to discover its etymological, historical or psychological meaning. We read in the papers that the negroes of the Kroo race call the tail of a sacred cow: DADA. A cube, and a mother, in a certain region of Italy, are called: DADA. The word for a hobby horse, a children's nurse, a double affirmative in Russian and Romanian, is also: DADA. Some learned journalists see it as an art for babies, other Jesuscallingthelittlechildrenuntohim saints see it as a return to an unemotional and noisy primitivism - noise and monotonous. A sensitivity cannot be built on the basis of a word; every sort of construction converges into a boring sort of perfection, a stagnant idea of a golden swamp, a relative human product. A work of art shouldn't be beauty per se, because it is dead; neither gay nor sad, neither light nor dark; it is to rejoice or maltreat individualities to serve them up the cakes of sainted haloes or the sweat of a meandering chase through the atmosphere. A work of art is never beautiful, by decree, objectively, for everyone. Criticism is, therefore, useless; it only exists subjectively, for every individual, and without the slightest general characteristic. Do people imagine they have found the psychic basis common to all humanity? The attempt of Jesus, and the Bible, conceal, under their ample, benevolent wings: shit, animals and days. How can anyone hope to order the chaos that constitutes that infinite, formless variation: man? The principle: "Love thy neighbour" is hypocrisy. "Know thyself" is utopian, but more acceptable because it includes malice. No pity. After the carnage we are left with the hope of a purified humanity. I always speak about myself because I don't want to convince, and I have no right to drag others in my wake, I'm not compelling anyone to follow me, because everyone makes his art in his own way, if he knows anything about the joy that rises like an arrow up to the astral strata, or that which descends into the mines stewn with the flowers of corpses and fertile spasms. Stalactites: look everywhere for them, in creches magnified by pain, eyes as white as angels' hares. Thus DADA was born* , out of a need for independence, out of mistrust for the community. People who join us keep their freedom. We don't accept any theories. We've had enough of the cubist and futurist academies: laboratories of formal ideas. Do we make art in order to earn money and keep the dear bourgeoisie happy? Rhymes have the smack of money, and inflexion slides along the line of the stomach in profile. Every group of artists has ended up at this bank, straddling various comets. Leaving the door open to the possibility of wallowing in comfort and food.

Here we are dropping our anchor in fertile ground.

Here we really know what we are talking about, because we have experienced the trembling and the awakening. Drunk with energy, we are revenants thrusting the trident into heedless flesh. We are streams of curses in the tropical abundance of vertiginous

vegetation, resin and rain is our sweat, we bleed and burn with thirst, our blood is strength.

Cubism was born out of a simple manner of looking at objects: Cezanne painted a cup twenty centimetres lower than his eyes, the cubists look at it from above, others complicate it appearance by cutting a vertical section through it and soberly placing it to one side (I'm not forgetting the creators, nor the seminal reasons of unformed matter that they rendered definitive). * The futurist sees the same cup in movement, a succession of objects side by side, mischievously embellished by a few guide-lines. This doesn't stop the canvas being either a good or a bad painting destined to form an investment for intellectual capital. The new painter creates a world whose elements are also its means, a sober, definitive, irrefutable work. The new artist protests: he no longer paints (symbolic and illusionistic reproduction) but creates directly in stone, wood, iron, tin, rocks, or locomotive structures capable of being spun in all directions by the limpid wind of the momentary sensation. * Every pictorial or plastic work is unnecessary , even if it is a monster which terrifies servile minds, and not a sickly-sweet object to adorn the refectories of animals in human garb, those illustrations of the sad fable of humanity. - A painting is the art of making two lines, which have been geometrically observed to be parallel, meet on a canvas, before our eyes, in the reality of a world that has been transposed according to new conditions and possibilities. This world is neither specified nor defined in the work, it belongs, in its innumerable variations, to the spectator. For its creator it has neither case nor theory. Order = disorder; ego = non-ego; affirmation - negation: the supreme radiations of an absolute art. Absolute in the purity of its cosmic and regulated chaos, eternal in that globule that is a second which has no duration, no breath, no light and no control. * I appreciate an old work for its novelty. It is only contrast that links us to the past. * Writers who like to moralise and discuss or ameliorate psychological bases have, apart from a secret wish to win, a ridiculous knowledge of life, which they may have classified, parcelled out, canalised; they are determined to see its categories dance when they beat time. Their readers laugh derisively, but carry on: what's the use?

There is one kind of literature which never reaches the voracious masses. The work of creative writers, written out of the author's real necessity, and for his own benefit. The awareness of a supreme egoism, wherein laws become significant. * Every page should explode, either because of its profound gravity, or its vortex, vertigo, newness, eternity, or because of its staggering absurdity, the enthusiasm of its principles, or its typography. On the one hand there is a world tottering in its flight, linked to the resounding tinkle of the infernal gamut; on the other hand, there are: the new men. Uncouth, galloping, riding astride on hiccups. And there is a mutilated world and literary medicasters in desperate need of amelioration.

I assure you: there is no beginning, and we are not afraid; we aren't sentimental. We are like a raging wind that rips up the clothes of clouds and prayers, we are preparing the great spectacle of disaster, conflagration and decomposition. Preparing to put an end to mourning, and to replace tears by sirens spreading from one continent to another. Clarions of intense joy, bereft of that poisonous sadness. * DADA is the mark of abstraction; publicity and business are also poetic elements.

I destroy the drawers of the brain, and those of social organisation: to sow demoralisation everywhere, and throw heaven's hand into hell, hell's eyes into heaven, to reinstate the fertile wheel of a universal circus in the Powers of reality, and the fantasy of every individual.

A philosophical questions: from which angle to start looking at life, god, ideas, or anything else. Everything we look at is false. I don't think the relative result is any more important than the choice of patisserie or cherries for dessert. The way people have of looking hurriedly at things from the opposite point of view, so as to impose their opinions indirectly, is called dialectic, in other words, heads I wind and tails you lose, dressed up to look scholarly.

If I shout:

Ideal, Ideal, Ideal

Knowledge, Knowledge, Knowledge

Boomboom, Boomboom, Boomboom

I have recorded fairly accurately Progress, Law, Morals, and all the other magnificent qualities that various very intelligent people have discussed in so many books in order, finally, to say that even so everyone has danced according to his own personal boomboom, and that he's right about his boomboom: the satisfaction of unhealthy curiosity; private bell-ringing for inexplicable needs; bath; pecuniary difficulties; a stomach with repercussions on to life; the authority of the mystical baton formulated as the grand finale of a phantom orchestra with mute bows, lubricated by philtres with a basis of animal ammonia. With the blue monocle of an angel they have dug out its interior for twenty sous worth of unanimous gratitude. * If all of them are right, and if all pills are only Pink, let's try for once not to be right. * People think they can explain rationally, by means of thought, what they write. But it's very relative. Thought is a fine thing for philosophy, but it's relative. Psychoanalysis is a dangerous disease, it deadens man's anti-real inclinations and systematises the bourgeoisie. There is no ultimate Truth. Dialectics is an amusing machine that leads us (in banal fashion) to the opinions which we would have held in any case. Do people really think that, by the meticulous subtlety of logic, they have demonstrated the truth and established the accuracy of their opinions? Even if logic were confined by the senses it would still be an organic disease. To this element, philosophers like to add: The power of observation. But this magnificent quality of the mind is precisely the proof of its impotence. People observe, they look at things from one or several points of view, they choose them from amongst the millions that exist. Experience too is the result of chance and of individual abilities. * Science revolts me when it becomes a speculative system and loses its utilitarian character - which is so useless - but is at least individual. I hate slimy objectivity, and harmony, the science that considers that everything is always in order. Carry on, children, humanity ... Science says that we are nature's servants: everything is in order, make both love and war. Carry on, children, humanity, nice kind bourgeois and virgin journalists... * I am against systems; the most acceptable system is that of have none on no principle. * To complete oneself, to perfect oneself in one's own pettiness to the point of filling the little vase of oneself with oneself, even the courage to fight for and against thought, all this can suddenly infernally propel us into the mystery of daily bread and the lilies of the economic field.

DADAIST SPONTANEITY

What I call the I-don't-give-a-damn attitude of life is when everyone minds his own business, at the same time as he knows how to respect other individualities, and even how to stand up for himself, the two-step becoming a national anthem, a junk shop, the wireless (the wire-less telephone) transmitting Bach fugues, illuminated advertisements for placards for brothels, the organ broadcasting carnations for God, all this at the same time, and in real terms, replacing photography and unilateral catechism.

Active simplicity.

The incapacity to distinguish between degrees of light: licking the twilight and floating in the huge mouth filled with honey and excrement. Measured against the scale of Eternity, every action is vain - (if we allow thought to have an adventure whose result would be infinitely grotesque - an important factor in the awareness of human incapacity). But if life is a bad joke, with neither goal nor initial accouchement, and because we believe we ought, like clean chrysanthemums, to make the best of a bad bargain, we have declared that the only basis of understanding is: art. It hasn't the importance that we, old hands at the spiritual, have been lavishing on it for centuries. Art does nobody any harm, and those who are capable of taking an interest in it will not only receive caresses, but also a marvellous chance to people the country of their conversation. Art is a private thing, the artist makes it for himself; a comprehensible work is the product of a journalist, and because at this moment I enjoy mixing this monster in oil paints: a paper tube imitating the metal that you press and automatically squeeze out hatred, cowardice and villainy. The artist, or the poet, rejoices in the venom of this mass condensed into one shopwalker of this trade, he is glad to be insulted, it proves his immutability. The author or the artist praised by the papers observes that his work has been understood: a miserable lining to a collaborating with the heat of an animal incubating the baser instincts. Flabby, insipid flesh multiplying itself with the aid of typographical microbes.

We have done violence to the snivelling tendencies in our natures. Every infiltration of this sort is macerated diarrhoea. To encourage this sort of art is to digest it. What we need are strong straightforward, precise works which will be forever misunderstood. Logic is a complication. Logic is always false. It draws the superficial threads of concepts and words towards illusory conclusions and centres. Its chains kill, an enormous myriapod that asphyxiates independence. If it were married to logic, art would be living in incest, engulfing, swallowing its own tail, which still belongs to its body, fornicating in itself, and temperament would become a nightmare tarred and feathered with protestantism, a monument, a mass of heavy, greyish intestines.

But suppleness, enthusiasm and even the joy of injustice, that little truth that we practise as innocents and that makes us beautiful: we are cunning, and our fingers are malleable and glide like the

branches of that insidious and almost liquid plant; this injustice is the indication of our soul, say the cynics. This is also a point of view; but all flowers aren't saints, luckily, and what is divine in us is the awakening of anti-human action. What we are talking about here is a paper flower for the buttonhole of gentlemen who frequent the ball of masked life, the kitchen of grace, our white, lithe or fleshy girl cousins. They make a profit out of what we have selected. The contradiction and unity of opposing poles at the same time may be true. IF we are absolutely determined to utter this platitude, the appendix of alibidinous, evil-smelling morality. Morals have an atrophying effect, like every other pestilential product of the intelligence. Being governed by morals and logic has made it impossible for us to be anything other than impassive towards policemen - the cause of slavery - putrid rats with whom the bourgeois are fed up to the teeth, and who have infected the only corridors of clear and clean glass that remained open to artists.

Every man must shout: there is great destructive, negative work to be done. To sweep, to clean. The cleanliness of the individual materialises after we've gone through folly, the aggressive, complete folly of a world left in the hands of bandits who have demolished and destroyed the centuries. With neither aim nor plan, without organisation: uncontrollable folly, decomposition. Those who are strong in word or in strength will survive, because they are quick to defend themselves; the agility of their limbs and feelings flames on their faceted flanks.

Morals have given rise to charity and pity, two dumplings that have grown like elephants, planets, which people call good. There is nothing good about them. Goodness is lucid, clear and resolute, and ruthless towards compromise and politics. Morality infuses chocolate into every man's veins. This task is not ordained by a supernatural force, but by a trust of ideas-merchants and academic monopolists. Sentimentality: seeing a group of bored and quarrelling men, they invented the calendar and wisdom as a remedy. By sticking labels on to things, the battle of the philosophers we let loose (money-grubbing, mean and meticulous weights and measures) and one understood once again that pity is a feeling, like diarrhoea in relation to disgust, that undermines health, the filthy carrion job of jeopardising the sun. I proclaim the opposition of all the cosmic faculties to that blennorrhoea of a putrid sun that issues from the factories of philosophical thought, the fight to the death, with all the resources of

DADAIST DISGUST

Every product of disgust that is capable of becoming a negation of the family is dada; DADA; acquaintance with all the means hitherto rejected by the sexual prudishness of easy compromise and good manners: DADA; abolition of logic, dance of those who are incapable of creation: DADA; every hierarchy and social equation established for values by our valets: DADA; every object, all objects, feelings and obscurities, every apparition and the precise shock of parallel lines, are means for the battle of: DADA; the abolition of memory: DADA; the abolition of archaeology: DADA the abolition of prophets: DADA; the abolition of the future: DADA; the absolute and indiscutable belief in every god that is an immediate product of spontaneity: DADA; the elegant and unprejudiced leap from on harmony to another sphere; the trajectory of a word, a cry, thrown into the air like an acoustic disc; to respect all individualities in their folly of the moment, whether serious, fearful, timid, ardent, vigorous, decided or enthusiastic; to strip one's church of every useless and unwieldy accessory; to spew out like a luminous cascade any offensive or loving thought, or to cherish it - with the lively satisfaction that it's all precisely the same thing - with the same intensity in the bush, which is free of insects for the blue-blooded, and gilded with the bodies of archangels, with one's soul. Liberty: DADA DADA DADA; - the roar of contorted pains, the interweaving of contraries and all contradictions, freaks and irrelevancies: LIFE.

JUNE 2ND IS COMING!!! THE END IS NEAR!!

We all remember that the final day to get your Dada Motel happening listed on the Dada Motel Map (DaMM) is June 2nd, right?
<Right>
Good, so is there anyone here who doesn't think they will make that deadline?
<Hands spring into the air>
Ok, you there, in the back...Why won't you be able to make the deadline?
<I have a project and all, but I don't have a location yet>
Ok, you're not alone. What I recommend is emailing Chad - you can use either his personal email or his tribe email - and give him a 1-2 sentance blurb saying Who you are and What you are doing. We'll be able to leave the place and time as TBA, but then you'll have to make sure that you get some flyers out on the street and especially at the locations where the map is being distributed. Can you do this?
<I guess, but it's kind of, y'know, unprofessional>
Well this is Dada Motel, man. Get a grip on the ambiguity or get out of the way. If you want to look professional, then I suggest you invest some effort into your flyers/postcards. Go talk to Registered Ink on 4th St. They'll cut you a deal on postcards. Anyone else who is having trouble getting onto the map?
<One sheepish hand raises>
Yes...
<Well, I really want to do it, but my partners are kind of being flakes, and I'm just not sure if it's going to happen>
Hmm, well that's a tough one, but again, you're not alone. I would do the same thing I mentioned before: Get something into Chad so that you can at least be on the DaMM. Hopefully being published will motivate your partners to commit to participating. If you guys just can't get it together, then hold a Dada funeral for dead art projects, or something.

Are there any other questions?

DaDa Film Event

There will be a film event at the Jazz Club. That much is certain. I'll be talking to Alex more about it this weekend, and of course working on the particulars over the next few weeks.

What I'm shooting for: A tower of thrift store televisions 8 or 9 feet high, playing a series of shorts in the Jazz Club parking lot. The size and complexity of this project may vary, but that's the overall concept. If I can, I'll leave televisions on random street corners playing the same thing. I'll mix in some random clips from suitable films like "Even Dwarfs Started Small" as well. There are many other things that may happen in that vicinity as well, some of them having to do with Vikings and Catholic rituals.

What to call the event? Fourth Street Film Festival is too pompous and too tacky at the same time. Unless I hear something better, I'll publicize it under the headline "THIS IS NOT A FILM FESTIVAL!"

Absurd? ABSURD? THIS...IS...DADA!

IMPORTANTE!!!!!!!! Get your room's event listed in SierraArtsMagazine (SAM) on the DAMM (DadaMotelMap)

Here's the word from Allison at Sierra Arts Magazine
(a monthly publication of art events in Reno area)
as of Apr. 2nd.

We have a DadaMotelMap (DAMM) being updated continually. The FINAL VERSION will be out June 1st but the deadline to get your event listed IN THE SIERRA ARTS MAGAZINE is May 1st.

•••••••••May 1st is the deadline to have your ROOM listed in the magazine••••••••

Now this is the only way you'll be able to be listed in their publication. Anyone that doesn't get info to Allison at Sierra Arts by May 1st will still be able to get their listing on the FINAL version of the DadaMotel Map (DAMM) which will be liberally distributed around town in the form of a flyer, in art galleries, coffee shops, bars, etc. I am personally updating the DAMM and YOU all will be distributing (pretty please).

Deadline for the final version of the DAMM is June 1st and it will be made known in the magazine that their printed version of the map is NOT quite the final version. (So far–as of right now–we have over 20 separate locations to include!)

Once you, as a participating artist, have your room lined up in a downtown Motel or Hotel send a brief explanation of your show to Allison. This is your own personal press release for your art show/installation, whatever you wanna call it and it WILL be listed in their publication separately on a page with all the other shows. Photos are not needed, she won't have room for all those in the issue.

By the way, if you're a musician or performer, such as one performing at the Trocodero Lounge, you can send info about your own show if ya want or be lumped in with the other acts.

Describe Your Work.

You'll wanna keep your description short and sweet, 2 sentences. She's got a lot to edit so make us all look good–like professionals, keep it easy for Allison, she's the editor and she's got plenty o' work to do. 2 sentence description of what a visitor can expect to see in your room. AND INCLUDE YOUR DATES AND HOURS! For the Dada Motel event, we've announced the dates of Thur. June 28th, Fri. the 29th and Sat. the 30th. As far as hours, each motel may vary according to what the management agrees to with you individually. And you may wanna go a couple extra days, that's fine with us. SO LIST IT! and you can NAME YOUR SHOW, or just use your name, whatever. YOUR Phone number would be good if ya' want, NOT the motel's though.

Email (or snail mail to Sierra Arts c/o Allison) your press release to:

editor@sierra-arts.org

and while you're at it, go ahead and email me (Chad Sorg) with your info for the FINAL DAMM flyer:
thesorg@sbcglobal.net

I'll be collecting information to include up until JUNE 1ST at MIDNIGHT–no exceptions. And these will not be free for us to make so send a check if you can. Get ahold of me.
–––––––––––––––––
QUESTIONS for Allison go to this email address:

Allison@sierra-arts.org
(She tells me that your questions to her need to go to the Allison email because she doesn't read the Editor emails throughout the month; but just a few days before the issue is ready to be 'built'.

that's all and thanx for playing.

dadada

and by the way....

If you do send a check, it'll be used for the Dada Motel promotions. I, along with others have invested our own time and money already to make this thing happen and it's adding up. (I'm having Tshirts made this week for DadaMotel and I've printed stickers, not to mention those maps.)

And while we're on the subject of money, DadaMotel needs sponsors to buy ads in SAM (Sierra Arts Magazine) and Reno News & Review and RGJ too. Hell–any magazines really, but the idea is to make this event look like a real attraction for everyone that lives in Reno (and beyond). There are bars, restaurants, hotels and other businesses wanting to participate. They want to promote their events right? Let's twist their arms to lay out some cash, I know SAM can use the support.

thanks for that idea Ann!

-yours in dadahood,

dada-folk:

while i hope to have a room with mr. saverio cine and several other notorious members of the much-feared and just-now-emerging rdac (or: "rdac-el," as it's known in the middle east), my primary mission at dada is to capture it (and you).

hence, if you would like to be captured, and potentially give yourself and your exhibit the potential for dubious fame, contact me and let me know who you are and where you'll be and i'll begin to plan accordingly. we may also have a studio set up in our room; but we'll be figuring those details out soon.

if sav and i get particularly ambitious, we may be putting things on hd video as well as still.

i don't like to communicate over the dada-tribe-eline. if you want to reach me, i'm at stevenkjames@yahoo.com.
Parade 101

Closing down 4th for the parade is VERY pricey. We could do it... but there would need to be someone/org with dozens of $1000's in cash for bus rerouting and cops etc. In a couple of years when Cal.Neva is swayed by the big public involvement and large crowds... its a go.

For now Block Party permits and closure of 4th only along each block with open intersections is easily do-able.

So the answer is... the Red Light Green Light Parade

How it works:
1- We need at least 1 (ideally 2+) businesses on each block to fill out
http://dev.cityofreno.com/res/com_service/spec_events/blockparty.php

2- All the paraders stage at one end of 4th. (For example-There's the parking lot at St. Vincents on Valley/4th, they are cool with it happening on Sunday when its closed... Saturday would take a little more grease but is do-able.)

3- As the street light turns green... as many groups as can make it SAFELY across the intersection go thru it and are home free for the east-west section of the block to walk/parade as slowly as they want... UNTIL they get to the next intersection when they wait for the light to turn green and go to the next one, and on and on.

Ideally at least 5-6 blocks in a row are involved to that it's worth all the trouble... if we can make it from Valley to Keystone... the parking lot at the shopping center would be a good end place, but a painful spot to try and turn and go back. A one way parade??

Suggestions for places to end that would be good turn arounds?

The challenge... finding a business/resident on each block who wants to be responsible. Find me the peeps and I'll fill out the paper work.

Dada motel has reached a verdict
All of us just want to revel and immerse our selves in our own individual projects.
We hope you can do the same but we are quite excited about doing art.
We are here and there and we are available to collaborate with but our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday April 26th.
Dada motel is just an umbrella for a plethora of art activities.
Individuals and their groups are responsible for their own ideas and making them work.
And then advertising them.
The whole purpose of Dada Motel is to do our own work, the way we know is best, show it in the way we know is best and not have to listen to our selves bitch when some one else doesn't share our vision
(Or ruins it for us)
If that is a foreign idea to you then we have come along to inspire you just in the nick of time.
You have to motivate yourself
Talk to us, We aren't going anywhere
We have Steve Addi and Alex at the Jazz Club working on a 4th st. Film Festival,
THey need video to show
We have a place for metal sculptures
I'm hoping we have the Lincoln Highway Association
We have a Dada mayor condemning art sprawl
Contact Faith Zaumeyer with your ideas for the Trocadero room

Come out from under your little Rocks get a motel room and Do what you do best

I think St. George said all that can be said on Rubber Soul

I've got a word or two
To say about the things that you do
You're telling all those lies
About the good things that we can have
if we close our eyes

Do what you want to do
And go where you're going to
Think for yourself
'cause I won't be there with you

I left you far behind
The ruins of the life that you had in mind
And though you still can't see
I know your mind's made up
You're gonna cause more misery

Do what you want to do
And go where you're going to
Think for yourself
'cause I won't be there with you

Although your mind's opaque
Try thinking more if just for your own sake
The future still looks good
And you've got time to rectify
All the things that you should

Do what you want to do
And go where you're going to
Think for yourself
'cause I won't be there with you

art politicos

I had this thought the other day. It's about Art and Politics.

There is a political undertone to this DadaMotel show. As some of you've seen there's talk of Anarchy. This, of course, is not the kind of 'anarchy' that happens chaotically after a revolution and the reining government is dis-empowered only to be replaced by a string of subsequent governments. We're talking about a more tribal brand of Anarchy, one that continues to operate through coordinated efforts. I'm not going to copy some of the things found elsewhere on this trbe right now already stated about the term, because I'm kinda tired and want to go to bed when I'm done typing, so I'm hurrying here. Go look around the tribe if you're curious.

By the way, please send responses in, hate mail, questions, answers or whatever words of wit you can muster up.

Anyway, it dawned on me that us artists have 4 models of government at work all around us in the form of galleries; well not really galleries ALL AROUND us here in Reno at the moment, we only have a few, but you know, I wanna talk about art galleries.

So here goes:

PRIVATE, for-profit galleries exemplify Capitalism. That one is easy, you make it, they sell it and CASH is earned. Dollar bill is the bottom line, that is unless the gallery is run by a trust fund baby or is a tax right off. And the tax right off still just brings the dollars.

NON-PROFIT galleries are more like socialism, plugging in to the pool of tax money in order to serve the public. Socialism, in my mind, is where things are paid for from a collective of money that the government collects and redistributes in the form of services for the people. It's art that doesn't sell easily so tax-payers and corporate donors sponsor to have it shown to the people in order to broaden their horizons. Feed the people's minds, and pay for it with their own taxes. (hope everyone likes it!)

Now a CO-OP(perative) gallery is communism. People taking equal ownership (or no ownership) and working together equally [in an ideal situation] for a common goal. But allow me to also point out that all of these entities are actually operating in a capitalist world so none of these examples are purely defined by the political models I'm using, it's just a reference to show how these diverse types of galleries operate.

the DADA MOTEL type of gallery situation is Anarchy. Pooling personal resourses together to work for a goal but not assuming too large of a group. It all hinges on personal agreements–face to face, old fashioned TALKING. Overall we hope it engulfs the whole town and spreads & spreads, but as we've been pointing out continually, we are not an organization. There's no over-arching governing body to tell you what you can & can't do. If you operate in a group, agreements are made of how to conduct things but the group beside yours may not do it the same, and isn't that o.k? We're all still working toward the same thing, which in OUR case is showcasing Reno's creativity that we have right here in our lil' town.

I personally want the world to know that what we have here in Reno is special. I've seen enough to know, I've been around and I know enough artists and creative types here in town to be impressed. And besides, I'm trying to make it as an artist myself and that doesn't mean I have to compete with other artists around me. It means I should work with them–beside them and sometimes even FOR them.

So is this show political?

This mission statement deserves its own thread

a consensis has been reached by the movers and shakers on this important point
I think the best way to end the questioning.....
WHat are we doing for Dada Motel NEXT YEAR???
Is to quote the old Dada master himself, Frank Zappa

''And if a forest grows up
From the dirt on the floor,
That the frog with the satchel had just
Dumped beside the door.
You just startin' to get worried,
You ain't going out no more
And it's confusin' to your mind ----
Just consider this:
You can be scared when it gets too real
You can be scared when it gets too real
But you should be diggin' it
While it's happening. (Yes!)
'cause it just might be,
A one-shot deal ''

If the carcass of Dada Motel survives to raise it's zombie face in July or 2008 we at dada motel have failed in our mission and should be pummeled to death with something beige bland and boring

Is there such a thing? Who has copies and can you scan them & Email if they are not digital.

I'm willing to volunteer once a month or so to make digi copies of notes... is there anyone else out there willing to take it on? We can switch out and post a copy here and on the http://www.DadaMotelReno.com website (which is sorely lacking info!!!).

I love the notion of individual resp AND I think guidance for the curious and uninformed is crutial to making things happen. It seems everywhere I meet people they've 'heard' of it but have no idea what it is or how they can connect with it. Meetings every week is not a realistic connection point for about 80% of the talented artists out there who jive with the project.
Dada Motel
''The absurd holds no terror for me''

The Reno Artist's show for Reno's Artists by people who know what Reno is all about; this is the theme. The show will be the last three days of June, climaxing June 30. We have reserved at least ten rooms at the El Cortez Hotel on 2nd st. for morning and afternoon activities, the Historic Trocadero Room downstairs at the El Cortez for evening performances and a Coalition of venues including Abby's Highway Forty, the Reno Jazz Club, Davidsons Distillery and the Dream Center/Studio Fourth at 4th and Valley for all night celebrations of Reno's unlimited potential for absurdity. Rooms at the El Cortez are $125.00 for the week. More venues will be added as demand increases.

All artists are literally independent, and will sign a disorganization and self-responsibility agreement. You can have personal sponsors and handle your own sales but this is a privately funded project. Artists are encouraged to collaborate and even share venues. A map with venues and times will be published. Deadline is June 1st

We need interested artists to get on board. Dancers, fire spinners, Actors, Visual Artists of any type, light artists, heavy artists, little artists, hypotemporary artists, Artists with something to say and artists with nada, Artists with no commercial potential, Architects, Poets, Sculptors, Con Artists and Musicians for performances that you'll say, "I may never get a chance to play a song that goes like this again"; Opaque melodies that would bug most people. Got a "Reno quia absurdum" idea? Let us know. We are seeking Artists with things we can learn and works that haven't been seen before. It is all about art and all about us.

This show will feature functional, old school anarchy at work. Although in common parlance, anarchy may refer to the breakdown of order following the collapse of a state, the term, as used in this application does not imply nihilism, anomie or the total absence of rules, but rather an anti-authoritarian society that is based on the spontaneous order of free individuals in autonomous communities, operating on principles of mutual aid, voluntary association, and direct action. Anarchists are those who believe that all people are imbued with a sort of commonality, or common sense, that would allow for people to, in the absence of the government, come together in agreement to form a functional existence. Morality falls in line with functionality, and its forms differ. Anarchy does not reject ethics, or principles, but rather imposed morality.

Flyers/Brochures at Wine Walk

I'm going to be peddling my wares inside Downtown Marketplace during this weekend's Wine Walk (3/17/06). I'll have a table set up in the store so it should be high visibility to all the foot traffic. If you have a Dada Motel flyer/brochure/card that you have made I'll put it on the table. I'm going to try and attend this Thurs. Dada Motel meeting. If I don't make it, catch me at Downtown Marketplace on Saturday. The wine walk starts at 2pm. Should be a good weekend as the weather will be nice and it's St. Patrick's Day.

El Cortez

Dada Motel has secured at least 10 rooms at the El Cortez Hotel on 2nd and Arlington for the last week of June.

These rooms are guarenteed, but not yet paid for. Individual artists are still respsonsible for reserving their rooms. Rooms cost $125.00 per week and will be available for reservation 2 weeks before the actual show.

Exhibiting in an El Cortez room will involve firm hours of operation agreeable to the hotel management (read: daytime hours, not too early, not too late). They do not want people wandering the hallways afterhours. Normally, the management does not allow visitors past the lobby, so they are already being very generous. Noise within El Cortez rooms should be kept to a respectful level.

We have been granted the use of the historic Trucadero nightclub for all three evenings. We must provide our own refreshments (start securing donations of food and beverage). As of today 2/10/07, there are no set arrangements for who or how the Trucadero will be used. Please bring your suggestions to the next meetings. Here's my idea: Performers who want to use the nightclub could contribute to the cost of renting/decorating/refreshing the club, thereby "reserving" their place on the program.

The El Cortez is not the only venue, but it definately provides the centralized location that we've been looking for. For wilder, all evening events, the cooperating venues on 4th St. are were to look.

The "Vision" is starting to come together. If you have an idea but are unsure how you may fit into Dada Motel, we are better able to make suggestions than we have been before. But as always, do whatever you want to do - you don't need our permission. Just don't screw it up for the rest of us.
