How do Santo Daime churches deal with more sensitive topics like homosexuality and abortion? Of course there are many other topics that could be discussed as well....

the answer is more cultural than doctrinal in my experience. the brazilians don't think much of homosexuality, and I have a hard time imagining a positive stance on abortion, tho' I've never heard the topic mentioned. however, elsewhere, cultural norms take precedence, i think.

the daime is not big on dogma, so for the most part it's all a matter of personal conscience.

Santo Daime's not big on dogma...I glad to hear that...has anyone else have any other input?

      Thanks, Mark.

i am doing my dissertation on gay lesbian and bisexual people's experiences with ayahuasca, looking at experiences in the churches and outside of church environments. There really isnt much written about it. I want to see how the environment affects the experience for non-heterosexuals, and also any visions or insights about sexual orientation or same sex relationships glb people may have had. but I wont be finished until at least next year. I myself am a lesbian member of santo daime. I found the amazon to be rather homophobic, but rio seemed more hip, and I attended a brazilian church near there that was lead by a gay padrinhho who was well respected. There is at least one lesbian church leader in the United States.

And I went to a White Work with a fabulous gay Daime wedding once. All the non- Daime family came just for the wedding part, it was great...

Abortion isn't legal and available in Brazil (well, technically...). Women still find ways, but this definitely affects their ability to choose.

I meant to add to that...

the tradition offers support and empowerment to each being as part of a collective unit. within that, people are supported to make their own choices in alignment with their highest selves. it's pretty situational. this goes for brazil and everywhere...life :-)
