Does SD have different denominations? I heard something about CEFLURIS being different from the more traditional group... And how do the beliefs of those in the SD faith differ some those over at the UDV?
Thanks, Eric

Re: Daime Denominations? UDV?
Wed, August 13, 2008 - 9:48 AMUpfront, I will say that I know very little about the UDV. The rituals of the groups are different, but the core belief of each is based upon daime as a sacrament. Mestre Irineu (Santo Daime) and Mestre Gabriel (UDV) came to the daime through distinct and separate paths, however.
As to the differences between Cefluris and other groups which have descended from the Mestre Irineu lineage... well, that's a fairly long story. When Mestre was alive, there was at first one group. He was a strong leader, but not given to dictating, so through the strength of his personality it all kept together. However, somewhere along the line his first musician (Daniel Periera) received a vision to start another daime church, and did so with Mestre's blessing. This is the Barquinha. It's available only in Brazil, as far as I know, and only in a few locations. The Barquinha relies heavliy on music, too, but the uniforms and forms of the ritual are different.
When Mestre Irineu passed, there was great turmoil in the Daime community in Rio Branco. Padrinho Sebastiao (Cefluris) left and took a fairly large group with him into the rainforest to nurture his vision (descended from Mestre, but most surely his). The Cefluris community follows the rituals that Mestre left, but as with any situation where a group becomes isolated, some differences crept in. Whether you consider these differences major or minor is still at times the subject of some debate. Cefluris also recognizes a number of additional important people (Pad. Alfredo, etc) which the Alto Santo groups (Mestre's original followers and their descendents) do not.
Cefluris is the branch of the daime that has been spread around the world, so if you come in contact with the daime outside of Rio Branco, it is likely to be a Cefluris church. Some of the original followers (Alto Santo) believe this to be contrary to Mestre's wishes, so in fact the chance to drink outside of Rio Branco is one big bone of contention.
Schism seems to be a feature of the daime (as opposed to a bug). The daime shakes people and organizations. Stuff is bound to break loose. -

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 1:45 PMThanks for your response, and while I still don't really know what the differences, I sure wish I had the chance to find out. Maybe someday Santo Daime will have the freedom of religion it is supposed to have, and people won't have to hide it. -

Re: Daime Denominations? UDV?
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 8:51 AMOne of the best ways to experience the different lineages is to go to Brazil. As the religions grow and expand in other parts of the world, new forms emerge that reflect the culture and consciousness of the locale. Not to say that those forms are any less valuable or authentic, but it's a big cultural experiment. These traditions are alive and evolving as we speak.

Re: Daime Denominations? UDV?
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 1:11 PMAh, if only it were within my grasp. Unfortunately, relocating there is more costly than I can handle...that would be my dream and is one of my greatest desires...but ever since I was a young man, I've had a very bad back and just recently I injured my right hand to the point where I can almost do none of my former skills. This has effected my job opportunities...and for the last 4 years, my will has been week. I know the best methods of growing closer to God and Wisdom, I know they are there and where to find them, but where I live, I next to can't reach them. My spirit and will has been week...I need healing....I need truth, light, and love...and I just don't feel it where I am anymore, and wanting to get to the places where I know I can find it makes me more riled inside. I just feel like up and walking from WA to NM to prove to myself I am not weak, even if I have to bum it.
I did try to come to South America earlier this year...must have been the beginning or ending of March...I only had $3,000 USD, which is money I had been saving for some while... and I knew trying to live somewhere takes money, so I tried to travel as cheaply as possible, hence I went via LAND. I didn't make it half a day in Mexico before I was stopped and robbed of all my money (including being taken to a bank by police to get my travelers checks cashed). Then I came back (walked across the border), got a new job fishing in Alaska, hurt my hand and agitated old back injuries again. So, with out hardly makin' a buck, I was back in my hometown of Wenatchee, WA, USA. And now I'm trying to figure out what I want to do.
I'ld sure love to do what you spoke of Kris, I may get to someday.

Re: Daime Denominations? UDV?
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 1:14 AMboth udv and daime churches are syncretic churches which combine christian beliefs with african and native amazonian indian. Individual spirit beings who are perceived by the person who "receives" a hymn are also part of the the santo daime canon. many of the beliefs of the santo daime church are based on the philosophy of allen kardec, which was the pen name of a french metaphysician who believed in the evolution of souls through charity and wisdom. His book, the book of mediums, is very popular in brazil and among santo daime practitioners. santo daime is sometimes combined with the brazilian religion umbanda to be called "umbandaime." santo daime involves singing and dancing and mediumship which can be dramatic. the udv emphasizes concentration and they do not dance, although they may listen to recorded music during the ceremony. I have not been to UDV, but i have been researching them. they are hierarchical with several levels based on the ability to concentrate and wisdom achieved during sessions with the daime. santo daime calls the drink "daime" while UDV calls it "hoasca." santo daime is very inclusive and hymns can be about shiva, the dakinis, the cherokee indians, the spirit of pele and many other celestial beings. both churches use the tea as a tool to allow access to the primal truths about your own identity. -

Re: Daime Denominations? UDV?
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 1:21 PMThanks for the info, I'm gettin' a little better picture of Santo Daime. It would be nice to meet them, I hope I can some day. I have never stuck to one thing in my life, rather growing and shifting as my understanding and awareness has grown. I've seemed at a standstill for too long, and i know where I need to go...gathering the will to run to it hasn't been a problem in the past, but finances...usually are. I'm contemplating going down to Santa Fe to visit the UDV, but I've been unable to even get in contact with them.
