Dancing the Tides: Contemporary Shamanism in the Santo Daime - - Jan 18, 2007
A film by Débora Bolsanello with commentary by Luis Mendes do Naseimento

From the film,

The purposes of the Bailado are not limited to strengthening community ties.
The dance is defined as a collective effort to manipulate energy. The hinario ceremony creates an energetic container that gives access to a parallel reality. The Bailado serves as a modulator of the revelations of the Santo Daime Beverage. In order to prevent psychological disintegration, the Bailado anchors the participants as they go through different levels of consciousness. A possible crisis brought on by the intensity of the experience is channeled through the dance. Participants focus on their coordination and avoid mental distractions. The kinetic alchemy of the Santo Daime dance consists of concentrating on opposite poles, which explains the separation of men and women. The Bailado forms a pattern that creates a human generator. It's choreography is meant to generate sufficient energy to sustain the healing process in the Astral.

The Queen of the Forest, a Goddesses associated with the moon, inspired Mestre Ireneu to recreate the movement of the Sea in the Bailado. The 12 hour dance is synchronized to correspond to the 12 hour rhythm of the tides which are regulated by the moon. The repetitiveness of the Bailado is an embodiment of the fundamental duality of the cosmos. The Bailado is a manifestation of the transient and the eternal, imitating the nature of the sea which continually changes, yet remains the same.
