I got my first grown-up hoop this past Friday. Since then, I've gotten bruises EVERYWHERE and had a blast playing around with Big Pink*. Thing is, I seem to be lacking somewhat in the coordination department. I've made the mistake of watching many, many YouTube videos of people making hooping and tricks look ridiculously beautiful and easy, and now I'm getting frustrated. Thus, a few questions:
1. Are any of the instructional DVDs worth a damn? Some of them look interesting, but I'm afraid of plunking down 30-40 bucks on what may essentially be fun-to-watch-but-maddeningly-uneducational footage of adorable girls in fuzzy leg warmers who make the shit I almost break my nose trying look like nothing at all. I'd love to be wrong about this, by the way. Those girls are damn cute.
2. Are DVDs even the way to go? Should I find a hooping Yoda to show me the ways of The Force instead?
3. How long did it take you to do cool stuff? Any fun but crazy-simple tricks you can recommend to get my confidence up?
Help enable this newly-addicted hooper! I'll buy you a popsicle!
*Big Pink is my hoop, not a euphemism. Dirty birds. :)

Re: Needs Me Some Edumacation
Thu, June 21, 2007 - 10:57 PMMy advice? Don't fret, stick to it and try to stay positive. It takes time for your body to catch on to all of these new things you are demanding of it. Set goals and pick a couple of really basic tricks to master before moving on. Say for three or four days (to even a couple of weeks depending on how quickly your body warms up to it) you work on hooping every day, work on adjusting the speed of your hoops revolution faster and slower on command and keeping it going for longer and longer periods of time without the hoop falling to the ground. When you've got that under control set a new goal. "By the end of june I want to be able to do a lift" or "This month I want to master traveling with my hoop" or whatever...if you meet the goal sooner great, set another...if it takes a bit longer don't get frustrated let it motivate you to push on. As you begin to build yourself a nice little playlist of moves...your muscles will have memory to pull from as you learn new ones and you will find that you pick up tricks easier. It's hardest at first.
Also just so you are aware, we're having a Play in the park day on 7/7/07. Come check it out, hang with me, and all kinds of other skill toy addicts and practice your moves all day. Heres the tribe with more info. tribes.tribe.net/creativityinmotion
Keep your chin up, hun. You'll get there. It just takes time.
Happy Hooping!

Re: Needs Me Some Edumacation
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 5:29 AMI was actually very excited about the park thing...but it turns out that the 7th is a friend's birthday party, so I won't be able to make it. Boo.
I take my hoop to work with me every day, and I go outside on "smoop" breaks (smoke/hoop). It's led to all kinds of odd looks and "What's that for?" I can travel, I can keep the hoop up like a champ clockwise and widdershins, and by rocking front-to-back, side-to-side and circling. I can lift it with either hand. I just think that there's some magic trick I'm not getting to work it up (or down) my body. No knee action for me, and the shoulder hooping is tricky (I wonder if it isn't the fact that my "girls" are pretty prominent). Also, once I have it up, I'm not sure what to do with it. My hoop is 1" pipe, so I'm thinking the weight of it may be hindering me. I'll be ordering pipe and tape today to make my own (since I cannot for the life of me find anyone in Dallas who carries the pipe). Anyhow, I love it and I have no problem working at it. My goal is to smooth out my moves. Like Ex-Lax, only less gross. Any suggestions would be awesome, and it's fantastic to hear from another local hooper!
