*grins* hi folks!

i'm visiting my family in plano, and would love to make hoops for a bunch of people. i've found that, unlike oregon, the lowe's and home depot stores here don't seem to have tubing in stock. bummer.

is there a location that DOES generally have tubing, or am i stuck pre-ordering it?

also, are there any stores that have pretty tapes? i usually get mine from identi-tape and ebay, but figure it's worth a shot. *grins*

finally, are there any hoop jams going on any time soonish? anyone have a WHD event planned i might be able to crash?

thanks!

Hey tribemates!

I'll be teaching a 4-week beginning hoop class at MoveStudio (www.movestudio.com) on Sat. from 1-2 p.m., July 19th-August 9th. Space is limited, so if you're interested, register soon. This is my first opportunity to teach in the North Dallas area, so I'm excited MoveStudio is interested!

On a side note, I'll be moving this summer from Rowlett to McKinney, so keep an eye out for more North Dallas/Allen/McKinney classes and events!

Thanks all,

Hi all--

I've passed my moderator status over to Gypsy Fyre, an awesome hooper who also runs the Creative Motion tribe.

I'm moving this summer, and with two little girls, I'm finding it difficult to hold local jams. I sincerely apologize for this--it wasn't my intention to be so hands off when I started this tribe. Two months after it's inception, I became pregnant with twins. Blessings to the creative cosmos for those bright babies! They have though limited my hooping somewhat. I'm still teaching classes locally when I can and I will continue to post those. Thank you friends for your unwavering hooping enthusiasm!

Please welcome the most generous Gypsy Fyre as our new moderator! She's a shiny star!

cheers,

I want to get together with some of you guys, to hoop, and spin, but I'm not going to be around on Sunday for the White Rock Lake jams. Is it possible to get something else going? I'm getting in on Friday the 30th of May, and I will be gone to Austin on that Sunday. But Saturday the 31st is open, and after Sunday, on the 2nd til the 8th is open. Let's get something together!

Greetings Dallas Hoopers! I'm in KY, but I travel for work, and have a branch in Dallas (well, I think it is techically around Irving). There aren't many hoopers up here, so I always try to connect with people in the cities I visit. Would there be anyone interested in getting together for an evening of hooping when I come in? My next visit is scheduled for July 28th - August 1st.

Happy Hooping!

Eeyore Loves Hoops!

Howdy Hoopsters,
This Saturday, April 26th, in Pease Park is pretty much THE BIGGEST HOOP DAY OF THE YEAR in Austin. It is Eeyore's Birthday Party, the most fun freak fest when Austin remembers who it is and acts out accordingly! I bet at least a few of you Dallas Hoopers are planning to come and go native.

Please wear a costume! For a good idea on how folks go ALL OUT with their freakdom, check out the photos at http://eeyores.sexton.com/

There is often more than one hoop scene at Eeyore's. Folks associated with this Tribe and the Austin Hoops Yahoo group generally establish our Hooper's Paradise towards the north end of the main activity zone, near where the east (sunny side) trail converges with the west (shady side) trail in a big Y. We can hear the drums of the drum jam that sets up just north of us in the shade on the hill. The main thing is that this area has grass, some shade, and is a bit less crowded than the egg-toss field.

Parking around the park is pretty impossible, so be prepared to walk a bit. I plan to get there with my hoops by around 2pm or so.

Happy Birthday Eeyore!

My friend Eneca and I are playing a night of electronica and video projections at the end of the month.

Hey Dallas Area Hoopers,

There is a thriving hoop community in North Carolina, and a part of that hoop boom is due to the Hoop Pathers. They combine many aspects of hooping with meditation and spirituality (I'm over simplifying it, but more info can be found below).

They are interested in bringing their Hoop Path Workshop to Austin in March of 2008. This would be a 2 day workshop over a weekend, approximately 6 1/2 hours. Being that Dallas is so close, and there are a number of hoopers there, I thought there might be some interest in participating in a Hoop Path workshop.

If you aren't familiar with Hoop Path, see the info below, or check out their tribe:
http://tribes.tribe.net/thehooppath

I will be looking for spaces soon, and getting back to Ann about this as info comes along. If this is something that you would like to participate in, please reply here, or email me: carrin ( a t ) carrin (d o t) org

Thanks,
Carrin
*************** Hoop Path Bio: **************************************

Jonathan Baxter picked up a hoop for the first time six years ago, thinking it would help him rehabilitate some injured shoulder muscles. He never dreamed it would develop into a daily meditation that totally transformed him, inside and out. Over the years he has logged in thousands and thousands of hooping hours--what we on the Hoop Path call "flight time. Baxter's commitment to his Practice has revealed to him many of the profound subtleties to be found this ecstatic movement. This extensive and direct involvement with "hoopgnosis," coupled with Baxter's unique gifts as a storyteller and guide, make him an extraordinary teacher.

His course, The Hoop Path, equally emphasizes both the spiritual and the technical dimensions of hoopdance. Through personal story and myth, Baxter deepens the student's metaphorical and physical understanding of a wide variety of hoop moves and dynamics. His connection to his students is genuine and distinctive--as much as help you become skilled and graceful hooper, Bax wants to help you connect to your inner rhythm, and know yourself from that place.

This Month's Spin Fest and Mystic Mutts and Moonpies Festival News...

Hey Spinners, Drummers and Groovers!!!

This month is hectic so I’m having people come out to the Mystics, Mutts and Moonpies festival at white rock lake in Dallas on October 13th instead of just a jam on our own. Bring your toys and hang out while we groove to music and show love to our four legged friends. So come on out and hang with me and mine at the Creative Motion “camp”, spin to some tunes and help out the furries in need. It’s a pretty cool idea for a festival. She’s organized a “hoop-a-thon “to benefit various animal charities. I’m loving it! If you can go and would like to join me and the group of Spinsters helping me out send me a message or give me a call. I’ve got a new number (as of a couple of weeks ago) so if you need or want the new one just ask. Otherwise look for “Creative Motion” and be sure to say hi. For more information about the festival it self check out the website. www.mysticsmuttsandmoonpies.com

This is NOT a fire event, but please bring your day toys and a sense of adventure and come have a great time with us.

In OTHER Creative Motion Spin Fest news….plan for it the third Saturday of each month. The location will be bouncing around for a while, most likely, until we find a place that we all just fall in love with. Keep your eyes pealed for info in the Dallas Area: Skill toys in the park tribe. As always I hope to see you all there—spinners of all kinds, drummers, groovers, spectators, and everyone else. Everyone is welcome. In the meantime I hope everyone comes out to hang with us this Saturday, October 13th at the Mystics Mutts and Moonpies festival at White Rock Lake in Dallas. I can’t wait! It’s going to be such a fun and inspiring day!

ALSO, For those that wanted to help me with the charity festival but couldn't commit to practices NOTE: If you can commit to being there from 10am to 5pm Saturday the 13th you can help!! I'm treating the day like a spinfest sampler instead of having a group perform...'cause with my crazy schedule and everyone elses crazy schedule PLUS myschevia AND the fact that it's an all day event it just works better this way. SO...if this opens up a window for you PLEASE contact me. I need a few people that can volenteer to hang out help me and jinna out all day.

I love you guys! ...And as always...

Hope, Love and Firelight
~Gypsy

was thinking about (After Burningman is over) reorganizing and turning creativity in motion into a monthly (or so--depending on what everyone is interested in) Jam. The details are up in the air...but it could be a sort of spin/drum jam that moves around to different parks/hosts, etc....with maybe a potluck attached. I learned a lot from the first spinfest and I'm sorting that info in my head...but I really want to put something together that occurs on a regular basis. I would just like some feedback on the idea.

Let's talk it into action...

Needs Me Some Edumacation

I got my first grown-up hoop this past Friday. Since then, I've gotten bruises EVERYWHERE and had a blast playing around with Big Pink*. Thing is, I seem to be lacking somewhat in the coordination department. I've made the mistake of watching many, many YouTube videos of people making hooping and tricks look ridiculously beautiful and easy, and now I'm getting frustrated. Thus, a few questions:

1. Are any of the instructional DVDs worth a damn? Some of them look interesting, but I'm afraid of plunking down 30-40 bucks on what may essentially be fun-to-watch-but-maddeningly-uneducational footage of adorable girls in fuzzy leg warmers who make the shit I almost break my nose trying look like nothing at all. I'd love to be wrong about this, by the way. Those girls are damn cute.

2. Are DVDs even the way to go? Should I find a hooping Yoda to show me the ways of The Force instead?

3. How long did it take you to do cool stuff? Any fun but crazy-simple tricks you can recommend to get my confidence up?

Help enable this newly-addicted hooper! I'll buy you a popsicle!

*Big Pink is my hoop, not a euphemism. Dirty birds. :)

Hello Dallas!

Hooping.org has been restructured, redesigned and relaunched and I invite you all to stop by and check it out. There's more information about what's been going on posted there, and now that I'm doing this solo as well (Vera stepped down in February) I'd also like to invite you all to contribute your writing, photos, thoughts, videos and more. I welcome your talent and input in keeping this almost four-year-old world-wide community hooping project alive.
Peace!

While all the entries were wonderful, I really felt called to award Sharna first place because of the unusual creativity of her moves. Beautiful!!! And Erica was a close contender, not only for the beauty and diversity of all her moves, but because of her fun and thoughtful presentation style. Congratulations everyone!
FIRST PLACE WINNER: Sharna Rose. Awarded a FREE Teacher Training valued at $700

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
www.youtube.com/watch

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
www.youtube.com/watch

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
www.youtube.com/watch

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
www.youtube.com/watch

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
www.youtube.com/watch

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: www.youtube.com/watch

Moves:

Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
www.youtube.com/watch

The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

Hey there hoopers--

I just want to let you know I'm hooping hiatus since I'm pregnant with twins. I will be firing up the hoop group in the summer when I'm healed and can pass off the little ones to my hubby for a few hours!

Until then, let's keep the group alive. Thanks to Hoop Charmer for putting together an AWESOME collection of links and videos for us!

If the weather holds my Dallasites, maybe we can call a jam after Thanksgiving. I'll bring hoops and just do arm hooping. :)

Cheers,

I'm teaching myself tricks by watching videos on youtube.com and hooping.org. What tricks do you know? What tricks are you trying to learn?

I can:
- hoop on hips, neck, waist, hands and thighs
- turn both directions when hooping
- beam me up scottie! (lift hoop above head or back onto the body with one hand)

I'd like to learn:
- the step through with the hoop verticle
-some behind the back hooping
- better shoulder hooping

Welcome to Dallas Hoopers

We're a Dallas-based group dedicated to hooping (hula hooping that is)! Our goal is to meet in local parks for hoop dancing, sharing hoop tricks and spread the joy of hooping.

Hooping is done with larger, heavier hoops than the plastic models you find at toy stores. It's a seriously fun workout that improves coordination, burns calories, and initiates perma-grins.

Don't have a hoop? Don't worry, there are some of us who always bring extra to share.

Who can join? Anyone who likes to hoop or who wants to find a new, fun way to workout. All ages are welcome. You're never too old or too young to enjoy hooping.

There's also a <a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dallashoopers/" target=new>Dallas Hoopers yahoogroup.

Let me introduce myself. I'm Jula - the hooper that started this group. I'm an intermediate hooper who loves to craft and make Jula Hoops.

Introduce yourself and let me know what park is closest to you. I'm thinking of rotating Hoop Jams throughout the area and targeting the last Saturday of each month to meet from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m or longer.
