But for those of you who we know but are not in the troupe, we are in fact working on a new dance for Terpsicore 2008, and hope you are too! http://terpsichore.cynnabar.org/

I want to give you folks the chance to sign up first before I open it up to less local people. Its an all dancing event but I don't see why we can't have music classes too. Last year Crystal even taught a yoga/warm up class. Lets say classes start at 10 AM and end at 4 PM.

Also just as last year we will be having a performance hafla before open dancing. So let me know if you are planning on dancing. You can sign up as late at the day off. 5 minutes or less please! :)

I sent out an email about this last night, but thought I would post it here as well. This exhibition looks so cool, and will be in Chicago from February until May!

The link in the email below doesn't work, but try this one: http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/artmuseum/. You can then click on the 'Cosmophilia' header for more info.

The McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College presents Cosmophilia:
Islamic Art from the David Collection, Copenhagen. The exhibition-on
view from September 1 through December 31, 2006-comprises 123 of the
finest examples of Islamic art, most of which have never before been
displayed in the United States.

Cosmophilia (literally "love of ornament") explores the roles that
decoration plays in the visual arts of Islam. The lavish use of ornament
is one of the most characteristic- and attractive-features of Islamic
art, and one that never has been given its due in a major exhibition. In
addition, the exhibition is a "user-friendly" and accessible
presentation of Islamic art, because it is organized visually by theme
as opposed to historically or by medium.

The exhibition is curated by Boston College Professors Sheila Blair and Jonathan Bloom, who jointly hold the Norma Jean Calderwood University Chair in Islamic and Asian Art at Boston College as well as the Hamad bin Khalifa Chair of Islamic Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. The works on display-drawn from the C. L. David Collection, a leading repository of the arts of the Islamic world-range in media from jewelry to carpets, in date from the 7th to the 19th century and in geographic origin from Western Europe to East
Asia. The exhibition includes both secular and religious art.

The exhibition website is at http://www.bc. edu/bc_org/ avp/cas/artmuseum/exhibitions/archive/ cosmophilia/ index.html

It will travel to the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago from February 1 to May 20, 2007.

A fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Blair and Bloom on Islamic ornament, Kjeld von Folsach, Director of the David Collection on the history of the collection; Prof. Nancy Netzer on parallels between western medieval and Islamic ornament, and Prof. Claude Cernuschi on the reception of ornament in 19th-century Vienna is available at the McMullen Museum and will be distributed by the University of Chicago Press.

Of course I had a fabulous time and did many non-dance related things of which I will discuss somewhere else..... but there is a fabulous dance atmosphere out there. So many people walking around in "good" ME garb, including lots of Turkish. And I swear to God, I saw a womam with a Turkish coat made from what appeared to be red silk with the turkish moon motif in gold embossing. The moons were as big as oranges! (I saw here from a distance and never got to ask where she found the fabric, you can all beat me later.)

It was interesting that way more people wore ME garb than danced or played music. I know lots of those people were from the Outlands where ME has been the thing for garb for years because they really do live in the dessert. Its an important point that a ME persona is so much more than dancing. Although most of the dancers were still wearing tribal or indianish stuff, I would have liked to see more Turkish or Arab style dancers!

There was a really low key ME dance expo. Lots of beginning dancers. Of note was the woman who performed a traditional Northern Indian dance, complete with awsome garb and lots of ankle bells, then she changed clothes and came on again to do a fabulous Persian dance. She had such good arm placement. There were a couple of other dancers worth noting, Layla from Kansas City who was beautiful to watch and did so much to organize everything, and girl I can't remember her name, who could be Rachel Brice's sister! Such fluidity of motion. There was also a larger woman who was very friendly and a good dancer and the only one who seemed to get the concept of dancing "with" another dancer. She and I had some fun. :)

Drumming was pretty good, (but I missed Zahira!) and there was a good bazooki player and a guy playing some kind of ME bag pipes. OOooh that was really good.

There were a couple of parties with dancing, but mostly everyone hung out next to the coffee tent, which was good for keeping up that late night energy.

I don't think they have as strong of ME community out there as we do here. People didn't seem to know eachother that well, so it was kinda hard to get to know people and no one seemed to be in welcome the new people mode. So in that respect I was a little home sick. We really do have a great community around here! Thanks so much to everyone that has been a part of that in the last couple of years. I am so blessed. And please....... any one that can swing it, consider comming to Lilies with me next year!
